So what's so great about the skill system, combat (and crafting)....?

I have read most of the launch day reviews, as well as some of the beta impressions, and I get that some people don't like the sandbox feel and they don't like the lack of NPC or PVE "content". That doesn't concern me, and I am honestly looking forward to that piece of it.

But one thing that is concering to me are the criticisms about the combat system and the "lack of depth" in the skill system. Also, to a lesser extent, the descriptions of the crafting system concern me. It sounds almost pathetic.

So.... Here's what I'm looking for.... UO 2.

I want varied and deep combat.

I want a skill system where there are almost infinite templates and configurations available. Obviously, "infinite" is somewhat of an exaggeration, but those that have played UO over the years will get what I mean.

I would like some crafting akin to UO as well. Actually, UO's modern crafting is better (imo) than old school, with the BOD books and etc..., but I'm not really expecting that. And crafting is a distant third priority.

So... to sum up?

Is this an overblown shallow FPS/MMO?

Or, is it a game with a deeply involved skill system, and multi-faceted combat system with lots of skills (and combos) to juggle?

    Its up to the player.

The combat system is a clickfest for some and very deep and varied for others. You have all the tools in front of you, and its up to you.

After all class based MMOs out there, the skill system is very nice to see. Dont bother to much with "templates" because its up to the player in the end.

Crafting is as in other mMOs, but with one major difference.....peope need your items. So you feel very important.

people keep mentioning there's a skill soft cap.... is the soft cap per skill, or an overall soft cap?

if it's an overall soft cap, i can see templates arising.  if it's a soft cap per skill, no templates.  but, the way i keep hearing people talk (on TS) and reading comments... it sounds like it's an overall softcap.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Softcap is just if you are an amazing magician, and stop using it often your skills will deteriorate as you 'forget' them.
