... "Why was it necessary to do this now?
It should make it easier to find squads and generally find other players with the same interests to fight against the Bane menace until the very end. "...
No, I don't see the point. Can someone with at least bits of his brainpower switched on tell me why are they merging servers a few weeks before shutdown?

I don't know why.
Some of the possible reasons could be:
To save money on server fees, - maybe the server lease is up and they figured they could easily move people to a couple of servers instead of a few deserted ones. Why not make the last month enjoyable as much as possible by consolidating everything and making it easier to find a group.
Maybe they own the servers and wanted to use the extra servers for another game to expand. - Again, makes the TR players have a good experience for the last month.
I'm sure there are other reasons as well, but as long as it doesn't hurt the game anymore, why dwell on it.
No matter the reason, it looks like its a win win situation for the players since it improves grouping ability.
well im sorry to hear it that its finally going down but i think the server merging is a bad idea most people i think would rather just stay where their at i dont think anyone really is going to get much done knowing its all going to be over in just a few more weeks. Its sad that fury had to go to.
If your going to ban the trolls please for our sake ban the Fan Boys too.
Well, servers cost money to run. Money they apparently don't have, if they're shutting down the game as a whole.
It's much easier to monitor 1 single server.
So here's someone... with bits of brainpower explaining that to you.
Its shame this game is going over i was consider some time ago to buy (no trial at all in that time?) but i dont.
Ehh, it happens. Richard Garriot obviously regrets it. The Developers regretted all the cash and effort the pushed into it, while they were doing it as well. Lots of them have blogs online talking about it too.
My hope: Sci-Fi MMO's take a lesson from RGTR and avoid the same mistakes it made and the lackluster launch it had as well.
Luckily there is Earthrise, Huxley, Fallen Earth and Fallout MMOs to look forward to. Add to that Star Trek MMO (if it ever gets done by someone not declaring bankruptcy) and Stargate Online. Looks to be a good time to invest in a sci-fi mmo and forget about TR and AO.
I didn´t get it.
They are going to merge the servers, as far as i understand, there are 4 of them now, 3 US and 1 EU, so after the quake it will be only 1 server... does that mean that the game is going down after few weeks? why will it go down? 1 server will be more fun for some players, others may dislike due to the lag factor.
You guys think that merging servers means that the water is almost above the neck?

Quick and easy answer money... They're shuting down TR on Feb 28 because of money in the first place.
What's the point in them throwing away another couple thousand for 4 server when 1 will do with the current player population. So what if european and west coast get a little laggy and leave a few weeks early? it's not like they're paying for this...... is what NCSoft is thinking.
They announced a couple of months ago the game closes on February 28th. The water went above the neck and then the head and drown the victim months ago.
TR does not have enough people playing to lag 1 server.
I don't see how a server merge a few weeks before the game shuts down permenantly would effect anyone in a negative way. So why the complaint? If you enjoy RGTR then enjoy it's last few weeks and then move on?
p.s. I didn't play this game until it became free. Then I decided to try it out since it wouldn't cost me anything and I have to say it was yet another poorly executed attempt at an excellent concept to merge the FPS and MMORPG genres into one game. Any future attempts at establishing the MMOFPS RPG genre I hope realize that they have to take only the elements that can be merged seemlessly and create new elements to develope this sort of game. Every game that has attempted the MMORPG+FPS has failed because it leans to much to one or the other making either the RPG or the FPS aspect of the game clumsy or underdeveloped. I look forward to the first successful MMOFPS RPG.
Server merges I can understand but new content patches coming does not make any sense at all.

OK got it!
Thanks everyone, uninstalling the game.
I tried up this game after it went free, i kind-a like it, at least it has some cool gear and all... but i also saw a lack of people in it, so i thought something was wrong, cause i totaly turnned my back on this game with the reviews by the time it got released, when everyone said it was a dissapointment according to the major advertisement before launching.
Got to find a replacement.

Not many people and it will save on server costs.
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Nonsense. Server merges are much more expansive than paying one more additional month for servers. In additional, they have a contract with server-rooms for much longer time, they are not going to end the contract on february. I would understand if they used these servers for Aion, but that won't launch until 28. february (TR shutdown) so I don't get the merges at all.
Plus now with the new content updates, there's a chance NCsoft will keep up this game as F2P with micro transactions.

NCSoft has not said a word about keeping it up F2P with micro transactions. Have a source?
Why are you asking him to cite a source? he clearly said "a chance", as in personal opinion. He never claimed anyone at NC had made such a statement.
