How Is SWG?

I play and love EQ2 and was wondering how SWG is. A few of my guildies play it and while i love the elf, dwarf fantasy stories that dominate the mmo market  i sometimes long for something a bit different and am a sci fi fan so....

Station pass would be an option for you.  As far as SWG do the trial first and decide.  Choose your server wisely since a ton of people will be transferring servers soon due to dead servers.

I will see where folks in my EQ2 guild play and give it a try then.  Thanks for the reply.

i would suggest bloodfin for a server,  most the people from my old server moved there to find pvp and then the pve players moved there to be with their pvp friends.  the server i was on is now ghost planets with decaying player cities that stand as a memorial to what the game once was.

This is excellent advice. Download the trial from tryswg.com and play through the newbie station and the first set of quests in Tatooine so that you can see what the real game is like. The beginning is not representative of the game as a whole. Do *not* give SOE any more money until you do this.

    You'll thank us later. :)

Which is why we always try and get people to do the trial before giving SOE money.

LOL.  I am not surprised!    There are much better MMORPs out there than SWG, even some FTPs.

    Wow.

You guys are ridiculous. If you think SWG is about questing, then this is not the game you're looking for.

It's about the immersion, and sandbox element. Which SWG does a better job than WoW. Not to mention there's more content in this game now, than there has ever been. I'm a frequent player of SWGEmu and I prefer the NGE. The combat system isn't that bad, and there's lots to do. Heroic Instances like IG-88, Nightsister Queen, Star Destroyer, Hoth, etc.

People bash this game so much, yet they don't know anything about it. I've started a new character in SWG as a fresh start, and I've been a level 32 for more than a month. I've been busy raising a city for my guild, gathering up resources to craft new weapons that are as good as loot weapons, and armor sets with the new powerups.

This game is a lot of fun.

ive gone to the dark side ... if you read my post history i blasted soe for the NGE but you know what after playing it with an open mind ... its not half bad sure its not the old game many use to know and love but its still pretty darn good.

SWG is not a sandbox so don't hype it as one, that isn't ethical.

Combat in SWG is arguably the worst of any game on the market.

How is it not a sandbox?

You live in a seamless world - able to do almost anything you really want. Whether it's raising beasts, bounty hunting, camping while you're scouting for resources, crafting the new weapon from a new instance, participating in player events designed purely by the players.

There's these things called Live Event Tokens, and you're able to place Tie-Fighters, Stormtroopers, Banners, Structures, Jawa Sandcrawlers, etc. Many things in order to create a fun scenerio/event for the server. Almost as if it was designed by the developers themselves.

If you think SWG's combat system is bad, then you've never played FFXI, CoH, WAR, or Vanguard. IMO. PVP is pretty skill based, the only problem is the huge amounts of buffs people use. But really it doesn't come down to who has the most buffs, it's who knows their profession the best and know how to manipulate certain circumstances when they arise.

Always nice to see the SOE viral marketing team in action...

lol, loose the tin foil hat.

I'm just a SWG player, who's recently returned since the NGE was released. I'm a launch subscriber.

    Yes, actually.

I deleted my Pre-Publish 9 Jedi out of pure rage when the NGE was released.

I've moved on, and I'm enjoying my time playing the new SWG. It's fun.

Incorrrect.  SWG is not seamless anymore.  It has instancing and level-restricted zones.

I have played CoH/CoV, Vanguard, and WAR.  ALL of those offer much better combat than SWG does.  I have not played FFXI, so I cannot comment.

i have to agree with Thunderous, I actually really enjoy the War game system then i enjoyed NGE SWG. I too was a day 1 vet, Ran the largest Imperial Guild and was Mayor of one of the Largest Player Cities pre NGE. Most my guild and I left when NGE hit, it was not the game we bought after that. Some of my friends and guildmates stayed though and about a year later talked me into coming back to try the game. I did and played for about 2 months. As a Weaponsmith I found the game restrictive compared to what it once was, I found the combat system hard to control on it's twitch system, now auto lock did help with this, the penalties for it was to high to allow players with disabilities play. I will admit though their are players out there that love the PvP in the game.

It is just hard to trust a company that lies to it's customers to purposely mislead them to buy an expansion that was not what they expected or wanted.

    To the OP:

SWG was good, now it isn't.

SWG was populated, now it isn't.

300k or so played at the height, now, less than 10k.

Save you time and don't bother, or at worst, use a free trial and save yourself the money, if not the waste of time.

SWG has had it's time, but that is long over.

SWG is a great game. What they did with the game might of been wrong but theres nothing wrong with it atm imo. the servers that are populated have just the right amount, not overflowing with people so it becomes unplayable. A decent amount of content to do with Space, Collections, places to explore.

People only say SWG is pathetic because they compare it to what it once was but to me, compared with other MMO's out there it is truely one of the best.

Combat i find is great, and the pvp is good. You have to be skilled at your proffesion if you wana do any good. Even a FOTM can totally suck.

Population is about fine, Not to many people and not to few. (Only about 5-6 servers with a decent population)

Do try it before you Buy just like ANY mmo out there. And it wasn't SOE that ruined SWG, LucasArts pushed the NGE.

I have to be honest...your entire statement reaks of less than mediocrity and is hardly an endorsement of SWG.

My Cousin tried to brew his own beer once.  When asked my view the best responce I could give was "It's not that bad".  So when someone says's the current combat mechanics in SWG "aren't that bad" it makes me laugh since I know how terrible it really is.

If you like a tactile game with solid immersion and a plethora of dynamics come check out Dungeons & Dragons Online.  The game play in DDO is vastly superior to the current version of SWG and if you haven't played in the last year you'll bound to enjoy it a hell of a lot more then you could possibly enjoy SWG.  Create a post on the DDO section of these forums and ask some questions...

I've played those other games and think CoH, WAR and Vanguard had a superior combat system to the terrible combat system currently in SWG. The main issues with SWG is that the entire player base uses mods since the default controls make the game unplayable and even though this is widely known through the community SOE refuses to do anything about it.

I agree about the "Live Event Tokens" being a supreme environment for machinma fanactics that like Star Wars.  The problem is you'll have to deal with everything else that sucks about the game.  I love rpg enivronments and have spent millions of credits with the tokens recording SWG in FRAPs yet I've not been able to maintain this interest for more then 2 weeks at a time 'cs the game is otherwise terrible; I can make them available if interested.

Op, I would ignore the negative posts they are to a man from former players who cannot move on and still cry about the nge that happened years ago. No, it is not the same game it once was, some parts are different but many are now better. it's moved on, grown and developed since the nge was first released, it's just a pity the cry babies cannot do the same, They might actually enjoy the game if they were to return and play the game with an open mind. You have to ask yourself why they still hang around looking to shoot down anything positive said by others after all this time; words like lonely, pathetic and sad spring to mind.

Try the free trial, if your friends are spread over several servers I would try Bria as that currently has one of the largest populations and is still very busy with an active community, there are many other servers with healthy populations too, but there are one or two to avoid.  Bear in mind that on the 19th or there about a number of servers will have free character transfers, and populations will be moving about a lot that week as players from quieter servers find new homes. Read the forums to see which servers will be offering transfers out, as they are likely to become ghost towns afterwards.

During char creation you will see a list of all the servers along with their relative populations at that time, but bear in mind servers have different peak times, check the number of hops listed on the far right in the server list, those servers with the fewest hops are more likely to be populated during your peak hours as they are closer to you. Servers are separated into three groups, the euro servers and east and west coast America, although only the Euro servers are listed as such, you need to figure out which group the others belong by the number of hops.

Oh and one more thing, targeting is NOT twicth based, the option to lock onto targets and autofire as in most mmo's and pre nge swg has been available for a long time now, you only need assign a key to "repeat attack" under  the keymap options.

My Colour Is Vomit green, I puke on the tards with stupid colour sigs. My symbol is ,,!, O ,!,, My enemies are any prat with a colour sig, a meaningless personality test, or a pointless list of games and classes.
