Dungeons & Dragons Online is about 80% group based, just like the pen-and-paper game. Solo options are available, especially at lower levels, but for the most part, you kind of really *have* to group up for most of the game.
Everything in that game requires grouping and socializing, even XP. It's why I still play it after 6 years.
The problem is after playing games like LoTRO, EQ2, AoC, and other newer games (In the last 4 years or so) FFXI looks like garbage...... It has terrible graphics compared to any of the newer games and for many that is a game breaker.
LOTRO has been great options for either soloing or grouping. You should check out their free trial.
Vanguard is probably more group based then LOTRO though. Even though there are some quests you can solo it'll make leveling much faster if you group with friends.
To the last few posters: I have spellborn downloaded and updated, but can't log in for some wierd reason. I'm going to try contacting support about it. As I said in the original post, I've already tried Darkfall and didn't like it. As for Vanguard, I found it to also be to heavily based on soloing.
Then you didnt really play Vanguard. It is an old-school dungeon crawler that is meant to be grouped to really play. Vanguard is about the dungeons. Pure and simple. Made by the guy who made eq1
I call bull**** on this one!!!! Vanguard could have been amazing... but before it even launched the devs backed down to the "casual" crowd. First on the death penalty, and later on just about everything else... even instant travel eventually.
Yes, the dungeons require a group... but you dont have to do the dungeons. Many quests are solo-able and you dont even have to do them... you can easily solo up to max level by grinding mobs solo... it doesnt even take all that long.
Then its obvious YOU never played Vanguard either. First on the death penalty? What do you mean? When you die you have to do a corpse run and get your stuff back plus you lose xp. WOW do that? hhmmmm? Most casual players dont want anything to do with corpse runs. Thats a little old school. You dont HAVE to do the dungeons thats correct. But to not do them is kinda missing the whole point of adventuring in this game. There are around 30 dungeons in the world before even getting to level 20. The game is built for the dungeon crawl. If people decide to NOT run dungeons thats possible to just do quests which alot can be soloed but they are missing out on the point of the game.

BT, I totally agree with you. That is the awesome thing about Vanguard...if you can manage to bring a group of friends into the game; even if it's just 3-5 of you, I think your group would NEVER stop playing that game. It has its faults, but its pros...NO game does it better.
You CAN solo a good bit of Vanguard, but you would have to play just the "right" class and miss out on more than half of the content in the game (this includes certain mounts and certainly gear), to do so.
Vanguard is a game that is all about community, and shows this from the difficulty of the quests that offer the best gear, to allowing players to have friends along on their ships and in their houses.
If you are looking for a grouping game, Vanguard is it, in my opinion. The biggest downfall is that sometimes it is HARD finding a group when you need one. I think your best bet is to either bring some friends along that want to try the game out too, or immediately find you a guild with either people around your level or people who are altoholics, and you'll have a good time.

*raises hand* I'd like to second that suggestion. LOTRO is a great game for players that like both solo and group play.
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
