After a dissapointing Darkfall was released, and after trying for HOURS to try and get DAOC up and running, I find myself searching elsewhere for an MMO.
Before they are suggested, don't bother with suggesting WoW or WAR.
Beyond that, please give your advice on some games worth trying out and some games to avoid like the plague (ie Wow and WAR). I like a good community and a vibrant world with fun gameplay and GOOD end game content (raids are not good end game content).
Your help is greatly appreciated. I don't care if they are games you have to pay for, but I do not trust free to play games.

I agree 100% with you on this subject. I believe there are way to many WoW clones for one. And you ask if there is a damn good one out there worth playing at this point in time?? Well me personally I am kind of playing the F2P game Florensia but I have not logged on for a awhile I guess it kind of not held my attention for that. So I am HOPEFUL that KOTOR or STO will bring something new to the table. I would like to hope that Earthrise will also offer us something new and exciting. Yes I think Sci Fi is going to be the way to go for MMO's considering FANTASY is WAY over done.
If you want to step away from the world of MMORPG and just play a MMO I recommend the browser based game astroempires.com. It takes awhile to get used to but it has thousands of players and gets extremely addicting fast. Initially you will find yourself farting around figuring out what to do but eventually you will catch on and it is great. Althought there are times that it is very involved, there is a lot of downtime while structures/fleet is building so you can browse or play something else. If you like what you see drop me a PM and I can help you get started with strategy and what not.
It is free but you have limited features available until you subscribe. The subscription is only $5 a month and is totally worth it.
-if you dont care whatsover about graphics: Dark Ages (not DAOC)
-Spellborn has a great storyline and nice graphics, only its new so the endgame still needs work.
-Everquest 2, once you've gone beyond the noob area, is a game that gives a truly epic feeling, if you've got the machine to handle all its whisles, the quest are a bit less engaging then those of spellborn, but still fine, and the main point is you join a guild to play with.
-FFXII online is a great game in every aspect: epic quests (cant stress this enough, many hundreds of hours of pure questing with cutscenes, storytelling, intrigue and you name it), nice graphics (even if its only ps2, the did a good job stylising it), housing, fun mini-games.....the only problem is its for hardcore gamers (everything more or less takes alot of time)
Finally, if you dont care to wait a year or two: Star Wars: The Old Republic Online (also called KOTOR online)

Final Fantasy 7
the past 5 months or so is the first extended time in over 10 years that i havn't been playing a mmorpg. there just isn't a good new one.
WAR is ok but its not an extended stay.
AOC, i didn't think it was quite as bad as everyone else, but even shorter stay than WoW.
LotRO, i found to be a single player, once through the stories than byebye.
DAoC was awesome. no doubt about that, but its dead.(i know the classic servers are still semi-hopping sometimes but dying now that origins is officaly never coming out)
you can only do so much of WoW before you have to make it a job, no thanks.
the rest of them, either you really have to be a fan and get into it (like vanguard, eq2) which im really not so i found them boring, or they just plain suck major ass(anyone who thinks darkfall is even a little bit good is only trying to talk themselves into it).
there just isn't one with a world out there right now that the older mmorpg players really want to 'move in' to. right now theres no point in wasting all that time building up a character when you know are just going to jump ship at the next mmorpg release hoping thats the one you are waiting for.
long winded..woops, but no theres not one thats damn good right now.
AO: If you can see past badly dated graphics and animations as well as the most horrendous grind in a Western MMO you'll be rewarded with probably the most complicated item/equipment system going. This will keep you intersted and challenged for a long time, especially if you're into PvP as twinking is carried out at all level ranges for level locked PvP control zones. The grind can get real bad though and creds for a newbie are very hard to accumulate until you find a niche in the market to supply.
Even though it seems to me that your just not into MMO's at this point in time. I will suggest one MMO that doesn't get the attention it deserves, mostly due to the way it's handled. And that is The Chronicles of Spellborn, a game with a really nice combat system. It takes a little thought to get used to since it's FPS twitched based, but it is very tactical. The skill deck instead of action bars also adds a new twist to the game. Plus, even though the world is instanced, each zone is nice in size. And the instancing never really feels like to much. Plus add to the fact that there are plenty of neat little easter eggs and whatnot to find in the game, adds to a really solid game. As noted though, the endgame isn't fully in-tune. But the fact that the combat system is tactical means if your good enough, you can do end-game things before you ever reach the end-game. I would give it a shot, it is a different game. And the game really runs smooth to. I play on high settings for the most part with a cheap 2 ghz dual core and a decent ati 4650 card and get really nice fps.
Also to add, TCoS is still in Closed Beta but should be in Open Beta rather soon. They will offer a Freemium account up to 7.9, although talks right now could change that to 11.9 with resctrictions. But hey, thats what a trial usually is but less. After you hit the level capp you will have to pay to advance, but you will not have to purchase the game. So the client is free, only the subscription fee cost. They are looking for two sub models, one is paying with a CC. The second is using acclaim coins, which in all honesty, is the same as using a CC, except you can use the coins across all games. But let me state this, it is not a cash shop game, and will not be anytime soon, or ever. And this game is a game that makes you think, meaning no instant quest tracker that just shows you a giant red circle on your map. You have to use some of that thing you learned in school called reading. Trust me, it's fun and engaging and puts you into a game if you actually try it. Most people refer to that as the immersion factor. Hope this helps and good day.
I looked into spellborn and EQ2. I have nothing to lose but time, so why not? Thank you all for your suggestions.
Let me know if you find the mythical MMO you want, cause I want it too
I find that as long as you dont care about keeping up with the joneses then i would actually pick like 3 or 4 different MMOs and play them each for 3 months ata time then switch to the next one. This way you wont get bored as fast it should keep games fresh. Obviously I would only choose one pay to play game and a few F2P games. GL:)
WoW IS a good mmo. However there are so many annoying fanboys that you actually start to hate that game.
And then there are haters. They probably didnt even play game normally, they just had 'THIS GAME SUCKS' in their mind all the time and then just quit. Even if they liked it, they think its bad for their e-honour to play the game everyone hates. If you ignore both of these groups - the game is quite good, period. Not the best and not the worst tho.
If you havent played - id recommend Guild Wars. I think its a game every mmo player has to play eventually, just like eve online.
Why? The game has a lot to offer - other games cant. Also any decent player would not ever put it into 'worst game ever' or something like that. Even if they dont love it, they should still say that its a decent game that is different.
People say that PvE content in GW sucks, because it has boring atmosphere etc. Well thats not true. How many times you heard anyone in WoW really pay attention to any storyline behind instances or raids? Not many times if any lol. So all whats left to discuss is the gameplay itself in those instances of GW. It is great. Great challenge throughout the game, teamplay is a must. Unlike WoW the PvE content is not about leveling fast to the max level and then have fun there. You have fun and challenge in every instance, ofcourse the later ones are more difficult, but you cant beat them without tank and healer like you can in WoW. Support really supports lol
And then there is PvP... its great, its never the same and you cant really say you tried pvp unless you got into a good company of people who can actually teach you not just a thing or two, but pretty much everything from scratch.
I recommend you to try GW, because it has no monthly pay. You buy it once and you are free to play. If you get hooked you can buy the expansions.
Last, but not least - Warrior/Monk is not the best combination like many tend to think.

Tried: Ultima Online, Everquest 2, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Flyff, Perfect World, Silkroad Online, EVE Online, Ryzom.
Sazabi I agree WoW is a good MMO from lvl 1-60 but I have to say past 60 WoW use to be a good MMO until they OUTDID and is OUTDOING themself. If they would of just not been soooo unhappy with there own game things would of been fine.
ehm just for correction: spellborn isnt instanced....
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
For the most part I play two games at a time. 1 pay 1 Free 2 Play
I will run down a list of the games I played and what the games are about.
UO - Kind of the MMORPG that started it all. The game is skilled based meaning like Darkfall their are no levels, but instead you level up your skills. The game has a complete sandbox feel to it, so very non linear and basically you can do whatever you want when you want. The game is pretty deep in terms of content, and their is a 2d client and a 3d client. The game was just not bag of tea.
FFXI- HadsFinal Fantasy Imprint. Has a Main Class/Sub Class system to the game. I played the game at release and found it to be a grind fest, and was hard to find a party. But people who love the game, absolutely love it. I do not know if they fixed it, but the account managament system took some getting used to.
WoW- The 500 pound Gorilla. Lots of hours of gameplay, huge fan base, tons and tons of quests, PVP battlegrounds, and Arenas as well as some open pvp on a pvp server. The endgame instances are usually very engaging, and now they do not require hours upon hours of setting up and organization. Deep in lore. The only problem for me though, is now the game is just too dumbed down and easy. I left the game 6 months after Burning Crusades was released, but still watch my friend play it sometimes and it just looks like they made the game too easy.
Guild Wars - Fairly decent Graphis, game really relies on players skill because of the 8 skill at a time mechanic. Free to play (costs to buy), 3 different add on packs plus one Expansion pack. Games actually have a storyline to follow with the Mission system. Add a Hard mode and have the ability to vanquish the whole game of mobs. 2 class system, Battleground and Arena based PVP. Games hold the attention for somewhat but after awhile you are really left with nothing to do other then grinding for mats for gear, or reputation or achievements.
LOTRO- To me best PVE game out there. The class roles are really defined, and the game is heavily party based (Cannot complete book quests without fellowships). The Book quests are engaging and offer great rewards, game is moderate in diffuclty so it keeps your attention. Their is a fun crafting system. The game looks beautiful, community is nice. The end game raids are fun (Rift, Annunimas, Helegrod), have not checked out the Expansion pack but they added Moria and about to add Lothlorien, legendary weapons. Only thing is the PVP system in that game is god awful.
WARHAMMER - Great PVP game. Has Battlegrounds, Open Realm Vs Realm, Keep Sieges. Their is PVE I just found it not very engaging, and the end game instances do not offer great reward Itemization for the diffuclty of the instances. Lots of classes (24 in all, but technically being that each class has a mirror class their is really only 12 classes). Fast paced gameplay. The world is just really dark though, and I do not know was really missing that mystical feel I got with other mmo's.
Runes of Magic- Right now the game that I am playing. Open Beta just ended and the game is being offically released tommarrow. The game has a huge WoW feel to it in terms of game design and UI. But the game has a lot of things that WoW does not have. It has a Dual Class System, The ability to pick up all the gathering skills and crafting skills. Player Housing, Guild Castles. Does not have battlegrounds at the moment, but will have it implemented soon as well as having a Guild vs Guild system. Tons of quests and instances, and really does not require to pay any money to have fun. (Might have to spend some money in the cash shop to be uber competitive but to me not really neccessary).
If you want actual end-game content, rather than merely grinding for levels and/or gear, then try Guild Wars. Beat a campaign in easy mode, and then you can switch to hard mode, and everything in the campaign becomes suitable for max level players with perfect gear. In hard mode, mobs are higher level, have higher attributes, have more health, run faster, cast faster, attack faster, and have skills recharge faster--even as compared to areas in easy mode that are intended for max level players. There are some pve-only skills that basically function as cheat codes to let incompetent players get through stuff, but you can play the game without those crutches to get the intended challenge. And unlike most games where the only "challenge" is in trying to clear something intended for higher level and/or better geared players than you, hard mode in Guild Wars is intended to still provide a challenge to max level players with the best possible gear.
Umm dude your post describes grinding to a T. But your not grinding for levels your grinding for achievements, reputation, mats, and elite skills.
Guild Wars at End game is ALL about grinding.
All hard mode is, is grinding mobs to vanquish and area which basically means your are just killing hundreds upon hundreds of mobs
The search continues :P

It's not grinding for reputation if you're not given any reputation for it, and reputation doesn't matter anyway. It's not grinding for elite skills if you've already got all the elite skills (which you did in easy mode). It's not grinding for materials because you already have perfect gear and thus aren't trying to get better gear.
If the only "reward" for completing a mission is that you've completed the mission, how is that grinding? It doesn't even unlock the next mission, because you already did that in easy mode. The only reason to do the mission or vanquish or whatever is is if you want to do so for its own sake. And the content in Guild Wars is pretty good and considerably varied, unlike that of most MMORPGs.
