My rant about steam/valve

BetaguyBetaguy Member UncommonPosts: 2,629

I went out and bought a game today, it was called "Left 4 dead". Well, I get home and install it and presto! The game turns into Left 4 downloading.

Seriously, Steam! I suggest you help those of us with the "server too busy" issue asap. I didn't pay 49.99 to have 7.5gb of space removed from my hard drive.

I am not going to reiterate all the troubleshooting methods. I have tried them all! I also hate sounding like a repeating piece of sh!t. I repeat myself for nobody.

I will however give you some insight to my skill set in the computer world. I am a 30 (almost 31) year old Senior Network Architect. I have been working with the Government for 10+ years. I was building computers out of matchsticks in kinder-garden. I then swiftly progressed to programming protocols in high school, then onto security of large corporate networks.

I now design, implement, and maintain 100,000+ node networks.

I will not sit here and be insulted by your plebes for a support team. I get paid 5 times more than them and that is only because I know what I am talking about. The problem is not my side of the house but yours. I will throw rocks at your glass house when mine is comprised of bricks.

The paying customer wants a fix, set up a FTP so we can download the patches manually. This steam client is tearing my last nerve from my frustrated body.

I just wanted to come home from a long week of work and play a new video game. Instead I get to deal with incompetency which is plain unacceptable!!!

Don't ask me if my ports are forwarded, don't ask me if my PC is good enough, don't ask me to reboot or reinstall, don't ask me to plug directly into the ISP, . Tell me why your side of the house is so fracked up? I am not the only customer with this issue. To all the steam fanboi's, think before you respond here: Don't say "it works for me!" You probably had it installed and patched before steam started having this issue. /sad_panda_face

I have to stop typing now. I am getting more irate at this point and must go self medicate or something to save the last ounce of sanity left in my cranium.

Have a rice day!

no it doesn't.  Wille E. Coyote wouldn't sit there getting angry, he'd get even by dropping a large boulder on his problem, or set up some elaborate trap that has a high probablility of backfire.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

so much anger, from so little of a problem. its just a video game and it worth like $50, you dont have the right to insult or get mad to them just like that. youre a paying customer, i know that but that doesnt mean that you own those people's souls for you to say or do anything you wish. youre 30, act like one.

what, 30 year old people cant get angry over a product they buy and are dissatisfied with? When do people lose their anger? after 21 or 25?

@OP: i never use steam and i stay away from it as well.

I am just wondering what the response was from Steam support after you send them this mail directed to THEM?, not really sure why this type of complaint finds a place on a public forum as I don't think any of us posters can do anything about your issue.

Myself, have steam, never have run into problems downloading, or installing. And I am not even a Senior Network Architect.

Steam servers were undergoing scheduled maintenance today.

I generally get 1MB/s downloads from their servers.

I'm sorry that you're such a little child about something so insignificant that you had to throw your obviously oversized ego about on a public forum.

Steam Is one of the greatest tools on my computer. I have 70 games atm on steam and plan to breat a hundred before the end of the year. Go Steam Go

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Lol from my experience federal government techs aren't worth much.

But ive never dealt with any of the senior techs.

I gave up on steam way before orange box, it is the most frustrating program in existance in some ways, but valve does not care because they think the quality of their games makes up fo the magnificent virus known as steam

I actually like Steam, and I'm anti any kind of DRM.

I've never had any issues with it, on multiple PC's.

Downloaded Episodes 1, 2 and Portal and a few demos from Steam without a hitch.   You want problems?  Go try downloading something from Games for WIndow Live.  The hoops you have to go through just to open ports, uninstall any firewalls you have and crap is beyond annoying.  Never had problems downloading anything from anywhere, yet MS can't even accomplish the most basic of things.  Still can't get Fallout3 or Gears of War  to recognize any of my acheivements.  Oh well.  I may just have to torrent operation Anchorage just to be able to play it even though I'm totally willing to pay for it later when they get their act together.

I agree 100% thats why i refuse to buy valve steam related games if i have to deal with steam only it sucks:(

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

The humorous part about this issue is that the guy who makes 5 times more than developers that make a fairly significant amount (Steam we are talking about here...) complains he lost 50$.  50 insignificant dollars, which by all means of his income (I am guessing it is around something like 200k?) is made back in less than an hour.

I make almost nothing compared to that, and yet, I don't even freak out over waiting for a game to be downloaded.

Moral of the story?  Like another poster mentioned, patience.....patience.  By 30, you should definitely have it.

My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.

  • SithosSithos Member UncommonPosts: 315

Nice rant until you got to the "I make 5x more" part then I tuned you out. Thats like someone telling a cop that "I make more in a month than you do in a year" As soon as you typed that you have lost any shred of credibility. At that point you became a whiny "rich" guy (as compared to the "plebes" as you put it). As we all know the best way to get customer service for a problem is to insult frontline support...

  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

Why should frontline support get away with it.

They take their share of your money for a service they can't provide.

I'm sure angry customers would all prefer to take it out on the CEO if "frontline support" was willing to route their calls.

Meantime frontline support take the dollar. They sign up to represent a company that fails. They are part of the machine and they deserve to be treated as such.

Don't bash people because of their pay. That are PAYED to ask your those exact questions, because believe or not, but the average steam user isn't a Senior Network Security guy. I myself study IT-engineering, but I don't exactly get offended when people suggest obvious things.

That said, yes. It should just work. There shouldn't be any problems, and you are indeed right in your case, that they've provided a lackluster service. But the busy server should go away by itself, as it is a problem on their side.

So have a beer wait an hour and try again.

Well, Steam randomly assigns connections to a number of different download servers.  A lot of people get terrible download speeds (or nothing at all) with some of them.  Everybody has had this problem at times.  You essentially have to try again later, or you can simply force the issue and roll the dice on getting a better one now, using a tool I know you have on your HDD.  Unless the issue was server maintenance, like another person mentioned.  If none of that worked, meh.

Anyhow, I only really use Steam for Valve's games or for nice promotions.  Otherwise I just buy a box.  I like Steam, relatively speaking, but that's because Steam, despite its issues, works far better than the terrible alternatives (EA and Blizzard's proprietary online stores are nightmares).

Overall, you need to relax, OP.  I appreciate the fact that having technical issues as somebody whose ego is built on their technical prowess is a traumatic and potentially damaging experience, but you might have more sanity left in your cranium if you'd get rid of some of the self-importance that is displacing it.  Maybe replace it with a little perspective while you're at it.
