Most solo friendly MMO's

stv182stv182 Member Posts: 46

Hello all, Many MMO's seem to have taken on the formula of haing alot of solo friendly content in the form of questing or outdoor killing, while leaving dungeons and instances as heavy grouping content.

Does anyone know any MMO's that are solo friendly throughout the game having decent solo dungeon and instance content as well.

Thanks

Lotro is quite solo friendly, even though there are no solo dungeons.

But if you intend to solo you should go with regular rpgs, try the witcher, kotor, even fallout 3 or if you want to do oldschool baldur's gate 1 (a must have, cant really talk about rpgs if you've never played it)

If you are willing to wait for Fallen Earth (this summer?), it is advertised as supporting solo play heavily. Even offline leveling via crafting. There is some content reserved for teams and raids, but that is minimal.

If you don't hate $OE, you can try Star Wars Galaxies. It has a free trial, even. Crafting is less a solo venture due to design decisions ( no crafter can make their primary items with out buying components from others).

Guild Wars is another game that is solo friendly, also City of Heroes can be played through solo.

Plus a few others a probably forgot or never found:)

Edit: oops, I better learn to type faster if I'm going to get my $2 in before the playstyle police show up:(

Nope, not what I want. I like MMO's because I like to talk to people and be social while in town or solo hunting and group occasionally. I like to hunt solo because I can't commit hours at a time to look for, join and organize groups.

I don't see where MMORPG means that you have to group to enjoy the multiplayer element.

You don't have to group, but there's been a couple of recent threads where some people want NO solo play at all, and actually want "forced grouping". God knows why, because if the MMO industry wanted us to group, they wouldn't have included content that is soloable.

Like you, I play MMOs because of things like the thriving  in-game Auction House/Bazaar, the updated content and in-game events, the players I can sell to and the players all gathering resources and crafting things that I can buy and save myself some time.  The chat functions are sometimes useful, but I usually use in-game voice chat to talk to RL friends and family and can't be bothered to type to total strangers.

I see no need to actually group if I don't want to.  Apart from the fact that you rarely meet anyone at the same stage of various quests as yourself, why split loot and XP three or four ways when there's simply no need whatsoever.

This is a HUGE lie. I clicked on this thread just to make sure no one said LOTRO.

LOTRO is easily the most group based MMO out there. It's not even close. And by the time you hit your late 20's or early 30's? Heck, its almost all group quests..

BTW, I love LOTRO, Im just sayin...

You should try DDO.  It sounds like it's just the thing you're looking for.

If you like old school original games, and graphics are not the most important thing, try out Asherons Call.  Massive world to explore, no instancing, all dungeons you can enter and pretty much survive in.  Epic quests for things, check out the Lady Aerifall Quest, and quests you can solo easily.  To me still one of the best games ever.

I loved AC, I tried going back some time ago but it was too hard to get back into it after all this time away. It's slowly dying. i'm still baffled that no one has ever tried to emulate the AC design, not even Turbine. I thought it was the best MMO I ever played.

But yes I am basically looking for a game like AC1, although I don't mind hard coded classes vs. skill based development.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't DDO largely group based game play? Or have things changed?

DDO has more soloabitlity then ever but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a mainly solo game.

I would not recommend City of Heroes just for the fact that attempting to solo this while viable is extremely boring. Duo or group litteraly pwns the heck out of solo play in this game because it is so very repetitive.

Looks like you may be interested in TOR, Star Wars: The Old Republic, I'd look into Fallen Earth too as suggested and maybe Earthrise. As for released games, meh it's really hard to say, Ryzom you level solo but there's nothing to do other then craft, you should get yourself involved in a guild to take advantage of the game otherwise you'll be wondering what to do.

I would suggest EQ2 before trying LotrO just because EQ2 has so much damn content you may never notice the group stuff or care about it. There are solo or small group dungeons too, LotrO is basically level by yourself if you want but darn you will group if you want to see these pretty cutscenes.... :)

    WOW...

    ....

    ....

I find it absolutely amazing that people only like MMOs for aspects that could EASILY be scripted and played offline. Amazing.

I'm also amazed that your reasons for not liking grouping is a result of horrible game and mechanic design by current developers. Levels, quest driven leveling, XP and loot split in groups are all terrible design philosophies that seem to be forcing people to not like grouping.

This genre needs to be pulled out of this terrible rut by anyone with competence very soon.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
