Instead of waiting 10 more years for darkfall to be released why dont we gather some people from mmorpg and make our own mmorpg we know what we want, they dont know what we want, so what are WE waiting for?

The pub would have been a better place to post this than DF forums.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Do you have any experience making a game, let along a 3d game? If so, you've got a first step, but only a first step. Do you understand to make a decent game that can compete with commercial games you've got to be on the leading edge with regards to graphics at the start? Do you understand how to do distributed programming? After all game servers are clusters of computers networked by some networking medium. Do you know the details of databases (where all the in game items come from) ? Do you know how to synchronize the actions of X number of players doing X number of things all within each other so that player X sees what playing Y does around the same time as Z, B A? Do you know how to construct meshes and construct texture maps? Do you know what a cube map is? Environment mapping? Shadow mapping? Bump mapping is (and how it is done)? Do you know some NPR techniques? Do you know how to construct shaders? Do you know socket programming? Do you know how to construct and debug multi-threaded programs? The list goes on for what you need to know for a decent MMO. Note that I did not mention game mechanics or story requirements.
pwned
is where you mess up.
Why would we make a mmo when our dream mmo is coming out in a month?
I once made my own game...
You get a group of friends together, watch Judge Dredd, and drink everytime Sylvester Stalone says something stupid.
If you can finish the movie without blacking-out or being rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, you win!!
..because I spent my last $50 million dollar bill on a new winter hat and scarf
Or I'd be so there!
I'm not creative enough to have a signature
Why would you do that? The whole reason you have to wait 10 years for Darkfall is because a bunch of dudes came together and decided to make their own game.
i actually tried to make a simple mmorpg once where u could conenct to ppl with ip (like p2p). i used a 3d java engine and got up to the point where players could conenct, see each other, and chat. check out the screens... i tried to base my game on an old mmorpg that alot of people liked:

my suggestion -- stop "waiting" for this game. The odds are so stacked against it, it isnt even funny. Lets just start with the fact it has been in development for far too long -- If it even comes out, I highly doubt it will be any good.
Regardless, I have said it time and time again -- this game is vaporware.
Sure, I am in... Now where would we find someone who can borrow us 10 million bucks?
We have actually discussed it a lot but it is hard times right now and few companies wants to make a gamble, it is a lot of money.
Whole lot easier and cheaper to get buy a PNPRPG, get some friends some dice and some beer (miniatures optional) and just play it olschool. This way you can make the game what you want without having to drag 900,000+ strangers along with you.
""But Coyote, you could learn! You only prefer keyboard and mouse because that's all you've ever known!" You might say right before you hug a rainforest and walk in sandals to your drum circle where you're trying to raise group consciousness of ladybugs or whatever it is you dirty goddamn hippies do when you're not busy smoking pot and smelling bad."
Coyote's Howling: Death of the Computer
Guildwars was made for a lot less, and they still made their own GFX engine. I think you could make a desent game on a 10M budget, maybe even less.
A lot of money doesn't really make a good game. But it is still more cash needed than anyone here can get (unless we have Richard Garriot or Bill Gates as members, you never know ) .
The fact that you dont seem to understand (or at least, appreciate) the real costs involved in developing a game aside...
Do you really think the people here (and i use that term very loosely) know how to properly design and develop a game? They can't even handle posting responsibly. 90% of the posts here are whines flames and trolling. And you think those same people can actually handle real commitment on something productive? I think they have a long way to go before they can prove they are ready for it. A bunch of kids that think they know what they want is not enough.
You don't know what vaporware truly is until this community tries to produce anything of value. I would leave it to the people that know what they are doing.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
That happens to be the basis of most game development ideas LIKE DARKFALL.

My previous post was simply to point out all the knowledge need to really understand what is needed to even begin to start a serious MMO. I'd thought I would also point out that being able to constructively answer a question does not imply technical skill of any level. I would say it supports the theory that the people posting are not of the maturity to really have the training and ability to even begin to write/program or design an MMO.
Want to learn how to make a MMO? First learn how to program a good language even if you don't plan on doing most (or any) of the programming. Learning what is involved in just basic programing will help you, as a "non-programmer" begin to understand what is technically possible, which then can guide your high level design of the game.
When learning how to do anything you want to built up to it, not just jump in and try to tackel the problem withouth really understanding the what the problem all involves. You may want to begin with a MUD, or a simple graphical 2D game. Then experiment doing 3d. 3d graphics are much more complicated than 2d (e.g. some concepts involve calculus, which you don't typically find in 2D).
Hope this helps.
lol, exactly.
lol, exactly.
Which is exactly why we shouldn't support it. Not only should we not support it, but we should make fun of them every step of the way. Right?
there are alot of rpgs made by groups of players, go into Warcraft 3 and go on battle.net. Look in the custom games lists and you're bound to find one
I agree. And while you are at it, don't be silly and pay some car lot or bank to finance some piece of crap new car or truck and pay for it for like six or seven years! Build your own damn car much cheaper and more efficient as well. Why make it require gasoline? Hell, make it run on your sewage or trash instead! Great idea right?
Sounds great. LOL. It's so much easier to talk big then to actually cash the checks your mouth is writing.
Lets make our own mmorpg!
Yep, let's make our own car and our own TV and our own house and our own electric stove while we are at it!
Hell, why have to work and make the governments money since we are talking all big? Let's just make our own damn money! It couldn't be that hard to print up a few hundred dollar bills, right?
LOL. I could go on and on, but I think you see my point.

I just had a crazy idea. So, we want a game by gamers for gamers. I'm really stepping out of the box on this...
...start up a non-profit organization, get funding (i hear it's easy to do if you have a legitimate non-profit organization). The purpose is to develop a game for gamers, which will be distributed freely and will not require monthly subscriptions (is that non-profit enough? i don't know much about non-profit organizations)...
...you may be saying "That won't work..." for a number of reasons. Server upkeep, have to pay staff, etc...
...well, hopefully funding and donations will be sufficient for paying staff and getting the game released. What we won't do is provide servers. The gamers will provide their own servers (private WoW servers comes to mind).
The gamers running their own servers will be able to add their own content, develop and share patches with other gamers who are running their own servers, and pretty much create their own unique experience on their own server. If you think about it, using this method of allowing the gamers to host their own servers, the possibilities could be endless.
The gamers would be obligated to funding the private servers probably via donations.
This would truly be the game by gamers for gamers. It would bring a whole new level to customization. The gamers will be able to design their own content (and this is possible for those who know what they're doing). Those who don't know how to do it will be in a good situation anyway, because they can play the game without paying a cent (unless they wish to support their server by donating).
I think it's possible, but would be a lot of work. Primarily, the developers would have to lay out the foundation of the game: world physics and graphics engine, some basic character models, etc. They would also need to design a game with an open-ended storyline, which will allow room for the gamers to decide what happens.
I don't know, food for thought. Kind of a neat idea. Hell, think about it, you could have your own server and play the game without limitation with just an obligation to keep your server(s) up and running. It could work.

First of all, with gamers running their own servers they probably wouldn't be able to hold that many people, not the thousands that regular MMORPGS play, unless of course they are shelling out the doe but who wants to do that?? Secondly, most gamers don't know how to develop patches and new content, they just know how to play the game.

Real as Reality Television!!!
yea, the expense of the servers would be the biggest issue.
however, this is just to point out that it's possible, search for "free wow servers" on google and click on the first link (i think it's xtremetop100.com). if you look at that page, you'll see there's tons of gamers out there already doing this.
you are right, most gamers wont be able to do this. but those with the time and dedication and technical knowledge will be able to.

Since making a game is both insanely expensive, and moreso time consuming, why not just play D&D? Far less money, far less time, much larger resource for making actual worlds to play in. Imagination trumps visual masturbation everytime.
Granted, yes, having an actual MMO that rocked would be nice. But, hell, that could be never from the looks of things now-a-days.
Actually I plan on making my own MMORPG...
but I'm still working on making my own car.
