Will Darkfall have safe zones?
There are no safe zones in Darkfall unless the players themselves create them or seek them out. There is no area where a player cannot be attacked by another player.
Towers are in game and are safe zones.
I don?t like PvP, why should I even consider trying out Darkfall?
If you give it a chance, you?ll discover that Darkfall is an extremely well rounded game. For example, there?s as much effort going into the quest engine and the crafting process, as there is going into the combat design. Darkfall features the ultimate player based economy, more useful trade skills than any other released MMORPG to date, advanced NPC and monster AI, and a quest engine constantly creating new and challenging content. Furthermore, the game world is huge; you could move to a remote area with your friends and try to create a safe haven for other like-minded players.
It's been said many times that pvp is the main focus of darkfall and everything else is wow carebear fluff. The crafting system is boring, the quest system sucks, and the ai is ridiculous.
How are you going to handle Player Killing?
Anyone can attack anyone. In fact Darkfall encourages you to seek out and kill enemies of your race and your clan. However, it is up to each kingdom to set the rules of their borders. The different kingdoms have NPC guards that have orders given to them by the player kings and lords. You can order the guards to attack on sight. The guard ?hit list? can include clan names, individual player names, specific races, alignments, and enemies.
NPC guards are in fact not in game, due to resource problems. What's gonna happen when a few thousand players log on? Oh wait...
How do spawns work? Are they static or dynamic?
Our random spawns are dynamic. Clear out a spawn and it will not reappear in the same place. If you spend enough time killing a species, its presence in that area will thin out and eventually the species will migrate to a different area.
Not sure about this one. Anyone?
What are the Prestige classes?
Prestige classes are special classes, like Paladin, Assassin, Gladiator, Enchanter etc. and it?s an optional path that you may choose for your character to follow.
Prestige classes were removed from the game.
Will there be player owned houses?
Players will be able to set up houses of various sizes and design, ranging from small cottages to huge castles and citadels.
Player houses were quietly removed from the game.
Can I design my own house?
Yes you can.
Read above point.
Why so many skills and spells?
We would like to make combat, spell casting, trading, and item creation as interesting as possible. Our goal is to promote more variety in combat and allow for a large number of possible combinations to be used in offense and in defense, rather than the same predictable routines being used over and over.
The bit about using the same routines over and over struck me as funny.
What types of items can I make?
You will be able to make almost every item found in the world like weapons, tools, armor, clothing, food, containers, furniture, jewelry etc.
Furniture?
What other options other than joining a Clan do I have?
You are only limited by your imagination in what else you can do, but here are some examples to get you going:
You could be a lone adventurer, hunting for treasure, magical items and fame, or a mercenary selling your services to the highest bidder. You may choose to play a merchant, setting up caravans and shops in different cities, buying high quality hides from Mahirim hunters and selling them for top prices at Human cities. You could hook up with a few friends and be pirates, sailing your galleon around, plundering merchant ships, or choose to play the Dwarven blacksmith, crafting mighty magical weapons and armor, or perhaps a farmer producing rare herbs and spell reagents. The possibilities are limitless.
Most of this is pretty ridiculous and obviously false, so I'm not going to elaborate.
How will trading work?
We have developed a pretty sophisticated trading system that brings buyers and sellers together easily, and it will work in, but also out of the game. There will be more on this at a later date.
Release is here and I've yet to see anything more than a basic crafting system. When is this later date? Expansion two years down the road?
Can I have pets or NPC hirelings in Darkfall?
You can have pets and NPC hirelings in Darkfall, ranging from tamed animals and monsters, to summoned skeletons, charmed animals and monsters, hired NPC merchants, hired NPC guards, etc.
100% False.
What can my NPC hirelings do?
NPC hirelings can follow you around and fight with you, they can carry your loot, they can perform skills and spells to aid you, etc. NPC hirelings can do pretty much everything that player friends can do. In addition, NPC hirelings can be given advanced orders such as patrolling your city, looking for enemies, criminals, and thieves. They can be a vendor in your shop that you have set up, they can mine for minerals in a mine, they can go out into the forest and chop wood for you, or stand on the banks of a river fishing for you all day.
Obviously, all false. Too bad they didn't implement this or so many ppl might not be macroing.
Will there be a community staff?
Yes, there are plans for community staff that will be in place for the game launch and it will be selected for the most part from the Darkfall Community Volunteers. The role of the community staff will be to provide customer support and in-game assistance.
Again, it's launch time. Where's this community staff?
How often can we expect announcements and updates to the site?
We will have regular news updates, screenshots, announcements, FAQ updates, downloads, and progress reports on the official Darkfall site.
This is on the site that still displays a beta signup.
Will there be a public beta test?
There will be a public beta test.
Fail.
A lot of you will begin crying that the site isn't updated and everyone knows that and should have been following the forums. Guys, most people won't check the forums before buying the game. Not everyone is as hardcore as you are. The fact is that this is the OFFICIAL site. If a site like mmorpg.com wanted to know what was up with some random MMO, where do you think they'd go to get a list of features and development status?
Darkfall has not lived up to its promises.
*edit*
Darkfall places no restrictions on player interaction, so there are no developer imposed safe zones, no realms, factions, PvP zones, or any other roadblocks that limit your game. Anyone can fight anyone, anywhere as long as they are willing to face the consequences - in the form of Darkfall?s alignment system.
Does anyone else see the hypocrisy in this statement? It definitely contradicts itself...
Also - yeah, I have a bit of free time today. And, I'm pissed that they left out a lot of the features that truly make it a SANDBOX, as everyone keeps claiming it is. Sue me for expecting what's advertised.
Comments
A quick addition for anyone who tries to tell me that it's okay if the site is incorrect because it hasn't been updated in a while.
darkfallonline.com/news/
Check out the news page of the main site. Looks like it was updated late Jan right before the "first wave" of beta.
Darkfall is another MMORPG. It's not the Second Coming. Just like all other MMORPGS, come launch time, it needs to cut the fat and work with what is realistic and doable FOR THE TIME BEING. It's obviously their good intentions that they wanted these features in the game, but they have to work with that they can realistically get out there now. Logically it stands to reason that since these were all original implementation ideas, they will be implemented during the lifetime of the game. This is in addition to stating the OBVIOUS, which is that every game evolves during its development and not everything that was originally planned becomes feasible. Considering how small a company they are and it being crunch time now, they didn't have time to update their website with what would more accurately reflect what was, what is, and what will be in the game. I understand you can complain that it's "false advertising," but do you seriously think that was their intention? People are always looking for an entity to spew their bile on and now people are taking it out on Darkfall. Brief amount of time will pass, though, and people will get over it, the game will be stabilised and everyone will consume milk and cookies. Chill out, mate.
Rofl, I've never seen such an ownage of their FAQ. I might just put this thread in the sig.
This was my favorite one:
"Why so many skills and spells?

Our goal is to promote more variety in combat and allow for a large number of possible combinations to be used in offense and in defense, rather than the same predictable routines being used over and over."
Also the part about being a 'lone adventurer or mercenary' in the same exact FAQ that says you can be attacked anywhere.

Just curious, not that I think it invalidates all your criticisms, but were you in beta?

You forgot to add the crappy all-seeing guard towers that zapped you until you got out of range and the grind-based and gear-based gameplay along with the fact that they haven't fixed mounts or bothered to fix the horrible weapon imbalance or put directional combat in properly.
Archery was actually pretty cool though, I was impressed they had proper gravity in it but thats about it, crafting is terrible since its just a pure gold-sink putting even WoW to shame.
Don't even get me started on the magic grind.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
There is a simple fact that cannot be disputed. There is NO EXCUSE for them not to have updated the main website. Absolutely none. You can keep repeating yourselves as much as you want by saying that they were busy building the game and not the website, but that argument just doesn't hold any water.
Be smart, just admit it. Just say, "yeah you're right. they fucked up on the web site, but these other parts of the game are good and that makes up for this problem". Don't be an ignorant fool and continue to lie to yourself and everyone else just to protect your ego and your own investment in the game.
Seriously you guys are retarded. I've been following and promoting darkfall more than most of you, for the past 5 years. I was smart enough to see REALITY and understand what's happening here. Hopefully you can too.
*edit*
Yes, I was in beta. My username at the Darkfall forums is Brett.
I, too, was impressed with archery. I want a sandbox MMO though, not a combat simulator with "full loot". Also, check out the first item I mentioned. Towers
Its simple, they dreamed up most of those features and ran into the common problem which was they could not put most of them in the game with the engine they built. DF is a skeleton that has 2 main things: the world to play in, and PvP. its sad really. LOL
Isn't this considered false advertisement?
Leaving this old outdated FAQ / Feature list of the game and taking orders?
Thanks, I'm still deciding on whether to buy the game so first hand experiences like this are helpful.

Funny thing is other MMOs have made promises that devs didnt keep either what makes this one so different?
what makes this game different? hmmm well those other games were promised to be content complete...they were, DF isnt. There are sooo much differences between other MMOs an DF that make DF more of a failure than most.
You know, I really wouldn't have minded any of that. Some things are just beyond their capability and budget, and that's understandable. What is not understandable is the lack of communication with the community about the removal of these features, and the lack of updating the main web site's list of key features to reflect these changes.
Luckily, I got a chance to check out beta and see firsthand that most of the features are missing and we're basically looking at a VERY BASIC RPG. Note that I don't say MMORPG. The features in this game could pretty much be replicated in a java game (lol wurm online actually has more features!). Not to bash java, btw, its a great platform. I use it for many UI elements on some sites i design, but it has no place in 3d game architecture.
So, I didn't pre-order, because I knew all of these features were missing, and the game really isn't a sandbox at all. There's no player choice when all of the players are forced to make the same choices in order to stay competitive.
Anyways, it just sucks for those of you who didn't get a chance to try it out in beta, and still paid for it, especially when the official FAQ said there will be an open beta.
What is it with mmo fans and 'promises?' I'm not defending Darkfall, its a mess, but no one at Aventurine or any other game company has 'promised' you anything. They laid out a set of features they intended to include. Some made it, some didn't, but nothing was promised. Welcome to software development, or prety much any creative endeavor in the history of man. Jeez, stop using the word 'promise,' it makes you all sound so utterly clueless about the way the world works.
What makes it different?
Because AV said their game was "FEATURE complete" in May of 2008.

The difference is that when I happened upon one of those other MMOs while browsing this site, and then went to their features list and bought the game, I actually saw all of those features in game.
As it stands, anyone who heads to darkfall's main site, reads the features, then orders the game, will be buying something that's different than was advertised to them.
Another Fail post is another Fail post. Look, if your not going to research MMO's it's probably best not to play them. Faq's are regularly outdated and fast. Not only that but what is initially planned to be in is never everything that will be in. Some things get cut, others get added. It's the nature of the beast. If you truly want to limit your dissapointment from an MMO, keep up to date on it. In this case you did not and it shows.
Edited to add: I too was in beta, my forum name is GrayGhost79 there.
So when are you quitting?
WoW nerds beware, I come equipped with lazers and anti-QQ missiles. If you mess with me, I will $%£@ you.

or they atleast gave a reason why X item/feature was not ingame at the time. they didnt just brush it under the rug pretending you didnt see it...

Then it would be false advertisement. That could mean massive law suites if people dont get there money back.
Some people rob you at gun point..Others will rob you at "Ball Point Pen"
They actually laid out a list of "key features", meaning the features that define the game and make it what it is. Most of the removed features were the very things that made Darkfall a sandbox. Without them, it's a glorified medieval combat simulator with magic elements.
Also, I never said anything about promises dude lol.. I don't think I've used that word once on these forums in any of my posts.
And there's a big difference between what you're alluding to, and what's actually happening. You make it sound like they listed all these features 5 years ago and slowly they got removed. This isn't the case. These features are still purported to be in the game, and they aren't. This is release man, it's time to be professional. We aren't in beta any more.
The stuff being complained about was removed long long ago and we were told they were. If you guys wish me to start posting Dev quotes and there sources I am more than willing since I have some time to kill. There is much of it to be found here, in the Dev journals, Interviews, and even posts they made on the Official forums. The official forums are down at the moment, atleast not accessible, so I can not grab those but there are plenty others quotes and sources readily avaliable.
When they said back in 08 december i imagine tasos claimed the game was launch ready and complete...that to me shows a little form of a promise.

The title of the thread is darkfall has not lived up to promises. That word has been thrown around by whiners numerous times in this thread, maybe not by you, but then that's probably why I didn't quote any of your posts or specifcally refer to you.
I was speaking generally.
Finally, I said nothing whatever about when they listed features, kindly stop putting words in my mouth. I'm disappointed in what was left out of the game, so much so that I will not be renewing when my free time is up, but I was not 'promised' anything by Aventurine, a fact that escapes many people here.

Lol, then you need to revisit your definition, and stop being so guilible that you actually believe what comes out of the mouth of a public relations guy like Tasos.
