Holy heck what's with the lack of good sci-fi mmo's... ??????

ginettiginetti Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 301

Hi all,

I'm a gamer and I love all types of games. I have however had my fill of the fantasy setting and am totally upset at the lack of good alternatives, in particular the sci-fi genre.

I loved Fallout 3 - but that's not an mmo. However an mmo set in that kind of world would be amazing.  I'm even looking forward to the new super hero mmo's that are mean to be coming out (one from DC one from Marvel) but again, there are just too many gosh darn fantasy settings.

I'm tired of wizards, rogues, and fireball spells.

I've said this before and i'll say it again, the shadowrun setting is perfect for an MMO setting.

Sure, a gun blast can be the same as a fireball spell, but image wise it would just be much more fun.

Does anyone know of a good free to play sci fi (non flyer or space sim like eve please) that is either already well established, recently launched or in beta testing...

If so please let me know.

I'm currently messing about with Runes of Magic, after having spent months in warhammer online, and while RoM is lots of fun and well made, i just can't seem to enjoy it.

End of rant.

And thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Earthrise is one of the better looking titles in the new batch of games coming out this/next year. Its a sandbox style MMO (like star wars galaxies or ultima online) and it looks amazing. Same setting as fallout 3, post apocalyptic.

Also, unless youve been under a rock you know that star wars the old republic is coming out. Probably gonna be awesome but im gonna shoot for earthrise first as Id rather stray away from quest/level based MMOs.

We need an open sci-fi world of exploration, customization, and innovation.

We really are suffering, so many of us, unwisely subscribed to MMORPGs we dislike.  And so we continue to get the same MMORPGs, with different lore, that we dislike.

Currently, I am not subscribed, but I am, like you are, a "gamer" for LIFE.  Similarly, I thought FALLOUT 3 was ... excellent.  It is a brilliant game, and everyone should BUY it.  People should BUY it so that smaller companies that produce brilliant games have a fighting chance against the big companies that are destroying innovation, creativitiy, challenge, content, and community in our MMORPGs.

btw, keep looking for free to play and you never find that great game, as it wont be made for free :)

Well for me, EVE is the ultimate Sci-Fi sandbox....do anything you want, from smuggling, to politics, to mining, to combat, to exploration...the list is endless.

2009 looks very good for non fantasy....you have fallen earth, earthrise, huxley, Champions online, DC universe (though i think that is 2010), jumpgate evolution, Global agenda, Star Trek, Stargate Worlds (if they can get out of the mess they are in),  and my personal dream mmorpg...Star Wars: The Old Republic.

    Hi Theocritus,

Yes I did try Anarchy Online, and I loved it except for the lack of people in it.  Otherwise the setting was amazing.  I heard that the game came out with so many bugs, but that is not uncommon with mmorpg's.  However I am trying a few out now, and will certainly give www.play-earthrise.com a shot, heading there now!

I also can't wait for star wars, even though i'm not a big star wars fan/nut, the setting is different enough to be a breath of fresh air in a sea of wizard hats and fireballs!

UPDATE: Try as i might, i cannot get in the games, even after filling out the forms etc.  Perhaps it is a case of the devs getting to my email and allowing me in or not, either way, i'm still stuck for a good online sci fi mmorpg that is not entirely space based like eve.

AO may be getting an influx of new players soon if they release that graphics engine update that I heard about, like, a year ago. Should be soon, unless they canned it.

Haven't seen anything in here about CoH/CoV.  Have you seriously not tried this yet?  Go get the free trial! :P

I would also mention that SWG in its early days was a great enjoyment for many sci-fi fans. Sci fi games are out there, but the MMO industry is just swaped with fantasy that they can be hard to find

I agreed. Personally i am looking forward to JGE and TOR most. Unfortunatley, the last two big sci-fi MMORPGs (Hellgate ..well strictly may not be a MMO and Tabula Rasa) flopped big time.

Well as another possability there is Infinity but that one is even older than Darkfail i think.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

If you are looking for a well though sci-fi i'd recommend Megaten, it looks a bit funny, but the gameplay is really nice. You can do a lot things it, customize both skills pets and outfits the way you want. And when i say the way you want i mean it literally.

If i had to compare the gameplay, i'd say it looks like Star Wars Galaxy, i hope you'll enjoy.

wow this game looks different - i'm keen to try i it out, is it available in english?

Also to reply to a poster above, yes i've played cov, i got it as soon as it was released and enjoyed it for a long time, but eventualy it got boring due to the lack of items and other things to do. However it did its job and held my attention for many months.

Megaten is a really cool game with a good setting however it has probably one of the single most annoying bugs I have ever seen in a game. Literally every few minutes in open world, you will get stuck and not be able to move anywhere, you can log out or change channels to fix it, but you have to do it every time.  It's not so bad at first, but after dying because you can't move or getting a boss to 10% and then having it run out of range, it will make you bash your head into a wall.

Hold off on that one until that gets fixed, then it should be awesome.
