So with Deployment 15 out, I thought I would try my old characters and see what new things have changed in the world since I left almost a year ago. Was pretty funny to see a few bases destroyed around the two planets, and a lot more epic level mobs running around. Of course, most of the zones had little to no people in them and it looks like the majority of the 50s have left the game. So I went in and tried the new content out (the 2 new mishes in abyss and earth).
First I'd like to say that TR was a good game when the population was there. There would always be lots of people around and when you 50 and went to the level 45+ zones, you could always get a party together or at least have some fun blowing up the bane.
Now to the sad part. The FPS is quite lame, and doesn't even work unless you have a scoped rifle (the sniper one). Given that there are no hittable body areas, the usefullness of FPS is sadly non-existent. Add to that, the viewable distance being so limited and that the sniper still has crappy armor, you end up with the same old problems that plaqued the class before. Take a shot at maximum range and that mob and any buddy he can find comes right to you, regardless of how uber your hiding spot was. But, this does work well against human players who stand still long enough for you to take a shot.....
The new instances with the new Epic level monsters. These new mobs are difficult, in a small party of 3-4 peeps, we could barely kill one before one of the epic caretakers would rez them or we would be wiped out completely. Even with the new yellow-grade armor, the instances are no longer fun, just plain difficult and at some points, impossible. Without a full party, headsets and really nice purple/yellow gear, these instances are impossible. Although I did not try it on my spy with polymorph running, so that may be possible, but anyone else is screwed w/o a full group (and even then, may still be screwed).
So Earth is interesting and all, yes you can run thru destroyed buildings, explosions everywhere, new Mark ## prototype hunters, striders, etc, and tons of new drops. But the instance quickly devolves into a panic run rather than anything fun. Not much new, and what is new has been done better in other games (gears of war).
The new Omega Base is also quite difficult, you may even get halfway through it before you face the very nasty and extremely overpowered Doctor (a spy no less). His sword is not as nerfed as players, and he's protected by 4 super elite omega mob thingys. He himself is also rather epic. He sliced my poor Grenadier with 250k armor down to nothing in 3 quick hits. This is not fun, not one bit.
So it was a good game in its heyday (a year ago?) and was fun up until you hit the 40s. The PvP left a bad taste in my mouth, and the many bugs (even more so w/o support) make it more of a hassle than anything else. I'd have to suggest letting it rest in peace. Without any kind of support from NCSoft or even that d!ckhead Garriot, the game is better left for dead.
If you haven't tried it before, do give it a shot to see what the fuss was about, up until 30 its a great game. Then it just kind of fizzles out, especially with no population.

The game gets shut down in short time
Alot of the new stuff is most likely far from being 100% complete. The problems in the instances may be due to thinking the level cap would have been raised prior to that stuff going in. Though kudos for them to try to make it interesting, makes one wonder if they're auditioning for another company. Wouldn't be a bad $10 monthly game, just never really got a chance fron NC.
What do you mean it never got a chance? Look up the financial report from NCSoft and see how TR was losing subs at an alarming rate. They went from almost 40k at the end of Q2 to an average of 28k for Q3, which means at the end of Q3 they were below 28k. You can not average 28k for the quarter after averaging 40k the quarter before without a large loss of players. The game itself had very low retention because it was easy, lack of content and lack of social aspect. It was a solo MMO.
Deployment 16 is on PTS with the long waited mechs for the various professions. From what I hear, they look pretty sweet.
Who cares? The game is done, turn it over already. As a beta player and having played up to lvl 48 on my Medic I am sad to see the game go, but whats done is done. TR is simply one of those games that had tremendous potential but got the shaft due to an absentee landlord, Devs that listened to carebears and fierce competition in the MMO market.

Even with the long wait they did the typical TR half-assed version. The original plan for them was one per class. What they ended up with is less than the plan was and it still took a year to get them out. PAU/Mechs are just one of the reasons this game failed. The devs talked a great game and delivered less than stellar results every single time.
The game is dead in a month, they're just shelling out all the crap they haven't completed in the past year to make TR go out with a bang.
