Will Earthrise be a good change from the current MMO's on the market?

Will Earthrise be a solid game based on the features they mention on their site? I personally like the sci-fi genre, I was sad that matrix and SWG didnt pan out. I also like the skill based system which they will have in Earthrise. From what i have read it seems this game isnt a mainstream MMO and seems to be somewhat a sandbox game. Do you feel this game will be a breathe of fresh air in the MMO market? Discuss among yourselves what you might think how it will fair.

I don't think it will do very well, it will be like a FPS more than anything with some skill ups and achievements  by the sounds of things.

I do not project earthrise to do GREAT or get the numbers a mainstream game get. I see an EvE like sub. Where it steadly grew as the game improves and get more known. I am positive it will do good tho and be very much new and fresh for the Sci-fi genre. They are thinking realistic and making the game rpg/fps. I think it will be a nice change from the current MMO's out on the market. The market is saturated with fantasy MMO's. We need an other good Sci-fi MMO! Also there is not enough of skill based/sandbox mmo's out there also. So it will be a nice change.

I dont know why but it reminds me of Tabula Rasa for some reason... Shooter/Sci-fi/RPG...hopefully it will do better than Tabula Rasa in the long run, I have hopes it will last a good while.

From what little has really surfaced and been confirmed it almost feels like a two times speed, more structured, planet based EVE, minus player corps, add npc factions.  Not the least appealing idea ever if the fact sheets are to be believed at all. The chance to frag someone in a mechnaised suite ala Planetside has me salivating a bit. Time will tell, sooner or later, time will tell.

I'm hoping it sort of turns out to have similiar gameplay freedom as EvE. Provide the players with the tools and let us fight it out how we see fit. And if gets close to EvE's subs it will be a success.

Lots of what they are aiming for seems great on paper (territorial control/battles, skill based, indepth crafting) but it all depends if they can pull it off. I for one am hoping they do.

This game will be fresh of breath air for the MMO industry. There are way too many fantasy mmo's out there and for once someone was thnking outside the box.

We need alot more non fantasy mmo's. I so looking forward top this game.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
    Playing EVE Online and AOC.
    Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

It could fill a niche if it is solid and grow into something great.  I am really excited about it though.  I can't wait to see how it goes this year for Masthead.

For a start i think this game is bringing a new setting to the MMO scene because although it is classed as sci fi i cant ever remember seeing this post apocalyptic setting ever used before. I think the games success will pan out to how it compares to FE because the 2 are very similar and FE doesnt have the FFA PvP and full player looting earthrise has which could make it appeal to a larger audience, but i do hope this game succeeds.

None of the announced features is really new.

    • Skill system and crafting will probably similar to EvE
    • Neocron had a sort-of-FPS aiming system before
    • there were a few sandbox style games before Earthrise.

But Earthrise could be successful by being the first game that gets this mix of features right. Neocron was full of bugs, even years after release. EvE is great in many ways, but the click&point control is annoying me enough that I want to try something else (Jump Gate Evolution, Earthrise and Fallen Earth are on my watch list). And if you believe the disappointed fans, SWG was great for a while but got ruined by SOE management.

So it is more a question of "is it done well" than a question of "is it new"

I can't say about the crafting, but the skill system looks nothing like Eve. Eve's system was this: buy  the book for the skill, turn it on(you could only have one active at a time). Each skill had 5 levels, each taking more real life time to complete. In Earthrise, you actually have to fight stuff to raise your skills.

Perhaps each feature individually is nothing too new, but then it's hard for any game these days to really claim a completely new feature. The combination of fps-like targetting, with open pvp, territory control, and pvp looting is pretty different than whats out there.

Personally I know that myself and a few friends are waiting on this game with high hopes.

Everything so far that they've announced seems perfect, a complex crafting system, partial item loss on death, pvp, pve, factions, smuggling, mechs, it seems like it has the potential, and the guys behind it are looking as though they want to stay true to the ideas that they're throwing into the community.

On the subject of will it be a good change? Yes, I believe so, the crafting system alone seems like that, the only system I've experienced that seems anything like what they're planning is Auto Assaults and that was dumbed down from what it originally was meant to be. Sci-Fi MMO's (Paid to play ones) Seem to be few and fair between compared to the fantasy ones we have today, I personally can't wait, a game that involves risk and reward, where pvp has consequences, and you have more chance of remembering those you fight against unlike some games today.

In my opinion Earthrise is a good change for the MMO market. First off because of the genre they decided to choose. Secondly the developers listen to their fanbase and provide feedback to all questions that are given toward them. Yes we can sit here and debate it looks good on paper, how will it do once its out?...etc, etc. But the point of this discussion is not about the real world application yet, its really about how it looks on paper at the moment. And as far as what im seeing all the concepts are solid and what people have been asking, for years. Most people will complain that the idea's for the game aren't brand spanking new (ex: show me something i've never heard of before), but guess what most idea's in the world aren't. Ideas are refined over time. If we took the lightbulb for instance its been refined over time.

We still use it for a source of light but have refined to the point were we can use that same light as a laser for medical tools, machinery, laser televisions, etc. The idea's Mastahead  presents for their game earthrise are ideas that are hardly used in the market and they have refined them with their own spin on it. Not everything they present needs to be refined but as long as they are using the base ideas that gamers have asked for and truely implement them to the best of their ability, earthrise will definately be a good change that we can all look forward to.

Don't forget Shadow, that it's also their IP, it's not some MMO based on an already existing world, they get to shape it how they want, they get to decide how they want it to go, rather then most of the MMO's out there that/coming out that are build on already existing IP's and as such have to deal with the fanboi's who complain when even the slightest thing is out of sync with how they perceive things to be.

So not only did they get to choose the genre, but they have free reign over every other choice they want to make, with no limitations due to already existing rules and information about the world that they are working upon. which means they can make sure that when their game does hit the market, it's not a carbon copy of anything else out there, it can be fresh, clean and very much a push in the right direction.
