It's a break of the EULA I believe. For those of you saying 'it's no big deal'... it's just as much of a deal as being spammed to by gold sellers though possibly even more so because targetting guild leaders may destroy the community of the competitive product.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
What Cryptic did was stupid and wrong. Maybe low too...but I mostly just think they needed to use a little more tact. Cryptic could have easily advertised for beta testers , specifying the desire for COX players to get involved. Since the playerbase for COX would probably be very enthusiastic to beta test the next generation Superhero mmo from the original makers of COX...all this bad press(if there is such a thing) could have been avoided.
I had high hopes for this game, but this whole fiasco is down right pathetic. With all the people they must have already signed up wanting to try beta why would they even think they need to pull such a underhanded shadey unprofessional move, then respond like a cocky jackass.
I'm amazed at the uproar about all of this, this kind of thing happens on a daily basis.
I used to work for Cable and Wireless, went to work as usual and found a large lorry turn up with a massive billboard on the back advertising IT positions for Vodafone parked outside the main IT office block, the management where beside themselves with fury and tried to get the lorry moved but the driver had gone and locked up, he came back at 5pm to move the lorry on, the police could do nothing as it wasn't illegally parked and they where doing nothing illegal at all, and yes they did lose some IT ppl to Vodafone mainly because the pay was better.
I know my example isn't about a game, it's actually much more serious than having someone post in a forum looking for players, it cost a business specialist ppl, rather than potential subscribers.
I personally use my little grey matter God thankfully blessed me with when I read about new games, I know full well the stuff that the devs write are far removed from the truth of the finished product and I certainly wouldn't be swayed by someone trying to poach players if I am currently enjoying another game.
However players usually only move to a new game when they are bored or unhappy with their current product, so don't try to pin blame on a company for following different avenues for gaining more customers.
I'l agree that it is unethical to do what they are doing, but again it has to be said we the player only move to a new game if we are either unhappy with what we playing or looking for a new challenge, in either case who is to say that these beta testers will even give a glowing report back to their guilds, Cryptic may have shot themselves in the foot by going this route.
Yes I'm going to give Champions Online a try, I'm currently playing Lotro but tbh I'm totally bored with the whole elf/orc blah blah blah fantasy based MMO's and space games don't do it for me, so all thats left is to try a new theme, I'm even considering reactivating my CoH/V account today, so at least NCSoft gets some of my money before I head over to Cryptic.
Apparently Cryptic studios was in need of Beta testers. as everyone knows, it's very difficult to find people willing to play an anticipated games months before release for free, so Cryptic has come up with a solution: Log into a competitors games to invite people to come over to your game. kotaku.com/5176773/champions-online-solicits-city-of-heroes-players
Are you forgetting Cryptic were the ones who made CoX in the first place?
Sure, they sold the IP to NCSoft, but they were responsible for developing the game - and a portion of the Cryptic team still continues development on CoX.
The only thing selling the IP did was allow Cryptic to start development on a seperate superhero MMORPG.
This clearly shows Crytic desperation. CO sucks donkey ass and many us here know it, we just try not to violate NDA.
Also... remember that Cryptic, the company that won his freedom lately has lost it again under Atari. Boy if they knew who Jack was before buying Cryptic.
So, maybe this is showing us that Atari is not interested in releasing crap, because is not interested in loosing money and demanded some positive reviews. Some really smart guy though, wait, super hero game... super hero genre... lets go see if in our old game they like the new game... but thats not the case.

Right... If it sucks why continue playing it? why not just break NDA and do everyone a favor.
I think I'l take my chances when Champions Online releases, if I had listened to the nay sayers around here I probably would never have played 99% of the games I've played, no one tells me what I like or don't like and I don't preach the same crap to others.
In fact I haven't given a toss about what company is making what game, they are all basically the same, with developers moving from one company to another, all I want is to play the game.

Perhaps I should have hinted that I was in beta aswell, I mean who's going to be able to know if I am or not.
And all this was done by community manager, dragged from Hellgate (together with Bill Roper). Just a note. Its a same manager that replied to a question : Q: There are some players interested in network play feature A: Screw them Indeed things got funky , moment they brought Bill "The failure" Roper, abroad
You bite your tongue. Bill Roper is a pioneer of gaming - One of the original game designers for Diablo 1 and 2, those are classics in my book and he deserves more respect than that.

Rubbish. Roper's contributions were primarily PR and voice recording, the latter of which makes him, in part responsible for some of the ridiculous voice acting in the Diablo series. In other words, Roper is nothing more than a mouthpiece, subject to exaggeration, embellishment, and outright lying. He and his cohorts left Blizzard in a huff when Vivendi refused to grant them more authority over Blizzard development. Is it possible that Vivendi knew more about Roper's character back then? Many of the things Roper said would be in World of Warcraft never materialized. The man's proficiency as a liar was even further evidenced at Flagship. Ask some of those lifetime HG:L suckers what they think of him.
Roper's degree of success is nothing more than his ability to promote other people's work and allowing public perception to mistakenly believe that it was his own. Pioneer? I think not. Carpetbagger is more like it. It was a sad day for Cryptic when they hired this charlatan for such a high-level position. I won't buy anything with his name attached to it.

Nope, just a consumer who has been witness to Roper's spin since Diablo 2 was in development. I don't like seeing people getting credit where they're not due. Keep sucking up to Cryptic though. Maybe they'll eventually let you into their beta and even give you a special title to hang beside your name.
Cheers!

City of Heroes has been sold to NCsoft and is currently run entirely by NCsoft. Those employees you're talking about are no longer with cryptic, they are a part of NCsoft now.
Cryptic is now owned by Atari, in other words, Cryptic & NCsoft are now competitors, just like Champions Online and City of Heroes. Cryptic no longer owns or develops City of Heroes.
Only thing I suck up to is my wife, if you think I'm gonna suck up to a games company your seriously lacking marbles.
To show I have no favourites to games companies I currently have on my quick launch bar D2/Fallout 3/GuildWars/NWN2/Spore/Dungeon runners/AOC/DDO/EQ1/EQ2/Witcher/WOW/Titan Quest/Lotro/WAR/AO/POGO/COH/V.
I bounce between all of these games each month and those are the ones I haven't unistalled.
However please don't confuse my enthusiasm with blind faith in a game, I just look forward to relieveing many hours of boredom with something new, I'm sure plenty others are aswell that frequent this website.
So they adverstised in another game to a market who is probably their main focus. That's actually pretty smart... they are taking the product buzz right where it should be instead of blanketing and hoping they get some of their intended market share.
The people playing the game don't seem to be overly upset (I don't see mass protests from them on sites), so if they aren't mad, why should I as a non-playing CoH person give two hoots? Not a problem. If CoH doesn't have it in it's EULA and ToS that this is forbidden, why not?
So its "poor taste". Who's tastes? Businesses? No one cares about that in this economy and as a potential customer, I'd appreciate another company doing it UNLESS they spammed me. I know for sure it would mean the company's game that I was already playing would have to start treating me a helluva lot better or potentially lose me in the future.
I really don't worry about whether one company wrongs another company. That has absolutely ZERO effect on me as a customer other than I get all the attention. Reminds me of when all the different phone companies kept sending me checks to switch from MCI to ATT to Sprint and then back again, giving me 35-50 bucks each time, hehe.
So this is nothing new. We had our drama war in the guild forums at the time, because SoE didnt have an official EQ1 forum by the time WoW launched its beta. And certainly there wasnt the same amount of debate about mmos or websites such as this.
But I digress... anyway, this is not a new strategy. Ive never seen it done quite as ruthlessly as it was done in the case of wow, but it was smart and efficient. Cryptics method was clumsy and easily attacked.
It should have been done by researching the forums dedicated to their competitive type mmo, and in emails to the people of interest there.. Simple really. They need to hire people who can use more subtle aproaches if they want to avoid the flames. But please dont think this isnt done all the time. Its just done sneakier than simple tells in game.
Exactly, I wonder if people yelling outrage have been employed before or live in a very sheltered box. I've seen it and continue to see it all the time in past and present work places and in business in general. This is especially true if there is bad blood between competing companies, or fledgeling companies pissed off at their old parent company...
You can say certain Cryptic employees aren't very clever, you can even be disappointed and uninpressed with their PR and management in general but do realize everyone of these companies have employed these same strategies in one way or another. It's more then likely whoever it is you are working for has too.
So while this is pretty lame I'm not going to ask for a Cryptic flogging or say I won't ever play their games. I might as well stop playing any game or buy any product from anyone for that matter. Anyone interested in a hippy commune? :P
Also NCsoft is far from any white lilly saint either.
You bite your tongue. Bill Roper is a pioneer of gaming - One of the original game designers for Diablo 1 and 2, those are classics in my book and he deserves more respect than that.
more like he showed up at the last minute and claim credit on a already finished game.....notice when bill roper had his own company and made a game from scratch it failed...big time?
hmmm i wonder why.
well roper has his community rep guy from flagship with cryptic it's only a matter of time now .

Problem is that when you personally enter the game and invest so much to personally invite a guild leader of a largest guild to beta test your game. This Guild leader will come over to your game and bring his whole guild with him too.
Do this to several guild leaders and we are talking several hundred players (+ disabling major guilds in competing product)
This can cause several thousands dollar damages to COH monthly
and major dirty tactic of advertising inside of your major competitor product.
NCsoft will be crazy not to do a lawsuit. I think they are biding their time. Waiting for CO to launch so they woould be able to extort more money that way.
Cryptic just got Flagshipped !

theres no justification of this. it was highly unprofessional and you can bet there will be a lawsuit over this.
wow, just epically unprofessional

Something like that shouldn't happen... It's bad if a company acts like that...
I'm amazed at the uproar about all of this, this kind of thing happens on a daily basis.
