Was in beta for a bit, I enjoyed it but I hate playing a game when my character is going to get wiped eventually anyways..
Now that I actually care about this game and care about advancing in it I thought id give my review of my first few hours in it..
It is the best MMORPG out right now, the game still has its problems, sound and animation being my two biggest problems with the game, the sounds in this game are pathetic, there sound guy seriously needs to be fired. Animation is disgusting, really blocky and slow.. again, a 12 year old could have done better with the same tools.
However the game does have the basics down for an amazing game if they can fix the smaller problems, this is by far not the worst release ever, This was NOT a controlled release and it was a European uncontrolled release at that, judge it for what it was.. the game runs better now then most games do 5 months after their controlled release, I have yet to crash once in beta and release.
A word of advice when you guys !finally! do get into the game, Don't judge the game on your first few minutes in it, when you first get in the game it will take a few minutes for your eyes to get use to something new like this, then your brain needs to get use to the fact that their isn't guards with a "!" above their heads telling you what to do.
If you just get into the game and go running into the wilderness you will get frustrated and confused, your best bet is to go get the nearest goblin quest (usually a merchant closest to starting area gives it,) then go kill some goblins, get some armor and weapons on your back, sell whats left, and bank the gold you receive. This is a PvP game, people will want to kill you though, so really watch your ass for some white/red conned players.
People will try to jump in front of you while you are attacking goblins, hoping that you will hit them and go white/red conned to them so they can kill you without penalty.. there is no system to save you from this, get people together in the area to kill this guy with you, chances are they want him dead too.
That is really the best kind of starter review I can give of this game.. Honestly though, throw every idea of an MMORPG out the window when you play this game, this is not a MMORPG in the traditional EQ/WoW sence, your main goal in this game will be to meet allys, kill enemies and try to stay alive. Some people don't like that, if you don't.. this is not the games fault. All games have their problems, obviously a game made by a Multi Million dollar company will have less, give the game a chance and stop harping on the small companies because they get a few things wrong..
In the end, I have my problems with the game but looking ahead I can see this game being the best thing that has happend to MMORPGs in a long time, I have not felt this way in a game since Everquest 10 years ago, the possiblities of this game are endless. Hate it or love it this game did nothing but good for this ageing genre.

Well said, mah man. It's just like UO, you run around and attack shit, gain items, and wander the world with no one to guide you. There is no crutch here guys.
Let's steer away from the MMOs where someone or some npc has to hold your hand to the next zone or area to level up. This is a game for people with a mind of their own
Hopefully we can work through all of the shortcomings of release and get down to business
nice post, I have the same general view of darkfall. its imperfect but its the only game like it out. you gotta admit aventurine are failing pretty epically tho atm, theres no excuse and i'm tired of theirs and their pets fanboys.
My blog:
That's the thing,
Aventurine is a company, think of Mcdonalds as Blizzard, then think of your Localy owned Pizza joint that owns a single store in your area.
Now think of that Pizza joint creating an amazing new pizza that everyone around the world wants to try, thousands of people want that pizza. How does this pizza join deal with the demand? make more pizza right? sure.. but first they need the money to buy the extra ingrediants and hire more employees.. they need that first wave of income to deal with the HUGE flow of demand comming in.
Aventurine simply needs time and resources to deal with this problem. It won't be fixed in the first month.
But try telling that to a bunch of spoiled nerds that cannot get into their game that they payed a lousy 50 bucks for.
Nice review of first 10min and over see the many faults this game have lol.
BEST GAME EVER omg how come people are so dishonest and say things they can't even show with hard facts.

This isn't a review of my first 10 minutes, Ive played over 50 hours of this game in beta.
I have been in 50v50 battles, seen the problems with this game.. I can list of a hundred problems with this game, but I can list off a thousand possiblies.
What I got in Everquest was because it was my first MMORPG.. that is like comparing your first time having sex to your 20th time having sex, that is clearly pointless.. However, for the first time I feal like I did in Everquest.. that is all I said. But yes, this is the best thing to come to MMORPGs since Everquest/UO/Daoc/WWIIonline and Eve.
I have to say, this review did a great job of highlighting some of the worst aspects of DF, especially the part about people jumping in front of you to try and con you into hitting them.
And you call this freedom? Freedom to exploit game mechanics (how about that macro skill leveling) is what you all were really looking for?
I'm all for FFA PVP, but make it truly FFA.... let people kill whomever with no artificial penalties.

It was more then 7 years and all games including World of Warcraft have a 7+ year development period, I have been watching this game since 2002.
Darkfall simply announced their development to early.
I completely agree..
And the Laser towers, and hovering tanks are pathetic too.. But we are pointing out things a small company did wrong, it does not change the HUGE things that it did right. Like I said, i'm unbias, part of me hates this game, but there are things that cannot be ignored that they did very well.
The things they did right in this game are not hard to do though, Blizzard could turn around and do the same thing and make a game 10 times better.. But that is talk.. when blizzard does that, I will be there first.
Lets hope Aventurine takes the money we are giving them and makes this game the Multi million dollar game it deserves to be.

pretty true -- small companies have to be innovative to have a chance (also true for Funcom, whose "marketing lies" have not been worse than Aventurines btw) and big companies usually take the proven fun part from these games and polish them up ...
Thus ... kudos to all you guys who enjoy Darkfall and stick with it (at least for a while) -- Aventurine may grow and maybe their next game will be much more polished
Sweet; my first post on these forums!
I followed the "progres" of this release since midnight of the 24th.
I have never seen so much hate and flames in my life and was even a bit shocked about the way many people communicated their opinions. Why are you so upset? It's just a game, maybe it will rule, maybe not. Maybe another game will be based on it and be very succesfull while this remains mediocre.
The point is; a group of guys (prolly not unlike most of us) worked their arse off for many years without backing of big money. That's a risk and an investement of time. They did this to get a paycheck and hopefully become rich but alsoto MAKE A GAME, for US! That alone is reason to support them instead of being smug on a thread and later being able to say"told ya it would fail".
Every guy that makes a pc game is ok in my book since i like much variety in my hobby. I won't play em all of course but I see no reason to become a dick about the ones that I don't like or those that fail. Because it's a sad thing to see something that was meant to be so much fun bleed out for lack of interest.
I've played many games. But lately I've been hungry for something new and this just might be it, by the sound of it! So take your time guys, make the thing work proper. If I don't like it or something much better comes along; I'll be off...
So for the people who really mean their flames; inhale, be cool. Put that rage into finding good games and advertise them to others. Or, even better; make a game yourself.
And to the people who don't care about the game but put flames here to see other peoples emotional reactions; you have better things to do, you know you do.
Nice post btw op
I'm in fear of the the bad animation you mention and hope the gameplay will make that problem insignificant.
It's time we stop taking quests and start making our own stories, with friends and guilds. (cue epic music)

Don't worry about animations. That's the last thing you will be looking at in wildrnes with so many pk around^^
good and informative
It is hard to tell if a man is telling the truth when you know you would lie if you were in his place
The more I hear about this game the more I want to play.. opinions are split 50/50, which is a good sign as all the kiddies are gona be against anything short of spooning these days.
Im guessing DF really is that harsh MMO world I have been looking for, GFX dont matter to me as I play WW2Online and think its awsome purley because of gameplay, I love DF colours Tho.
this is a really good thread that shouldn't be buried so quickly

I worked for my lousy 50 bucks thank you.
too much ADD in this forum for people to read all this text
Funny how logical and informative posts ALWAYS get buried beneath troll shit.
OP, I agree with you like others do. I played beta for 3 weeks, and enjoyed every second of it. I didn't make it trying to pre-order, unfortunately.
Some notes of my own.
If someone's trying to jump into you attacks to turn you gray, back off a little and time your swings at safe times, or completely. Run around the guy, the MOB sometimes will switch targets to another person who's close by. If that happens and he fights it, do the same thing to him.
What's really nice about this game, as far as PKers go, is that stamina is so important. If they run too low, they are at risk if more blues come by. Make them use stamina with sprints and blowing stamina on ranged attacks while they chase you. They might get you and get away, or they might get you but have others come along who get them, or they might give up the chase to avoid the risk.
Also, there's no power levelled gods who are going to one hit you. Maybe after someone builds up to extreme skills on a brand new newb, but I ahven't seen it at the end of beta.
Getting flagged as a red murderer does make life tough on them. They can get around it with help from friends, but it's still a hassle. This will reduce it from "rampant".
I noted several players come in thinking they were going to PK, and change their tactics when they found out it isn't all that easy. I also noticed that the majority of players were pretty decent people to play with, even being complete strangers.
Allot of this will certainly change once the world gets filled in with masses of players. The numbers will change the way things go as PKers group up in larger numbers. But the blues seem more ready to fight back, and to fight smarter, to me.
All in all, I think it's going to be quite a social experiment, much like EVE has been.
And as Darkfall grows and fills in the game with all the things that they couldn't get in, it's going to be something. I do have quite a few concerns, like about everybody else. But overall, it's the experience I've been waiting for.
Once upon a time....

well said...and very good comparison. ya this company is in over their head atm...no doubt from what i've been hearing. but what they have is a very very interesting idea and as one who loves the "sandbox" type game and has experience in mmo's, it's worth giveing them a little slack. what's great aboutthem being small is that they don't need to cave to the market the way a bigger company HAS too. this company can can carve out a niche of loyal players and stay true to them. if it were a bigger company...then inevidably ifthe game does get going...it has the potential to be ruined by the "big thinkers" of the company to maximize every last profit. perfect example is what happened to Galaxies.
