I played UO back in the 2000-2004/2005 time frame. So, I wasn't one of those pre tram vets who desperately miss the PvP or anything. Still, I loved UO and had several great years of enjoyment playing in Tram.
I stopped playing UO when SWG came out. After SWG's "new game" fiasco, I wandered for a bit. Then I started with Vanguard and played that for a little over a year. After that I wandered some more including playing EVE most recently.
I started getting some e-mails recently from MMORPG.com about some ultima training guides and I decided to take a peak.
I was tempted enough to download the KR client with 14-day trial and start playing last weekend.
I picked to start out on the Europa shard as I remember some old guildies had migrated to Europa from Great Lakes where I played before.
So, far I am enjoying it. It brings back a lot of good memories. I started a mage-scribe in New Haven and have been working him a little each night. I hit the Moonglow cemetery last night and blade spirited and lightning'd those undead for quite some time... reminds me of old times as I started out in Moonglow and spent many hours in that cemetery both training my characters as well as helping other new players.
My biggest gripes right now are these:
1) Since I am in the South East USA, Europa can be a bit dead when I am logged on in the evenings. That was to be expected I guess, given the time difference. I just don't know how much that is going to impact my ability to play, train, find a guild that I can participate in, etc. I may have to start a character on Great Lakes, or Legends, or somewhere else so that I can find enough other players on at the same time I am.
2) It just absolutely kills me that Luna has become what West Brit was back when I played. I have checked out most of the cities in Trammel and Malas now and the only one with players in them is Luna. Moonglow is deserted. Brit dead. Trinsic empty. etc. I really wish the Devs would have kept those cities thriving with players somehow. Luna just isn't the same even if the players are doing basically the same thing they did at West Brit and Moonglow and Trinsic.
The KR client works ok for me. I have a 2 year old computer that I bought to play VG on. Dunno how much that matters or not. I haven't mastered all the UI yet. In fact I haven't even set up any macros or anything yet. The most I have done is move my spells to the quick bar.
The graphics are much better than the old 2D graphics, but you know what... I'd go back to the 2D graphics if it came along with the old cities being hubs for player activity.
I'll probably stick with UO for awhile (already plan to cancel my EVE account next week)... just dunno what shard I'll be on.
If there are any other UO vets, or even just those curious about UO, I'd give it a shot. It is at least as fun as the other MMOs that I've tried.
Playing WoT now.

I played UO oh...10 years ago I really did enjoy the game, but I stopped playing when Everquest was released. I have alot of fond memories of the old days though in UO.
I remember my mom looking over my shoulder while I sat in town and dropped these explosive boxes...it never took long before somebody got greedy and grabbed it.
BOOOOOOM!!! lol My mom would laugh her ass off every time somebody got blown up and people came running to loot the poor saps gear. Then they made it so you went red and turned PK or something...they ruined all my fun. hehe
Atlantic is still one of the most populated servers if you are looking for a more active server.
As for people sitting in Luna instead of Brit selling and buying, this is a recent occurance on Atlantic. I believe this started with the Crimson Dragon Invasions as Brit was one of the cities which this took place. Suddenly bank sitters could be in grave danger, so the Luna bank seemed like the safest place to transact business as its also a very busy city.
Anyway, welcome back to UO. People returning to play Ultima again ( I also being one) after being a way for a while always reminds me that Disney Song "The Circle of Life." MMO gaming started with UO and always ends up returning to UO.
Been back now for just under 3 weeks and am loving it. I've been focusing most of my game time on a mage/scribe on Europa. I have gm'd the easy ones - med, resist, focus. In the 80s on magery and eval. In the 70s on inscription. Not sure what my 7th skill will be yet. I guess I could also drop focus on pick up something... dunno if that's a good idea or not though.
I have two other characters I play some. Both are mage/bards (at least right now). One on Europa and my backup on Great Lakes. Barding is soooo slow. No wonder I didnt have a bard when I played before!
Been hunting in despise mainly. Trying to save up enough gold for a house. Have about 100k right now, so a little ways to go still. Want to open up a small vendor shop too. I found that my old villa spot is open on both Europa and Great Lakes, so I may take that spot back again. The old school home designs remind me of the good old days, so I will probably stick with those for the near term. When I left, I had a custom 18x18 just south of luna. [Update: I bought a custom house plot in the same place my old villa was (different shard tho as I played on GL before). I think it is a 13x14 maybe. Anyways, bigger than a villa. Not enough money to build anything on the plot yet, but at least I have it! Just set some secure containers down on the dirt for use as extra storage.]
[Edit: BTW, what happened to the arena that used to be south of Luna? It's not there anymore... at least on Europa I can't find it. Nevermind. Found it. I must have been out the East side of Luna... must have been late one night and tired when I looked for the arena.]
Only a couple of bad experiences so far. The first was a scammer trying to dupe newbs out of 600 gold each and/or lure them through a red Fel gate to PK them. Didn't fall for it, but just bad that within my first week back and this moronic stuff shows up. The other experience was dieing twice at the Magincia moongate. When I last played Magincia was safe if I remember right... not sure what all the red magic casters that lay in wait of newbs are all about.
Anyways, like I said... having a lot of fun so far. Glad to be back.

I need a new MMO world to call home as Tom Chilton keeps destroying them
What are you char names back when you played before? Magencia had an invasion a while back and it was destroyed so there are alot of mobs there.
