At 2:16pm on March 15th 2004, five years ago today, Eve University was founded by our CEO: Morning Maniac. For those who don't know us, we have been described as one of the few truly altruistic corporations in New Eden. We take new players and teach them what is necessary to survive and be successful in Eve with scheduled lessons and events, guest lectures from external pilots, a supportive environment and a forum crammed full of information. And on top of this, we also provide ships, modules, ammo and skillbooks to our members, as well as various other initiatives.
Since that day five years ago, the University has gone from its humble beginnings as a place where some experienced players could interact directly with a handful new players, providing them the benefit of their experience, to what it is today, with thousands of instructive forum posts, weeks of recorded lessons, and hundreds of millions of ISK being spent a week on the student membership.
However, amongst all of this, one thing is clear - Eve University is not something that could exist without the support of the community and its members.* Without the tireless work of our recruiters, we would not be able to accept new members without significant risk.
* Without the selfless members who have taken their own time to teach, we would have no lessons.
* Without the never-ending work of the logistics department, we would not be able to efficiently provide the resources to the membership.
* Without the members of the ILN, the Ivy League Navy, defence of the University would be considerably more difficult.
* Without Morning Maniac coming up with the idea and forming the corporation, may pilots in Eve would not be in the same positions they are today.
* And most of all, without the donations, support, and backing from the community at large, Eve University would be unable to continue at the level is has been doing.
What many current and ex-members are aware of is that Eve University is greater than the sum of its parts - it is not simply a corporation, an alliance, a forum, some servers, people who share their knowledge, or anything so simple. In a cut-throat universe with infinite potential for backstabbing, theft, espionage and destruction of peoples hard work, the fact that Eve University even exists can be quite surprising, but that neglects what E-UNI actually is.The core of the University is altruism which Morning Maniac started 5 years ago and it transcends simple constructs like corporations and forums. Above all else Eve University is a concept, and you cannot wage war against such things. If somehow Eve University itself were to be disbanded tomorrow and all its assets disappeared, the concept would continue to exist, and I truly believe it will still exist until the last star in New Eden burns up the last of its fuel and goes dark.
The names and faces may have changed over the years, but Eve University is still the same concept it was those five years ago - experienced players giving back to the community and new pilots pooling their resources and learning amongst themselves. As New Eden changes, expands and evolves, Eve University will still be here, freely teaching those new players what they need to know to be a success.
So, to the community of New Eden on behalf of Eve University, its current, past and future students and staff, thank you for these last five years, and here's to another five.Fly safe o7

I was a Unista for a couple of months and it helped me alot. If you are new to game, check out eve uni.
The university is current war decced by The Privateer alliance. Bastards, can't leave the university alone to train new people (which some may ultimately join Privateer Alliance after graduation). They just want to distrupt classes.
Celestial Order - The Social Online Gaming Community
that is also a good lesson to learn for the older students

I must say, war is always a learning experience.
Although it isn't much fun being stuck at a station with no chance to get out - especially if you're new and want to do something.

Congratulations to Eve-University on five years. The selfless dedication of fellow players and students who make up the University to help new folks get into the game is awesome. Eve-University helped me starting out, they helped make the learning curve not quite so cliff like. Their dedication to the corp, students, and to EVE deserves praise.
Grats Eve University

Ugh, Eve University.
Such a blight on New Eden that I can't even begin to vocalize my disgust for what they do. Teaching people to blob and mission run isn't education, nor is it an accurate portrayal of Eve whatsoever.
I say that as someone who was part of Eve University for a couple of months whilst I still had the naive mindset that many newcomers have.
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
i dont see how teaching newbies how to play can be anything less than admirable, sure the pvp teaching may be a little lacking and the whole "lockdown" thing a bad idea, but i dont think anyone should be disgusted by it.
most alliances blob up, im sure they dont teach "never engage unless you outnumber the enemy by 50%" at eve uni.
Happy anniversary Eve University =D
Fly safe!
Goodtimes, Eve-Uni has been great all these years.
Good to see those old guys still ticking.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
I'm too lazy for an e-argument, so I'll stick to words and not links.
The current Eve University combat SOP is to not engage unless the opponent is outnumbered 3 or 4 : 1 or more. Never, never ever, have I seen an Eve University gang engage with less than that unless they have something large (like the Phoenix which they used to pop belt pirates with). This is what they teach people who are members, frequently using the words "solo PVP is dead, don't try it". Malleable minds make for mindless idiots.

If there's one thing that I absolutely hate on this world it's the people that criticise other's people work, especialy when the work in question is an initiative based on volountary participation and good whill in other people's free time. I respect people that try and fail, and absolutely despise people who mosk them in failure while not being able to put up themselves. If youu know what's so badly wrong with EVE uni, and you think you can do it better, I suggest you go and do it yourself and show us all how it's done, if not just shut up and stop polluting this thread.

When their "education" itself is fundamentally flawed, it stops being education, and becomes a brainwashing.
That said, whilst I probably could do better in some of the classes that I actually know my stuff about, I wouldn't, for one and one reason only. The EVE community as a whole is a cesspool, intersected by individuals who actually make a difference to the game on a more noticeable level. Teaching newbies how to blob, retain their morals (which, in turn, will make them more subsceptible to emotional outbursts when they encounter the majority of the PVP world) and run missions with no education as to the dangers of it doesn't qualify as a decent education.
It's cool though brah. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but trying to one up people that a) have a different opinion to your own, and b) don't actually care as to yours as a rule doesn't really work out at the best of times. I commend you for your effort to defend a boat full of holes though.
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
urgh. if eve uni really are teaching not to engage unless at least 2:1 odds im going to stop recommending people join them and head for agony for their pvp education instead. fought agony in curse, they arent uber leet, but at least they wont run from even numbers.
and baz is funny.
Bazman is both Scottish and a postman.
Agony are terrible on a whole other front.
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
agony may be terrible on a great many levels, but at least they will fight. that deserves some credit and recognition. plus, when you're talking about a training corp you expect lots of newbies and comedy mistakes.

Initiative acted upon is worth more than any opinion ... one is entitled to have any opinion, which doesn't mean that voicing it is always good or appropriate ... basicaly you come to the "happy birthday" thread of someone and start spewing venom. Regardless of your own opinion about eve uni, that is not appropriate.
My words still stand ... prove it you can do it better, and you have a ground to stand on, in which case I owe you an apology. Untill then, you have no ground to stand on and your own criticism isn't worth a dime.
The use of proof or STFU as a counterpoint in this discussion is both immature and a cry for help.
Voicing mindless support for Eve University without actually quantifying your remarks, especially when they get a lot more bad press than they do good, does not do the corporation justice, if justice is needed. All it does is make you look like a mindless drone, spouting the same hyped up propaganda that many of the "Ivy League fanclub" feel the need to preach to anyone and everyone that is listening.
Thus and therefore I will not be subscribing to your childish attempt at a counterargument which, purely from the perspective it is voiced, is a logical fallacy in it's own right. Older players trying to get people to join a corporation that educates newcomers in outdated combat practices and dangerously thin mission running information does not constitute an education. If it makes you successful, sure, advertise that, but don't be surprised when people turn around and point out that the advertising which you are spouting with such enthusiasm isn't up to scratch.
As far as your proof or STFU comment though, I believe the only response that you will understand is NO U. I don't feel the need to justify myself to you just to preserve my e-honour, and it certainly does not mean that I don't have a leg to stand on. You've created your very own little oxymoron saying that it's ok for people to have their own opinion, but it's not ok for them to voice it if it's incorrect by your standards.
I believe the term is fanboy, is it not?
/edit: spellings :V
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
Don't be mad at Sofail, there are always people who have different opinions.
When Sofail creates EVE Pwniversity, or something else where he can teach his PvP secrets, we'll make a thread in 5 years for him.
I'm not a people person .
By which I mean, I have no intention of sharing what I do in Eve with other people (the guide I was writing that is stagnating on an external somewhere off the west coast of Scotland seems to prove this). It's not about proving that you can do better, because it's a corporation with multiple "instructors" against an individial, all of who have different mindsets.
Which is why people are failing in this thread.
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
I never said EVE uni is doing it either right or wrong, it isn't the point. It is not mindless support, rather, I commend them for trying and doing even if they failI. I also never said that you automaticaly don't know anything. You coul'd be the most knowledgeable person out there for all I know - both options are irrelevant. What is relevant, that there is a group of people trying to teach other people something.
Even if they are not doing everything totaly right, which is debatable on it's own because we all know there is more than one way to skin a cat in this game, they are still doing much more than you do.
Criticising other oeople's effort is very easy - making an effort yourself is much harder and takes more energy - and you take a spotlight by doing it so other people that don't make the same effort feel they have the right to criticise, and the obligation to "correct" what you are doing wrong, while not being prepared to put up and do it themselves.
We can start from the notion that yes - by taking some action, you are more or less certanly going to do things wrong and make mistakes. On the other hand however, you are also bound to do some things good. By doing nothing, you are safe from mistakes, out of the spotligh and out of reach of other people's criticism , however you are not doing any good either because you are not doing anything.
Like Bruticus said, when you create the EVE Pwniversity and run it for 5 years, you come here and tell us and I will take everything I said back.
You can also join EVE uni, share your knowledge with them and help them correct the obvious mistakes that you think they are doing - That is an effort and at that point you will deserve to be commended even if you fail.
Sofail,
I can' really see what your issue is.
You have the right to disagree with EVE Uni training program as much as I can never acknowledge empire wars being PvP. What's the point then?
There are as many oppinions how to PvP as there are players. EVE Uni is offering just one type of oppinion - take it or leave. The basics and mechanics you will get tought are the same no matter how you obtain them. There are different ways how you can learn to play and find out what play style suits you the best. No path is right for everyone.
I think that sofia's problem is that blobbing is detrimental to pvp skill and really is hurting the pvp side of the game.
when the answer to "how do i win this fight" is not a clever fleet manouver, or unexpected target calling or simply having a great gang behind you full of battlehardened pilots but simply "i shall bring a fleet that outnumbers theirs so much that they have no chance at victory" you see no skill development in your pilots and people start avoiding fights. thats not a good thing.
eventually everyone ends up banding together in naps and refusing to engage in a fight unless its a massive lagfest with capital support, and that shuts out anyone who isnt a member of a massive powerblock.
teaching newbies to pvp by blobbing just ensures that when they graduate they will continue with the same old habits.
So is gate/station camping and hunting noobs or ratters.
You can't blame EVE Uni for game mechanics.
