Anyone know what's up with Joaquin Phoenix?

After his notorious appearance on David Letterman last night, a lot of people are asking, "What's going on?" I heard a Hollywood reporter speculate on several different possibilities. It could be that Phoenix is having some kind of nervous or mental breakdown and is starting to go Britney Spears on everyone. Or maybe he's shooting too much acid which is impairing his judgement. Some people are wondering if this might just be a publicity stunt and when the gag is over, he's going to go on another show and shout, "You've been punk'd!" The least likely of possibilities is that he's doing what he claims to be really doing which is becoming a rap musician. What do you think? Let's put it to a poll.

LOL that was hilarious. I think joaquin was just on some acid or something, lol either that or he is a better actor then everyone thinks he is.

There was a similar incident when Walk the Line was released, wasn't there? I seem to remember a clip of him asking an interviewer if there were bugs crawling out of his hair...or something like that. It was hilarious, just a totally random statement, with complete sincerity. Of course, he is a fantastic actor, so he could have been full of shit in both situations.
I'm not sure what to think here but I can honestly say I am somewhat weirded out after watching his rap performance. I'd really like to know if this is a big joke or if he has flipped his lid.
I think his brother died or someone close in relation some time ago. I'm a bit sketchy on remembrance.
Anyway I think the tragedy of the death has pushed him into tragedy. I honestly hope he recovers.

It was his brother, River. He died of a drug overdose back in 1993. Joaquin was just a kid and River was starting to emerge as a pretty big star.
I think Maya Angelou was responsible for naming the Phoenix kids. The River, the Rain and the Joaquin.

Yea. You can either put a a piece of blotter paper/windowpane acid on your tongue and let it disolve, or you can techincally shoot it. Intramuscular not Intravenous though, but that is rarely done.

His brother just died. And he was forced into the interview being told either do the interview or loose all future contracts. He was sick with grief but had to do it anyways. David letterman is a peice of crap dick head who should be hung to death. Then again, thats just my opinion.

While it could be a "stunt", I've seen this sort of thing with too many people I've known.
He's not a very happy guy. He's never really liked acting or the phony hollywood thing. He reluctantly got into it when he was younger. Now that he's 34, he's sort of trapped in it. As long as he stays away from the hard stuff, he'll come around like Mickey Rourke did..

At the end you hear Dave tell him good job just before his mic is cut and Phoenix takes off his glasses and gets more lively than he was the entire interview.

It is a joke. He is acting. Here (at 1:27) he is describing how he gets into character. Here at 47 seconds his friend talks about his retirement for a few seconds after Joaquin walks away. The friend seems suspicious, like it was all planned, he had a set of things he had to make sure to say.
