Lack of MMO magazine?

mark2123mark2123 Member UncommonPosts: 450

Would you like to see an MMO magazine on the shelves in shops dedicated to MMOs, are you content with the mention they get in normal gaming mags or do you think MMO literature/news/reviews belongs online and that's where you want to see it?

I ask because I feel personally that I still like to read a magazine, whether on the train to work, while at home or in my lunchbreaks - there is something tangible about it and you are presented with the sort of things you might be interested in without having to search too hard online.

Maybe there is a niche in the market for a mag and if so, what sort of things would you expect to see?  Reviews, news, previews of future releases, guides, screen shot etc?

Perhaps there are now too many MMOs to have a general mag because if a person plays only one and is only really interested in one MMO, then the majority of the magazine will possibly hold no relevance.

Any views?

There is the Beckett Massive Online Gamer magazine  which you can get  from the states.

I Know it is available in Australia, not sure about in England.

Also these days with the interwebs, magazines don't have the circulation  numbers like they used to have.

I think the main problem with any mmo publication is that the games can change so fast, that by the time a magazine article hits the shelf, it's already out of date information.

A magazine has a delay from the time it's content is complete to the time it hits the shelf, so that means even the last bit to hit the content is going to be at least a week out of date, due to the printing and distribution time. Any information that comes in just after the deadline, it's got to wait until the next issue, by the time that hits the shelf, probably about 5 weeks out of date.

It's not so bad for things like single player games and the like, but for an mmo that changes at such a fast pace, it's far better in my opinion to rely on online news sources.

A magazine for MMOs is kinda like railroad tracks for your monorail.

MMOZine - an electronic MMO magazine that's pretty current with content and sometimes has ingame items giveaways or contests in it.

There were some print MMO magazines, but I think of the three that came out, only Beckett's is still around.

Print magazines have at least a month delay in all content. They're pretty useless for anyone that has access to Google.

I don't have to see a MMO magazine, but am alright if one would be there, but doubt I personaly would buy it, but know almost certain enough will, must say that the last few years I havn't bought any game magazine, where when I was youngers, around 16/20 years old I bought lots of mags to enjoy, mostly due to long travel times gave me something to read while traveling and well at the time laptops and such where not that common and internet was also not that acceseble outside your home.
Currently hardly time to spend time in mags as internet provides me atleast better info which these day's can be looked at where ever I am, I prefer seeing how things work instead of reading how it works, since a few years I do enjoy Gametrailers, reading will mean more use of imagination which often results into becoming more hyped about the game then you might have been have you seen the game in a playeble state on screen, same with screenshots the do not say anything to me as honostly I don't care which game but often with most new games every game looks pretty good, but it does not show how it playes or behaves, how the animation flow or could be clunky....etc....etc.....

And I bet with you many others, I am sure there is a market for it, but also am sure that it would be a high risk to try and start a paper magazine in these day's I mean the amount of mags that already died or are going to close shop is really high.

If there would be a magazine ( i am sure there are a few) of course it should have everything that would be intrested to gamers especially when it's targeted towards MMORPG, so YEAH to reviews/previews/interviews with company/developers or just random people that fit into the MMORPG business, for example perhaps a interview with people working customer support within MMORPG, so if there would be a mag. like I said it should have it all.
Perhaps there are now too many MMOs to have a general mag because if a person plays only one and is only really interested in one MMO, then the majority of the magazine will possibly hold no relevance.
Okay I just said such a magazine should have it all but I meant to have the common articles you normaly would see in a specific magazine. The too many MMO's would not be a problem as other game magazine also manage to do it and trust me not every mag. has each and every game in it that was made in that month but most would focus mostly on high profile title's and like some there could be some pages with some not so high profile games.
    Any views?
Like I said I am sure there is a market for it, but also feel that internet and the easy acces everywhere to it has done harm towards the papers/magazine's

mmorpg.com is the magazine for MMOs.  Just because it's online only doesn't make it any less so.  A paper magazine about online gaming is kinda like a webzine about... er... paper.  Or something.  Point is a website dedicated to MMO games makes more sense than a printed magazine.
