What is the fascination with grape and orange soda?
When I was a teenager and I worked for McDonald's about 90% of the Aferican American population would always order orange soda. Then when I worked for BlockBuster during college, the vast majority of Africa Americans would grab the Fanta Orange soda from the coolers.
Now, I thought this was just me butt hen when I saw family guy, Peter borrowed some of Cleveland's magazines and they were all Grape Soda Today and the Orange Daily Dew. Then I was like "WTF?! So it wasn't just me?!?"
Now, to my black friends out there. What is the fascination with grape and orange sode? I love Fanta too but I also grab Dr Peppers and Pepsi whenever lol.

My roommate (white) was accused of being black (by a black man) when he was spotted drinking nothing but orange soda at work. He had told me about this, but I had never heard of the connection. Hope you get an answer, I'm curious as well.

A friend of mine worked at a movie theater during college and whenever the Nutty Proffessor came out, they ordered x3 the amount of fruit punch for the weekend. Apparently that is the norm. Who knew?

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
Chappelle kinda explains it. Lower middle class african americans commonly drink orange and purple drink growing up. It comes in gallon jugs and tastes like shit, but its rather cheap.

We had this conversation at work the other day. Like some one else said it is cheap. Also on a semi related note, alot like to eat Carp. I fish alot and love Catfish, thing is I catch a lot of carp and leave it to die on the bank. This black guy at work was all excited, telling me to give him all of it. I was like sure thing man I will bring an extra cooler for you lol.

As the token black ninja of the site...I think Chappelle explaned it best. I remember my dad always got grape soda and stuff. Suger, Water, Purple makes the stuff man. I actually got some orange juice in the fridge. Just goes out fast in the fridge, but drink is dranked slowly.

I used to hate Orange Soda but now I can't get enough of it. The good stuff costs just as much any other soda these days though. Very refreshing as long as it has plenty of carbonation.
I used to hate the flavored drinks but the Fanta Orange has really grown on me. Very tasty

Originally a fanta grape or orange hit the spot once in a while. However, once I came to Japan I could not stop drinking grape fanta. I think it might be because the only three familiar sodas are Coca-cola, Pepsi, or Fanta Grape. So personally when I get back to the states I think my new found appreciation for Fanta grape will continue.
Easy to love, hard to forget.
Well, I'm caucasion and I love Fanta Orange soda. On the other hand .... That purple stuff... Is disgusting..
Now I am really not sure why you people like it so much. It could be what the previous poster said, about lower class african american's purchasing generic soda brands with waky flavors to save a buck. Then again, they can also just purchase generic regular soda.
This question should also bring up.. Why do blacks also really like friend chicken, and watermellon so much? Thats something I don't understand. Its something you'll always see at a black picnic. Dont get me wrong.. I love friend chicken and watermellon, but its a true tipical stereotype about black persons.
So whats the deal?

I'm not going that route. Just saying I seriously doubt there are many users on this site other than white/asian males.
I'm black, but pick and choose the racial commentary I'll participate in. As you can see, it can get ugly and divisive after awhile, since as harmless as the conversations start, someone usually has broader ideas about "sterotypical" black people with poor "grammer".
That said, it's just a stereotype. Within the same contexts the stereotypes can qualified, they're disqualified. A-la if it was some fixation with fruit flavored beverages at McDonalds, how come the Hi-C and Lemonade aren't mentioned, and aren't we supposed to have a fixation with Iced Tea too? At least in the south. If it's a fixation with soda period, like someone already mentioned, how come no Coca-Cola or Pepsi?
Anyway, the truth is closer to reality; it's not like McDonalds or wherever else has 20 different soft drinks on tap; and of the fruit flavored sodas, it's not like there's mango and pineapple and etc.
You notice particularly whatever you're particularly ingrained to notice; that's what stereotypes are about. We have a lot of silly ones about white people as well I wouldn't put much stake into.
I'm the only "known" black person on these forums.

Hi-C is orange drink. That slightly tart taste on the back of your tongue after drinking it... mm... orange drink.
As for Iced Tea, I didn't realize that was attributed to blacks... just southerners in general. Most of the people around here (who are generally white) go nuts over that stuff. And then dump so much sugar into it I wonder why they just don't order soda...
Iced Tea is a southern thing, not a black thing.

Where's Kool-Aid at? People that happen to be black at my work are always joking around about it. I think its more of an inside joke thing.

What're you talking about? I said the same thing as you; that stereotypes are only stereotypes because people pay attention to certain things. But those things aren't as particular as they can come off. I was only explaining that there's no "why" if anyone was honestly searching for one. Case in point, fried chicken; black or not, that's probably the way most Americans have had their chicken prepared throughout life more often than not.
The only thing I took offense to was hvc's comments about most black people being thick-headed and possessing poor "grammer", which was also the only thing I pointed out. Should I not have?
