I can't believe there are still people anticipating this game. I think it's quite obvious that Darkfall, if it ever gets released, is going to be a buggy, laggy, incomplete mess. A shame really, because the game looks really good on paper.
I suppose a lot of the people awating this game haven't been around MMOs long enough to see the writing on the wall.

Please explain to us why it's obvious to you that the game is going to be a buggy, laggy and incomplete mess if released. I think everyone else would like to see this argument.
Your assumption that 'a lot' of the people who have anticipated this release 'haven't been around MMOs long enough' to see the writing on the wall is totally false. The darkfall official forums are clear evidence that 2/3rds of it's members were UO, EQ or AC addicts at one point.
So please, if you're going to make a claim, at least do a little research on the topic for you wouldn't want to make yourself out to be a fool now would you?

A small development studio working with a shoestring budget on their first project which is a massive game that promises SO much. It's been in development for what, 8+ years? No advertising or marketing whatsoever (if I didn't frequent this website, I wouldn't even have heard of it). Little to no word/hype from beta testers (anyone even know someone who's actually played any form of the game?). Multiple delays. Shall I continue?
Like I said, the writing is on the wall. Read it.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to play the game that the devs say it will be. But realistically, the chances of that game actually existing are very slim, IMO. I hope I am very wrong.

Because, prior to this announcement, all I was hearing that release was January 22nd, FOR SURE THIS TIME!!!!

And if it doesn't release or there is NO open beta or try before you buy when February 25th comes around? Then what are you going to say?

The Diffrance is Duke looks like it might be Devolving every trailer that gets released... that said it still looks funner ;p

1. Small development studio with no prior releases does not automatically equal a bad product. We have no idea what their resumes look like. Adventurine SA is the second hand in Darkfall's development after a merger with a company named "Razorwax".
--Just to note: It's highly unlikely that these guys would have secured funding without some sort of experience under their belts. Their budget was speculated to be about 25 million.
2. We have no idea of what their actual budget is/was. We assume they're not working for free, and it's obvious that they have a deep seeded passion to create the very best possible game that they can.
3. You must understand the game to understand it's market. Darkfall will never compete with games like WoW and others like it. They've found their niche and those belonging to that niche have done a fine job at passing the word along; advertisement and marketing is unnecessary for a game like Darkfall.
What most of us fail to recognize is that they have developed their own engine technology and apparently their own client/server technology from scratch. This is a massive hurdle to leap over, and is likely a leading cause of the 8+ year development cycle. Most MMO developers in recent years have licensed pre-existing engine technology (Unreal, Gamebryo), which can easily cut 2-3 years of development out of the equation. Investory relations can also slow down the development process, especially when dealing with 3rd party VC's.
The normal development cycle for an MMO is 3 to 5 years, with it normally being closer to 5 years. Lets add in engine development, and that puts us close to 8 years.. lets say 7 for the sake of argumentation. This makes Darkfall's development cycle seem not as crazy as everyone claims it is.
These things do not equal a buggy, laggy and incomplete mess.
So in reality, Adventurine SA is actually developing two products at once, assuming that at some point they will license out their engine tech.
