Decided to give AOC a chance, bad experience already even before playing the game.

Saw the game for 10$'s and thought I would give it a chance.

First problem keep getting error messages about the size of the source files being incorrect during installation.

So Google it and see its common problem and I will need to download the files that have not been installed properly from the bad disk or whatever is causing it.

Start the patcher and its almost 3gb's for just the updates so that will be 2 hours until I can even see what files I need to download ontop of that, and there's a chance it might be most of the full client because of the problem, I don't know.

Then I go to account registration whilst I'm downloading enter in my key and I get this:

This key is for the Age of Conan European Edition. It includes 30 days of game time beginning on launch day; May, 23rd 2008.

So basically I paid 10$'s for nothing, because the game is not installing properly so I probably need to download most of the client anyway, and to make it even worse the "30 days of FREE PLAY INCLUDED" started in May of last year when the game launched, and Funcom want me to pay another 10$'s for my first month of play.

Not happy, are there any free trials or buddy keys someone could give me?, because I'm not going to pay for the game, then maybe have to download it anyway, and then pay twice for the first month just to see if I like it.

*EDIT I misread the free trial period information but I still think its badly worded and should be updated to prevent confusion considering launch happened last year.

I think you are reading that 'starting in May' part wrong.   I think what they were trying to say is that if you had the box early, you couldn't start playing UNTIL may.

As far as I know, there is not any type of box that would limit your first 30 days to the actual first 30 days the game was released.

You are being punished for not keeping the faith. There is no other game besides DF.

But seriously I'm sure you can get it running if you try, and I haven't heard anyone being limited on when their 30 days started.

Ofcourse the key will work! all keys are that way. Why would they work before the game went live?

  • PolarizationPolarization Member Posts: 1,410

Well I don't know what else to say, I've copy pasted all that it says in account creation screen, and it says the free 30 days started at launch and not when I activate the key like everyother MMO I've ever brought.

Under that I have to enter my credit card details and choose how many months I want to subscribe for to create the account, so my "30 days free time" that it clearly says I get on the front of the box apparently was only for 30 days after the launch in may last year, seems like a bit of a con to me.

Are there anything like buddy keys or free trials someone could give me so I can atleast try the game before paying for 1 months subscription after already paying for the game and "30 days of free play" that expired 30 days after launch?

If anyone still does not beleive me i will screencap and host the pic of the account page.

again.. you are misreading it.  The reason that text is there is so that if someone got their hands on the box BEFORE the launch, they would know that the 30 days doesn't start UNTIL launch day.

Also, every game makes you enter a CC number when you first set up the account.

    Just do the following

    1. Enter Key

    2. Enter cc information

    3. Finish setting up your account

    4.  Go back and delete your credit card information

You will get your free 30 days and your CC information will be gone.

If what you are saying is true.. there would have been a ton of posts about it already.

"It includes 30 days of game time beginning on launch day; May, 23rd 2008."

Seems easily open to misinterpretation to me, but I'll take your word for it, and select 1 month subscription and see what happens, not every MMO I've played required CC and subscription options set up just to use your free trial period, they normally ask for that to continue playing after your free trial expires in my experience.

I don't know why it does not just say includes 30 days of game time beginning on your activation day, not beginning on launch day.

Thanks for your help, and if I need to download nearly all the client anyway because of the problem installing it will be days before I even attempt to play anyway.

I got the game from a friend who's computer can't play it. He bought it on launch day. I already had a buddy key in place, so I used his CDs to install the game. Once my buddy key ran dry, I used the CD Key he had, and it gave me the 30 days.

So yeah, you're reading it wrong.

  • SpellshaperSpellshaper Member UncommonPosts: 419

As it was said before. You will GET 30days free, when you register your credit card or game time code as in any other game.
You can delete your credit card info next day (or when you are actually in game for sure :) ) and you wont pay anything.

And to the other problem. It is your CD-ROM drive error or discs are damaged. When I was installing game from original DVDs again this year, I get same error. I just clean my discs and it worked again!

Also you only need patcher. The rest can be downloaded from Internet and if you have fast connection it takes less than 6 hours.

Hey sorry your experiencing a rough start, but basically this is what to do right away. Run the simple config, check the files, do it often if you continue to play and initially right after install from DVD there will be lots of little to large updates, I'm afraid it is just something to experience once only in this situation.

Good luck when you get in game.

Thanks for the help and corrections/ clarifications everyone, I still think its badly worded but I must of been jumping to conclusions considering all the horror story's I've been reading about Funcom for months.

After a few more attempts over they day and getting the same HTTP 500 error I managed to finally get my account setup eventually, but then got more alarming messages about inability's to validate the key and then no such user account, just as I was about to give up I checked my emails and I had got the account verification.

Running the game on high settings with 24inch HD widescreen looks very impressive and the sound and music is also top notch, too soon to judge the actual game yet though.

I will do a review after my free month is up for anyone interested in buying the game now that its such a low price and has had months of updates/patches since its launch.

As your new to the game, don't base your opinion on tortage starting zone. Its the best and well setup zone in the game but they have really improved on other zones too.

From launch to now the game is alot better overall, most the bugs are ironed out and zones have been better populated with quests.

His review will say the game blows.

    Fact

  • PolarizationPolarization Member Posts: 1,410

Ok first impressions after getting to level 15 with a barbarian:

Graphics, sound effects, NPC dialogue and music of the highest quality, but that's not a priority for me personally.

Character creation again of the highest quality with many option, I think as good or even better then Perfect World's

Not had any major bugs or a single CTD or error message yet after many hours of play.

Just few small animation problems, and graphical glitches.

Client performance seems good under light loads but not stressed it yet.

First impressions of Combat are interesting, temporary buff's for block mode, dodging sideways and backwards, leaping forward, area effect cone melee damage, and sidestrafing/ moving during swings, fps ranged. And lots of different skills, classes and room for  role specialization like any other MMO.

Quests are just the generic average ones from any other MMO so far , but the Tortage area is well crafted and fun to explore.

A major problem for me is its very sparsely populated and not had the opportunity to group with anyone yet, does not seem to be much community yet just playing it as a single player game I will see if there is any change after the starting area.

Even after the initial problems I had installing this and getting the account setup, and this not really being my type of MMO,this game in its current state is definitely worth buying for 10 dollars just for the Tortage area gameplay IMHO, whether or not its worth subscribing after the free month long term I will have a more informed opinion later.

If you like music, just wait until you get to Cornall Valley (I believe that's what it's called). If you're Cimmerian it's where you go after Tortage (but you can talk to a traveller to get there)

Music is absolutely beautiful in that area.

This is the factor I think that keeps me from giving it another go.  I was there at launch and all the areas were so well populated.  Tortuga, 3 main cities, all bustling with players and even though half the time they were trying to kill me, it was still quite fun.

When I quit a few months later it was in large part to the fact I no longer saw people much of anywhere, and it was a bit sad. (didn't help that two guilds of friends disbanded and left the game either)

I'd suggest you give it a try now after the merges.  It's a different story now.  ;)

Well I have to agree 100% about the wording of the "free 30 days" I was like wait what.....it said 30 days for free.....yet I'm paying......it said about it starting in may I'm like.....WHAT!

Then how ever I read it properly.

As for the download.....lol what do you expect? It had a bad bad start, it's completely understandable.....I had a bad start too, but it totally made up for it in gameplay. This game has seriously improved. Also 2 hours for updating? Lol.......it took me about half an hour.

I had a similar experience to the Op about 5 days ago when my game arrived.

It wasn't easy getting an account and i was stunned to find that even though my game comes with 30 days free, i would still need a credit card to get in game

Funcom really need to streamline the account creation process to make it easier for new players if they actually want AoC to succeed..

I consider myself intelligent enough to create an account for an MMORPG but getting one on AoC certainly wasn't easy.

If they had released the game in a more complete state, the patches wouldn't need to be 3gb in size and they could save money on server bandwidth.

So yeah, i can see why they get labelled 'Failcom' . The game really isn't that bad once you actually get in. It has the best graphics i've seen in any mmo so far and the ability to create a female avatar with a crooked nose, and then walk around with your tits out is certainly a unique feature which i've not seen in any other game!

Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.

I guess most people were looking for more than just crooked noses and tits.

Personally I believe it was the hype that killed Age of Conan during the first couple of months. People were expecting a revolutionary wow killer and when players saw it was just hype, they quit.

If Funcom had been honest from day one, they would have retained much more players. People forgive you when you fail but they don't forgive when you fail and lie about it.

I paid about 9 dollars fo this game but when I'm done leveling to 80 I'm going to either sell my account or something like that. So I definitely didn't waste the money on the game, I think I wasted the money on a graphics card, but oh well it plays crysis so no worries there.

  • LeagolxLeagolx Member Posts: 222

where is everyone finding these $9 aoc games its only been out a year and its already in the bargin ben????
