I was thinking of returning and had a few questions 1.Is the lag fixed? 2.How about the animations? 3.What is the population around on the servers?
1. Not really, no.
2. No, they're still just as terrible as before.
3. Well, with 450.000 people lost in 3-4 months, a lot more need to be merged.
Agree on that neller.
As for: #3 I think that the horrible chat system made it feel like an empty singleplayer game in the beginning, the heavy lost of subsribers makes it feel even worse and empty nowadays!
The game is fading. The merged servers seem to have fairly solid populations and Mythic is adding some good stuff, but the flaws have turned off a number of people who bought and tried the game.
Lag is better (I never had a problem except for large scale PvP, which has improved). I never thought the animations were bad, per se, but some are iffy and no, those have not been improved that I can tell.
Everyone has different likes and dislikes, but for me a few negatives have worn on my as time has gone on. I hate the lack of resource gathering and meaningful crafting. I hate the Tiered and segregated map design. (Yes, it may be in some ways "more realistic" than WoW's quilt work zone layout, but large, contigous continents with out zone loads between turn out to be a lot more conducive to bringing a virtual world to life). I also hate the lack of visual variety and stat choices for armors and weapons. (I actually prefer the mix and match model to the "each class has a unique look" design approach).
Oh. I also think this game is further proof that MMORPGs should NOT be based on licensed material unless the developers are allowed complete lattitude in reinventing the license anyway they see fit. WAR, LotRO, AoC and SWG all have exhibited success crippling flaws as a result of design limitations required by the license. (Not that all, or even most, of the flaws can be blamed on this).

Sorry but I have to disagree with this the problems WAR have are next to do with the licence if anything they haven't used the licence to it's full potential. The problems WAR are faceing now are purely down to poor game design which Mythic have no one but themselfs to blame.
I was thinking of returning and had a few questions 1.Is the lag fixed? 2.How about the animations? 3.What is the population around on the servers?
1. Performance has improved significantly, but still isn't perfect in really large scale battles (though it is a lot better in those circumstances as well).
2. Some improvements with the animations have been made (look better, sync better with abilities timewise, etc). Some improvements could still be made, but they are overblown as being a "problem".
3. As stated before, there are several servers NA side that have high populations (i.e. Dark Crag, Skull Throne, Phoenix Throne, Badlands). Many others that have good populations.
1. I used to have a fair amount of lag on my old rig, but since I finally allowed it to retire & upgraded I barely have any lag at all even at high settings. There are still occasional issues relating to certain spell super sparkly effects in RvR & Scenarios, but even these can be minimised by customising the settings.
2. Never had much of a problem with the animations. They aren't exactly the most impressive I've seen, but they aren't that bad either & I don't experience any bugs. I did have an infrequent glitch the other night where my mount occasionally seemed to be sliding around on it's arse, but that seems to have been a one-off.
3. I play on a Med/Med EU server & that seems to work pretty well. There is usually some RvR going on, but obviously not in every realm & every Tier 24/7, so if I want to join in it's usually just a short flight away. I have no problems getting into scenarios & they usually pop within ten minutes, often within ten seconds.
Obviously the game isn't to everyone's tastes, but as long as you pick a reasonably populated server there should be enough other players that enjoy it immensely for you to potentially do the same. I am currently enjoying WAR very much, but it is just a game not a religion. I don't understand the people that are obsessed with either loving or hating something, games are just entertainment commodities. If you feel like returning, try it for a month & see how you feel.
If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
I was thinking of returning and had a few questions 1.Is the lag fixed? 2.How about the animations? 3.What is the population around on the servers?
I just came back after a few months hiatus (recieved a 7-day Buddy pass) to see how the game was doing, and I found it to have some positive improvements while still containing some negative issues. To quickly answer your questions though.. 1. I have had no lag problems at all but one disconnect from the server. Nor did I really experience too much graphic lag. 2. I am unsure of what your question specifically is aiming at, I always thought the animations were fine for the most part. If you mean the animations sometimes sticking in place and whatnot though then yes that still occurs. 3. From what I hear Dark Crag is the most populated ORvR server. This is where I started (40 Magus) although now I play Order. I can tell you that Dark Crag is highly active all around since my playtime is around midnight to 2pm the next day. Scenarios still popped in t1 and t2 very quickly if not instantly and the RvR lakes are always shifting sides and being fought over.
Now the big positives for me.
Itemization - The items have added flavor now with some of them actually having abilities on them. For example I picked up an RvR influence reward (RvR lakes now have an influence rewards system with very nice items to choose from) that had an ability called Pain III, which had a % chance to reflect X damage over X seconds to attacker. I have noticed some new graphic additions to items also, but only to high rank characters. Getting Purples and set items seems far easier to access now, and player looting in RvR is seemingly fixed.
Live Events - The Night of Murder event just ended yesterday, but I was able to complete it on one of my characters before it ended. I have to say I like these and I hope these events keep rolling out for the rest of this games life. This was much needed to the staleness of the world environment as a whole.
Knight of the Blazing Sun - This was my primary reason of coming back to the game to check it out, as this was my initial choice of career before the game launched. I have to say I am pleased with the class in its appearance and playstyle which is similar to Chosen, but the auras and abilities of the KotBS are very pleasing. I managed to reach rank 22/21 before the 7-day pass expired today.
Some negatives -
Still alot of bugs and problems that can be annoying at times. I am no technical wizard so maybe someone might have an answer to this, but why do all the spell effects and quest icons above npc heads disappear at random sometimes when I alt-tab? I have the same PC as before in beta, and I don't remember this one.
Still some scenario issues where people can exploit, I.E. Phoenix Gate - for some reason they still leave a gap for Destruction players to hide behind their tower with the order flag, but Orders side has no such place to get behind there, on top of that Destruction has an exploit on their side which enables them to get back up into their spawn with the flag/ or on top of a really high mountain peak. I played in maybe 50 Phoenix Gate scenarios and this only happened once so it could of just been a cheating Witch Elf
The animation sticking issue I mentioned before is somewhat annoying.
Healing is still overpowered, making Warrior Priests and Disciples of Khaine and other healers godly hard to kill. This is changing in the upcoming patch though rolling out next week I believe. They basically switched one of their HoTs to a more direct heal, making HoT spam spread healing less effective I am guessing.
I also made a Warrior Priest during the 7-day pass and got him to rank 16/15 and the fact that I could solo two rank 17s or two+ just isnt right, especially if they are melee dps. On another positive note, it seems like renown gain from healers isn't ginormous and exploitable anymore either.
So is it worth coming back? For me it is and I plan on subscribing again. Especially for the Slayer and more additions to ORvR and Darkness Falls-like dungeon in the works.

Pretty much what was said above. I'm on Monolith (US) and there's been some good RvR action going on.
I will admit that internally the game has improved. However that is if you can play or even login. The amount of problems with the patcher/loader is just rediculous. HTTP issues, file manifest issues, patching issues, authentication failed issue, crashing at/after character select, and the constant just plain not connecting. So far after every patch and hot fix (except the very first time i played) I have had to reinstall the game. Customer support has never once given me answer to any of my queries (they have reply'd but never solved an issue). And the final kicker, have you ever tried to reinstall this game if you purchased it via EA store digital download....good luck.
Now I will say I realy like the game play and the internals of it. But any bugs in the game matter little if you can not even login.

I'v NEVER had any problem with the patcher... I played since day one.
Well I wish I had your install then. I have had only problems with it, and on a side note I never had any real problems with the game . Once (ahh I remeber the days) when I could login I never had a DC or CTD but alas I dont even get that privlage any more.

1. It has improved, but it's not completely gone.
2. same. Only animations I have a problem with are elves and dwarves...but if that's really a deal breaker for you...
3.There are about 6-7 decently populated servers NA side...I don't know about EU though.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!

1. Somewhat, but changing between regions is horrible.
2. There are animations in WAR? I thought that was my old CRT Monitor acting up and getting ready to go out.
3. Sadly low. I work 2nd shift EST and both sides end up going to bed when their mommies call them at 9 PM Or so.
1. Most of it IMO
2. No the animations are still a bit poo
3. On the EU side of things we have a few high pop destro servers with the highest pop order server being on eltharion which is high destro.

Bugs are better but not eradicated
Animations are better
Population has stabalized to 200kish. Servers merged and several enjoy very intense oRvR (Praag)
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
1. Better but still needs work
2. Didn't know they were broken, but some bugs have supposedly been fixed. Seems OK to me.
3. Some servers are busy, and some are dead. Busy server = fun game. Slow server = not so fun. Choose wisely, grasshopper.
