That's the great part about PvP games. You can always join the team with no elves and take your agression out on every elf you see. What better way to hate then to kill them in the game.
I actually prefer some good old school D&D lore in my games. If they add a little greek mythology like titans etc even better. I can understand why people want something different but i personally don't like change. I'm not afraid to admit i'm set in my ways of holy trinity specialized classes, grinds and pvp consequences. Too bad games are moving away from all that.
I agree 100% OP! I really don't like fantasy but am forced to play it in MMOs. Honestly, why does fantasy dominate this genre? Scifi dominates most media, yet were stuck with fantasy for MMOs. Yuck.
I love scifi but all sci fi mmo have been very bad, made a huge mistake(SWG,AO,TR) or have a game style that does appeal to masses(EVE).You can hate on the elves all you but even a bad game vanguard is still has a good following,TR was shut down,Earth and Beyond was shut down.High fantasy mmo are consistant they may not good but they rarely fail.
Jumpgate,Fallen Earth,Earthrise,TOR,Stargate worlds and Star trek all coming out in the near future so the elves reign will end soon.
On the contrary, SWG was the best MMO I've ever played.
You all know where this is going. If I see another Elf, Orc or fantasy creature in general, I'm going to hurl. I simply can' take it anymore. For the love of all that is holy, someone, somewhere release a decent PVE centric (with consensual PVP or PVP server) SciFi MMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Earthrise, Fallen Earth, STO, are taking too darn long, I cant take this! I'm ready to download Anarchy Online again or start playing SWG, games many years old just to get away from these fantasy games!! Any other Scifi fans out there? Can we demonstrate that we at least exist????
PS: I play EVE Online already, I would ideally prefer an avatar that isnt a ship.

Thanks for listening!
I'm with ya on that one!
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Yeah, the whole elf thing has been used... but only because its become a sort of given in fantasy games. I mean, if we didn't have elves, what would we have in its place? (I would say sentient machine/robot race Or some new killer race that is sort of like elves at the core but a lot more lenient when it comes to war and that sort of thing)
Fantasy seems to be the biggest seller, in my opinion. Take a look around at most of the popular titles (i.e. WoW) and see how it sales. Industries are going to target the group that produces the most revenue. I used to play SWG until the stupid CU and it was great. I think after the CU and downfall of the game, it really shook the Sci-Fi industry. Creating a sci-fi game, I believe, takes more creativity and advanced thinking-something a lot of people do not have anymore. As for fantasy, however, I am really enjoying the games I am playing. A lot of people now seem to be into that sort of things, especially after looking at the types of movies that are releasing as well. Games and media tend to flow together I think. Fantasy and things of that genre are taking off for some reason.
I am personally a big sci-fi fan, and think it would be awesome to see a good one. But the last one I actually enjoyed was SWG pre-CU, and that was only because I am a Star Wars fan in the first place. AO was fun but the childish PvP environment I ran into really turned me off, plus other pre-historic aspects of the game turned me away as well. RF Online was sort of, well, silly to me. I did not enjoy the feel it gave me at all. I don't really know how to describe it, but the love-sci-fi music that it had in the beginning and all the romance stuff turned me off big time. So currently, there is no sci-fi game that gets me excited. Possibly if Fallout creates an MMO, then I would be excited. Until then, I have to look at this rubbish that third-class industries put out, and the rubbish already out that is in a mess.
It's a dark age for sci-fi I'm afraid... just keep praying to the Sci-Fi god that we may be blessed in the future. =[
I am glad to see others feel as I do and really would love to see a great scifi MMO hit the market and provide a place for "our kind" to enjoy. I have nothing against elves personally, they (and to an extent Orcs) have simply come to represent the fantasy genre to me and I am sick of it all.
I beleive with scifi anything is possible, Any Lore, any race, any class, whatever one can imagine. It would be great to partake in something with limitless possibilities that I beleive only scifi can provide. Fantasy has too many limits, and what was once unique has become overplayed and over exposed. Yes, I do know it sells, I know many many gamers love the fantasy genre, there is no denying this. however I do believe that there is a viable market for scifi lovers as well, I dont think within the last several years we have been provided with a game that can appeal to us as a group, what has been released seems to be more Niche oriented.
Anyway more later, just wanted to keep tabs on the thread and see where it goes.
Sorry, guys, i'm a newbie in mmorpg world. i personally prefer elves, so i'm somewhat confused why you are sooooo sick of this class.
It is used as a statement saying they are tired of playing fantasy games, and are looking for more sci-fi or other type of mmorpg. Since most if not all Fantasy Mmorpgs have elves in it, it becomes a good symbol to use.
lol elves became the symbol..but that doesnt necesarily make it a need for a fantasy game to have elves..they can always add more groups then i wouldnt mind.
You're just sick of tolkein elves, you can write a few lines of lore and make some very interesting elves.
Elves are well known for attending their own funnerals, after all if you're immortal the only way you're ever going to die is if you do it yourself or have someone else do the favor for you. Elves historical interactions with humans have been amazingly similar to any massive immigration to the states. "no elve need apply", and similar cases just because most elfs are perfectly happy staying at one job for all eternity which really whacks out the "human" economy. A common elf joke is that nymphs are stupider than humans, after all a human slut is smart enough to charge for services rendered. When two elves split up it's common practice for the children to be sent between the parents every hundred years or so until they're considered adults. elfs only consider full elfs to be elf, dark elfs/drow and their allies consider themselfs normal elfs as does every race that falls into their sphere of influence(including some oldtimer dwarves) light elfs however would argue otherwise. a dark elf would also consider anyone who considers themself a dark elf to be just that. light elven magic is considered reletivly stagnate and limited by most races, especially since the old laws only allow an elven magic user to add one spell to the great library. dark elven magic is considered to be one of the greatest abominations by nearly any religion, though at the same time very innovative. You can literally see a paladin and a demonoligist working side by side with no issues or conflictions, their high level magic users can even use demonic and holy magic in the same spell and somehow get to to work amazingly well.
Really good post. I think the problem with Elfs (I guess with Orcs too, but I never play them. Orcs are prey not players. heh) that people chose Elf as race and play it like a human with pointy ears. As pure cosmetics. You dont have to be a roleplayer, but why chose an "alien race" when you play like human anyway? I dont know the D&D lore so well, but from the german Pen & Paper game The Dark Eye Elves are designed as something really strange for human. They have an "Elven Weltanschauung": they dont value money at all and most human habits as odd; they regard death as nothing evil, and leave their dead unburied, because leaving them to feed nature does not seem odd to them.
I usually prefer to play Dark Elfs, though I never shared this D&D perspective on them as being evil. In reality this Drow society just would not work anyway. I regarded Dark Elfs always as some kind of warrior culture, like more sophisticated Klingons, if you like. Harsh but not evil. Wood and Light Elfs always were w bit too ethereal depicted for my taste. A Dark Elf is some warrior type of person like, say, Wolverine, for example. I like the Tamriel Dark Elfs (Morrowind/Oblivion) much more for instance.
Generally Elfs could and should be depicted much more alien and not just with some odd style of clothing and architecture. It's kinda the same as it was with SWG - Jedi. So many picked Jedi and just played him like any melee class. Playing Jedi should have been connected to certain RP rules, rules how to behave among people, and why not bind Elfs to similar rules? Rules they have to stick to or risk being excluded from their kind. Now it depends on the world what you chose.
Essentially when people pick races for mere cosmetics they get devalued and kinda pointless. I dont like people who chose Dwarfs, Elfs or whatever then play like John Doe.

I don't think that your comments are necessary. The OP was saying nothing wrong. Also, nobody said that Elves, orcs, etc. arent apart of fantasy. Maybe you need to understand the thread before you post
The real problem with sci-fi MMO's is that most companies that made sci-fi MMO's failed miserably and that discourages other companies to open to that kind of the genre. The only sci-fi MMO close to success was SWG and that failed after some expansions. And you havent seen the extent of it yet.As most of the games that come out this year dont seem to be anything special and will propably fail also.
I expect that sci-fi MMO's will start to bounce back with SWTOR and maybe with Blizzard's new IP MMO? ( Since they are creating a new IP i cant really put it in my mind that it will be anything with Elves/Orcs).August will be a great month this year i expect to see an SC2 release date,Blizzard's new MMO and a lot of vacations :P
I think part of the problem is that the research for game ideas is based on movies, TV shows and comic Books. Why not literature also? How about the worlds created there - CJ Cheryh's Sci-fi with several alien races and 3 separate Human cultures would work well(and no elves or orcs), William Gibson's Works would work well in my opinion, and also Philip Dick's works( Blade Runner was from a short story of his). There was a fairly good Vampire game - single player already that I think would translate well into MMO - Vampire the Masque I think was the name.
For the Record I play and love EVE, how ever there are currently some good games without sissy Elves CoV was already mentioned, I loved it but after level 30 I found it hard to find a group. CoH is another. As was pointed out there are a number of Sci-fi games being worked and and 2-3(if the marvel thing ever comes out) Super hero games(no elves) coming. I also believe that Pirates of the Burning Sea - good bad or indifferent - has NO Elves.
There are choices and there will continue to be choices, without Elves, but on the flip side there will always be people who want to be a sissy Elf, and they have that right. Myself I would like to see Shadow Run be MMO or something set in a Blade-runner like world. Cyberpunk would be nice, second chocie would be a Gothic MMO(complete with Goth rock), but I will probably die of old age before I see that.
You all know where this is going. If I see another Elf, Orc or fantasy creature in general, I'm going to hurl. I simply can' take it anymore. Same here but I came across a game called Requiem Bloodymare. Yes you can call it another Korean grinder and stuff but that only happens in the end. It's a Horror themed MMO rated M. The races are Turan, Bartuk, Kruxena, Xenoa. none of these races has a happy magical little kingdom, maybe they did in the past but they kinda destroyed their world and now they live in a wasteland, Post Apocalyptical world.
Races may resemble races from other games but they look diferent.
Turan - Humans, we al like humans
Bartuk - Orcs, intelligent orcs that are not green this time
Kruxena - Dark Elves, they have dark skin but they have a metalic arm and metalic legs. you can say they are Vampire dark elves (my favorite although male armors look kinda gay, although Females are HOT ))
Xenoa - Fairy like creature, like a small elf but with an evil face, he may look gay nad fantasy like but they are the strongest and most evil race in the game. because of them the world they live in is a desolate wasteland full of monsters.
Ok I've said enough, it's not quite what you are looking for but it can do until you find what you are looking for

Give us a gothic horror setting with vampires and werewolves, or stuff that can be found in Greek or Norse Mythology...lol
i hate it too..take them out now..use some other stuff
