RF Online: RF Online Update Interview

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Recently, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood had the opportunity to ask a few questions to the team at CCR, the company behind RF Online.

For those who might not be aware, when RF Online was first released, Codemasters was the publisher. Since then, CCR has parted ways with Codemasters and will pubish the game on their own. The company has only just ended its closed beta.

MMORPG.com:

It is quite unusual that an MMO begins with one publisher, is then shut down and re-opened with a new publisher. Can you tell us how this came to happen with RF Online?

CCR:

They told us that they were apologised for having to take their service offline between when the Codemasters service ended and now and that while it may be much more commonplace for an MMO to go from start to finish with one single publisher, that this isn’t the only way that things can be done.

They wanted to be clear that the closure wasn’t something that they were pleased with either, but that they hope that when the game is re-launched, their game will be better than ever.

“We, CCR,” they said, “will do our best fr RF Online Global Service, and we guarantee no more service suspension will be generated later”.

So basically the only difference is that this game will now be the typical F2P Asian grindfest with Item Mall.

    Thanks but no thanks.

  • PersonalRiotPersonalRiot Member UncommonPosts: 5

RF Online is an older game that was first P2P, but changed models as they found more profit from the item mall, and for a game that is about population for PvP, a F2P model works. Yes, the game is about grinding. It is about grinding, and leveling, and earning gear that can take months and months to get.

I for one am very very happy with the way CCR has handled the CB, and with events and very good support I hope everyone who is looking to get into a older style of MMO with good graphics tries it out at well.

I'm having a perspective problem here. When They (CCR) says "they said", who exactly is they? Are they talking in 3rd person?

  • VexeVexe Member Posts: 549

They were having a little trouble with engrish.

    :P

I remember trying this game a few years ago. It was better than a bunch of the other grinding games I played, but is still solely about grinding.

Hmm, I was translating what was said... Maybe I should have changed the headers to read CCR's Answer instead...

Very sad that the company now hosting (the original developers I believe) don't even seem to have NA or European support rather it is all in Korea . Codemasters was a better deal.

I can understand CM's problems toward the end, after EP2  CM basically lost most of the IG control they had over the game but no one can deny they made a shambles of there PR with the community. I wasn't one of those that got frustrated with them, but even I could see why people would.

As for CCR, well the game hasn't even been "released" yet, so let's atleast give them a chance!.

actually is not , codmasters rf was 3 updates behind and without any chance of getting those updates ( they were in a big dispute with the korean developer who wanted other way of getting money from customers this was when the game was p2p after that they just didn't want t update), the difrences are huge the codemasters rf was far far way more unbalanced then the normal korean rf ( 1 exemple the all might all desireble red and blue MAU, the thing that made all the kids to join  rf , were missing and the robots were to powerful , a good launcher could make huge bursts of dmg wiping a cora in 1 or 2 hits )

if they keep the existing characters and if they have the last update and they are able to get the updates in fairly normal time i think they will have a lot of old player comming back even though item mall can unbalance the game preatty much , i belive some a wouldn't mine to become p2p , but offcourse to be able to pay from everywere not like codemasters rf who was available in p2p form , just to some countries a lot of eastern europe players couldn't play becouse some morons from codemasters never knew that romania , bulgaria , ucraine and others were in fact in europe ( geographicaly ( hope is well written) speacking ) and later some in UE

anyway the pvp in end game is preaty fast and imersive but to get there u have to grind like a korean player meaning hard like hell , items drop at high lvl were in codemasters version like 1 item for 30 or 40 mobs wich is .......... bad ward here ......... but still you could get some good items

This game has always been the essence of hack&slash grinding themepark mmo, with pvp based on pot spamming.
But actually after taking part in korean CB/OB long years ago, I was astonished with massive battle called chip wars.
No online game ever had this amount of players in 1 place.
Can you imagine almost 2k players being on 1 relatively small map at once ?!
Of course my s***y PC almost freezed, but after lowering every option to min, I was able to kill something :)

Thanks Stradden. This was actually a good interview. I think the translation was fine, and it seems as though they expect to catch the western version with it's eastern couterpart. Hopefully that will mean it will be more interesting to a larger crowd. I remember the road to launch gathered a decent bit of interest. Thanks for covering.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside

    Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

Not really. While yes lag may play a factor into the equation, that's about the only downside when comparing the two versions. CCR GMs have been HIGHLY active in the closed beta, we haven't even hit retail yet and there are events all the time, GMs being friendly and PMing people asking what they think of the new service so far (and oddly enough, while CCR talks in engrish on their website, the GMs are FLUENT in english) and throwing down events too. We also have a website that doesn't stink horribly, but that message board system does suck. Also content is miles ahead of what we had in CM's version, 3 major updates ahead to be specific, and we are up to date with the korean version.

Having been a staunch CM supporter over the years when we were playing their version, I can definitely say this is the clear cut better version right now and I'm happy to be playing it.

    Im very skeptical,

they said that if they were to list the differences between codemasters and CCR release then it would make people un happy.

I would also be interested in knowing how they plan to tackle Gold Spammers and exploiters....  let alone the lag in chip wars.

How good is the translation in game? The engrish on the website has me slightly worried about the translation of the game.

I actually enjoyed playing this typical F2P grind fest. The thing that bothered me was their horrible player base, they were as clueless as the sun shines in the desert.I brought up on countless times changes i thought the game needed or it would fail, and the lame player base just wanted to argue and say go play something else.Well they got their wish,as the WHOLE game folded, because nobody wanted to step up and tell the developers what the game needed, this is what a blind community will do to fail a game. They act like fanbois and refuse to admit any faults of the game.

The fact that i could see it's downfall and the rest of the players could not, shows what?It shows the majority just want freebies and couldn't care less about the state of a game.If they happen to have all day and have a high level player ,they were probably happy to be able to destroy anyone with ZERO skill, but more so that little number beside their name was all that mattered.

Codemasters is also a horrible publisher, they were the ones looking after customer support.I reported botting that was so obvious even the most naive person on the planet could spot them.Their customer service would respond with their PR woman, but in reality she was not in charge, and NOTHING would EVER get done.

Offline mining, dumb idea,PVP that is all about your level and nothing more, dumb idea.Having ONE big battle area for control of a mining spot was too superficial and again ,why bother allowing lowbies to join when ONLY the highest level players matter? You need a HECK of a lot more content than just a battle for mining control,i mean geesh that kind of content a student could think of in one hour.I expect a ton more content than what this amateur developer provided.

This game PROVED that what people wanted does NOT work. They want their skill based system, well they got it and it played a o% factor in PVP or to the game or to your player. This again shows players do NOT pay attention to what works in gaming and how important the COMBAT design must be before ANYTHING works .The CORE design of game was cool and sort of fun,it just fell short by about a years worth of developing content.Even worse is that the developer had time after launch to develop some content, they chose not to,well looks what happens ,when you are lazy and cheap.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Hehe, MMO games are a bigger hit in South Korea than American Idol, football, and baseball combined in the US.

Wizardry don't talk nonsenses. I played this game damn a lot time and LVL doesn't matter so much on pvp (especially on Chip War). At first u need to think cos mass of enemies can crush even 50 without a chance to retreat. At second u need good PTs and gear (not only high grade but good choice of jewelry etc). At third ur Archons must be good in tactics otherwise u ALL will be dyin' faster than u can breath :]. I love this game and gonna play CCR version too

i'm really glad  Codemaster is out.  they are very lousy in customer service.

The grammar in this "head-lining" article is piss poor.

MMORPG.com is one of the biggest for online gaming news, yet you rely on pathetic writers who can't edit for shit.

    Sort it out guys.

    OT -

I had a hard time following RF Online when it was under Codemasters hand. Coming from a long line of mmo grind-fest's, it was kinda hard to climb onto another.

I don't expect it to have changed that much, so I can't really say I'll devote much time to it, but I'll certainly give it a try and see how much has changed.

  • Cik_AsalinCik_Asalin Member Posts: 3,033

My god is this game annoying.  Ehh...I gave it a shot, but between the complete lack of guides, a unorthodox movement system, a starting bag with a few slots that gets completely full in 2-minutes. . .i just felt I had to work way to hard to understand the game-play and the developers put in just the right speed-bumps to deter me.  Not to mention no tags on town npcs, so you have no idea whats what.  Okay...i gave it a shot...now stay away...far away.

  • GoroghGorogh Member UncommonPosts: 19

You've got a problem with bag x_X? Ummm guys ->1st quest = 2nd bag. Don't collect exelsiars if u don't need them. Names of NPCs are their tags (tool, weapon etc)...I dunno...i'm so smart or some ppl are just stupid :p

  • Cik_AsalinCik_Asalin Member Posts: 3,033

Bag whaaa? whats this x_X?  Listen...play your little game.  I didnt mean to suggest it wasnt for the elite like yourself perhaps, but go ahead. Dive in and enjoy, what I think is, a miss-mash of mess.

  • GoroghGorogh Member UncommonPosts: 19

Lol i had to bcuz u were talking a shit :p...and nooo there's no big guide on the main site . I'm not an elite...i can just read lol. Btw game is not about grinding or even lvling :). U lvl up cos u have to but it's worth of it...
