It worked this morning. kudos to FC.

First impressions after 15 minutes of messing around
water looks great, best water of any game I have ever played. Underwater looks even better and since I have been a recreational diver for almost 20 years I can attest it is quite realistic. On top when swimming though the effects need to be toned down a notch or two or even three. The effects are good but over the top. More is not always better, I would cut the effect in half if I were the art director.
shadows are great. DX10 shadows in LoTRO are very very good but I have to give AoC the edge here.
vegetation movement - not so good. Looks like seaweed moving in a current. Not very realistic at all. LoTRO's DX9 movement is better
I did not get a chance yet to see much else, I may play with it more tonight. Overall the game is damn pretty though, but even in DX 9 it is the best looking MMO on the market.
performance. 29 - 30 FPS in jungle area. I don't remeber my exact settings but I di jack the AA up to 4X, I cannot abide jaggies in my games First impression though is the DX10 performance stil has a ways to go. Framerates get cut in half from DX9 to DX 10 with same overall settings. In comparison my Lotro DX10 framerates are the same if not a bit better than they are in Win XP and DX9
BTW To beat the fanbois to the punch and this is just my opinion here. Anyone who posts that the graphics effects in the game are "jawdropping" or amazing really need to step away from the computer, take off the tinfoil hat and get out of Mom's basement for a nice long walk in the real world. Opening my front door and finding Anjelina Jolie standing there in a thong would be jawdropping and amazing. Animated trees moving in a computer game is more along the lines of mildly interesting.

Nice testing done there Jack. I have not messed around with Windows 7 yet. What are your comments on Windows 7 in general compared to the Vistas?

I have never used Vista so I cannot make a comparison. I can only compaare it to XP. So far I have found it to be as fast and stable as XP. The only game where I have noticed a significant FPS loss is AOC in DX10, it cuts the FPS in half easily and is a bit persnickity about launching. In Win 7 and DX9 AoC is runs as well as it does in XP. To be fair though, Funcom is still tweaking the DX10 client and I am sure by the time they release it off the test server it will run as well as the DX9 client.
I am in love with the LoTRO version of DX10 and get around 60+ FPS in Bree with all sliders maxxed , 4X AA, and everthing else set as high as I can get it. Textures and overall graphics are much better than the DX9 version. Tweaking the AA to 8x though means a big hit in FPS down to around 30FPS.
All in all though I love Windows 7 and will be upgrading my ram this weekend and downloading the 64 bit version. If it performs as well or better than the 32 bit MS has me sold on it.

having used every OS of windows since Win 3.1....i can say without a doubt, Win 7 is what vista should have been.....stable, speedy, and not a resource hog. Vista is like Win ME compared to Win 7. I'll definitely be picking it up when released.
Been running the DX10 version on Vista 64bit (i7 with 6GB RAM). I can run the DX10 on full settings with no issues whatsoever.
In regards to how DX10 looks, it seems to add a bit more "atmosphere" to the game, but honestly I'm not sure it's really that big a deal. The underwater effects are nice, but honestly, how much time does one spend underwater in this game?
Are you playing an internal Alpha version of AoC that nobody else has ever seen? There is no DX10 in AoC. Having a DX10 compatible graphics card and DX10 installed does nothing, since the game still uses DX9.
The dx10 version of AoC has been on the test server for 1 month now. Everyone playing AoC can install the test client and check it out.

Although not quite fully optimized, it certainly adds that bit extra level of immersion for me.
Looking forward to it coming onto the live servers hopefully some point in February.

something tells me people will raise holy hell and start calling FC programmers idiots unless they get it optimized to where the frame rates between the DX9 version and trhe DX10 version are more comparable.. With AoC I take a 50% FPS cut going from DX9 in Windows 7 to DX10 in Windows 7.

I've seen the current state of DX10. There is no chance of it coming to live in February. My money is on mid or late March.
