I Need a Game That ISN'T Boring

BrifBrif Member UncommonPosts: 529

The only P2P games I have played are WoW and WAR because I don't want to buy a game and it ending up being rubbish.  I have tried out quite a few F2P games but they either don't have good gameplay, don't have an endgame, or are just huge grind fests.  Please help me find a new game to play.

I want a game that I can spend hours on and never get bored.

These are the things that it must have:

1) WASD movement

2) Some kind of PvP

3) Decent endgame

4) Gameplay isn't boring

Things that I would like:

1) Good endgame content that will keep me playing

2) Exciting gameplay

3) Lots of PvP (large scaled battles, world objectives, etc)

4) Grouping is not required to level

5) Decent customization/race/class options

6) Open explorable world

If you know of any good game (that is in open beta or currently released) that has any of those features, then please tell me about it.  Or if you just want to tell me about a game that you think is fun, go ahead.

I will greatly appreciate any response.

Since you already know the games you're looking for I suggest checking out their specific forums on this site for the answers. The questions you have for each of them has been answered many times and can generally be found on the first page under each forum.

If you want suggestions on other MMOs you're going to have to be more specific on what you're looking for.

I played 3 of the 4 games you mentioned (didn't find the time to start with EQ2), so I can answer a bit here...

Both LotR and FFXI are no PvP games. FFXI has no PvP whatsoever and LotR has something called monsterplay implemented, which is more of a gankfest where you siege 5 locations, rather then real player vs player. You'd either like it or hate it (I hated it...)

AoC, LotR and FFXI all havea huge amount of lore. I'm not very familiar with Conan's lore, but what I've played there, I think it was pretty good.

LotR's lore is done according to Toliens work, with the LotR in mind. You actually follow the book, and get background lore along the way. With that, whole new stories have been added as well (and that's done very good too).

FFXI has the usual FF share of lore. I gave it a try and liked the quests in general.

    Endgame content ...

LotR has a lot more now since the release of MoM, though I didn't get into Moria yet (I rerolled...)

AoC's endgame content is mostly related to PvP, thought there are some hunting grounds for maxed out chars too

FFXI has thelargest amount of huntinggrounds for maxed out chars.

    Solo / Party play

AoC and LotR can both be played solo a long way. Some quests realy give the need for a party.

FFXI on the other hand is a real party game. You need to duo pretty quick already, because otherwise the game gets too hard to play. This improves fun, but if if you're a real casual player FFXI might become hardfor the lack of time to get a party...

    Some additional info...

Both AoC and LotR have a short grind. in about 3-5 months you can max out your char.

FFXI on the other hand has one of the worse levelgrinds around. My brother has played FFXI since the US/Euro release and after 3 years (1 year gaming time) he has only 2 classes on level 75, and 2 others around level 50/60. But the subclass system in FFXI gives you the oppertunity to see the game from different perspectives.

As said before... No experience with EQ2. Perhaps I should give it a try one of these days. I hear lots of good things about it ;)

Since FFXI has no PvP, I don't think I could play it.  Age of Conan sounds really fun but I have heard bad things about it.  I might try out lord of the rings since the game is only like $10, I probably won't have much fun with it because of the PvP and the bad choice of races.  If they added an evil faction to LoTRO (Orcs, Goblins) then it would be playable.

Hmm... that's a pretty tough list of requirements - perhaps if you ranked all of them?

The one game historically which I think comes closest to what you're looking for is Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC).  Indeed it pretty much satisfies every requirement you've listed, BUT, unfortunately I think you may be a few years too late... that game was awesome in it's heydey, but I believe that the servers are pretty empty nowadays (though I haven't personally logged in to verify this, it seems that very few people talk about DAOC anymore).

One game that is coming (it could be weeks or it could be months away, depending upon if you ask a fanboy or troll) and seems to also meet your requirements (except for "end-game" which obviously nobody knows about yet) is Darkfall Online.

One more big PvP game out there is EvE Online, though that's sci-fi based, you never see your actual character (just a ship) and thus there's little meaningful notion of races/classes.  One can also debate how exciting it is - in my experience it amounted to an hour of boredom followed by 2 minutes of sheer terror...

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but off the top of my head those are the games which jump out at me.  As to the other games you've listed (EQ2, LotRO, FFXI, AoC), I have experience with all of them except FFXI.  The only one with lots of PvP is AoC, but the customization is pretty marginal and the openness of the world is also debatable - it's mostly zone based and lacks the openness that I prefer... otherwise though it's a pretty good game, and the graphics are exceptional (considering my tastes at least).

I wouldn't write-off AoC quite yet... the "bad things" you've heard about it are quite debatable in my opinion.  Personally I've never had any technical issues (I've played since launch) and the lack of DX10 at launch wasn't that big of a deal to me... some will shout from the roottops about how Funcom lied about its features, but in my opinion so long as the game is fun, that's the #1 thing to consider.

One other game which has just popped into my mind is Pirates of the Burning Sea (PotBS)... lots of PvP there as well, but the game play is much slower than other games - battles with another ship last 5+ minutes, not 10-20 seconds.

    1) GW (in addition to point and click)

    2) GW (Endgame heh... lvl cap is reached in the half way atleast in the first campaign. You get maxed no matter what. Missions with actual story and cutscenes and man... that PvP!)

    3) GW (Very solid. Skills have impact on the game both sides PvE and PvP.)

    4) GW (Very intence. It is all competitive however, no ganking. 1on1, 4vs4,8vs8 or some faction wars, no RvR)

    5) GW (10 Classes, every char chooses 2 classes, every char has 7 attributes depending on your class combination, every class has 150+ skills, no races)

    6) GW (AI controlled henchmen or partly player controlled customizable heroes)

    7) Something else. I wouldn't say it's open, there's lots to explore. That's why there are explorable areas. But they are instances every single one of them.

Oh... and no monthly fee. Just buy the campaign(s).

I can say only that Guild Wars is your best hope and this is not the first time I've said this here.

I think Aion (not out yet for U.S. and EU)

I don't know of any game at the moment that has all of those. Possibly DAoC. Possibly Conan though the world doesn't really feel open to me.

Maybe EQ II if you play on the pvp servers.

I play a boatload of MMOs, and I like most of them. To the OP: You're not going to enjoy any of them unless you make a point of broadening your interests and then play several games. There are games that have strengths from your list, but you'll have a hard time finding one that meets all your requirements or even most of them.

I recommend you go back to WoW and try a new class on a different type of server.

I played WoW on and off for a year, mostly hating it but plodding on through it because my friends played. I never really enjoyed the game until I found a class that gave me lots to do and which fit my play style.

WoW's greatest weakness is the huge differences between classes in terms of the thought and effort they require. This is also a strength, because it allows the game to appeal to both casual and hardcore players, and it means you can enjoy the game if you're a genius or a moron, a shut-in gaming snob or an overworked person who just wants to relax & kill a few monsters.

Blizzard can't make a little window pop up and say "You might enjoy this class because it's easy mode and you only have to press four buttons." A lot of people would feel insulted, including those who have made challenging or interesting specs for themselves at the endgame. You have to figure it our on your own, and it might not be worth the trouble, but there is no other game that fits your requirements.

I have played all WoW classes to at least level 30.  The PvP is very weak and the gameplay just gets very very boring.

  • spinach8puffspinach8puff Member CommonPosts: 864

The game play from a character in WoW that is level 30 is not equal to the game play you will experience at end game. However I do agree the PvP isn't anything amazing.

I suggest you give Lineage II a shot since it fits the majority of what you're looking for even though it is an aged game. If that doesn't work for you then I agree with what Sovrath suggests.

Nice posts there everybody. I think you should Lineage 2 on your list. That's a good game. The Karma  system (LineageII) and PvP Consequence (AoC) is in fact somewhat similar in that "Good" players will be rewarded, while "Bad" guys will face some hardships. Lineage II mainly does this through the type of drops people get, while AoC does this through expelling the "Bad" characters to the Murder and Black Market camps. The players can of course just keep being a Murderer but Guards kill murderers on eyesight and other players also hunt you for more PvP XP. So, most players eventually try to redeem themselves through socalled social service quests so that they can be accepted in the community again. Kind of fun.

I would say Lineage II or Age Of Conan.

  • BrifBrif Member UncommonPosts: 529

I have decided to buy Lineage 2, I don't think my computer can handle AoC so I'll wait until I get a new PC to get it.

  • BrifBrif Member UncommonPosts: 529

I just got Lineage 2 in the mail today.  The WASD movement in is so buggy that it is not even useable and I can't even jump.  I really hate point and click and games so I don't think I can even play this game.  Two people suggested it to me even though I said that I needed WASD movement.  What a waste of thirty dollars.

  • BrifBrif Member UncommonPosts: 529

    Can anyone suggest anything else?

I wish I could play AoC but my video card isn't good enough.

    Air Rivals

Mouse and WASD movement. No point and click. F2P but it also has a CS.

Massive PvP. The game is built on it.

It's dark side is grinding. The rewards are worth it if you can stand the grind.

Tons of weapons/equipment. 4 gears to choose depending on your style.

I played it for almost 3 years. If you've never played it before then I definately think you should try it out.

you could try RF Online when i played it, it was free and looked like a si-fi version of WoW
