Of course it is not mendatory, just like it is not mandatory for me to play the game at all.
But as I tried to explain (apparently in vain) in my first post: for me to ENJOY the game, it was necessary and got too expensive. Not more than I can afford, but definitely more than I am willing to pay for a game. That is why I stopped paying and left the game.
Now if you enjoy the game without buying anything, that's great for you. In that case it sure is a bargain.
I did not like it *raw* so to speak and *spiced* I found it far too expensive. That was all I was saying.
Well, if it was something you felt you have to do in order to enjoy the game, then it was worth it...right? I personally only spent the free 50 diamonds from Frogster so far Initially I wanted to die my armor but after some more thinking I decided it was not worth it since I was about to change it after 2 more lvls, so I bought a mannequin instead (equally uneccessary, of course) Now what I'm set on spending money in the forthcoming days: purified stones. Without these it's impossible to transmute a lot of yellow stats on gear, so it's worth the investment. And a perma mount once they start selling all the new mounts

No, that was my point. For me to enjoy the game it would have been necessary to buy things that I consider too expensive. That's why I stopped playing.
'That does not include that I have to sort my inventory every three seconds, so I bought backpack-space'
Not needed - Its a tiny hassle but nothing that should bother anyone - store your important stuff in the bank or your house and sell off any junk as soon as you enter town. I like to feel that having only two sets of backpack spaces gives its own challenge and realism.
'Fun does not include to not have a mount when I need it because the two hours ran out just a few minutes ago, so I bought a permanent mount.'
Not needed - For a start the maps are not that big, and there's more than enough teleports to make moving around pretty painless.
'Adding to that, I bought some potions here, some equip-pimp-stuff there'
Not needed - learning how to REALLY play your class with standard equipment and potions will always give you an advantage over someone who hasn't but has just bought some stuff from the item shop.
'Than they brought in a new mini-game I really liked''
Mini games are usually for when you've exhausted everything else the game has to offer and you just want to do something pointless to kill time - at the point of realising you 'needed' potions for it you should have simply stopped playing it.
Even though you didn't need to do any of the above, you should still sympathise with the developers who need money to update and further their game. Forgetting the mini-game, the rest of the stuff you bought would have stayed with your character for however long you wanted to play - if you played this game for another 3/4 years with the same characters then it actually works out at very good value and much cheaper than P2P MMOs.
Personally I think ROM should be a P2P game so all of these annoyances would be a thing of the past. They could offer it at half the amount that WOW or LOTR charges and still get hundred of thousands of subscribers.

Oh, I see I suppose you're right.
