The website will probably crash, not sure about the servers, though.

Dont think so. During open beta there were 500,000 beta testers acording to Blizzard website. Forum worked perfectly but there were some small issues with lag in the game. I dont think all of the 500,000 people would be able to buy the game when it goes retail not that its bad but because many young age players cant afford it. Don't worry mate everything going to smooth as a butter. :)

Just because there were only 500000 people in OB, which they still didnt let in everyone that wanted to get in, means that there will only be 500000 people on launch. I would suspect there will be a lot more than that, and i wouldn't be surprised if their servers crashed or had a lot of lag.

Don't be absurd. The open beta signup amount is not equivalent to the amount of people that will be subscribing to the game. That is like saying that how many people download a certain demo is going to be near the amount of the people playing the game.

It is possible that sooner or later they'll reach the 500,000 subscription mark. But if you think that is happening within the first week of release you're on something. You have to remember you got all these huge games coming out, and a MMORPG competing with it.

As for server stability, unless they under-estimate the strain, there will not be a problem. The beta was fairly smoothe except for a 2-3 day lag, which was fixed.

Blizzard I think can pull off a smoothe launch. Unless they just act idiotic and don't plan for a busy release day.

There was a TON of lag for ob when it first started and they didnt implement the server population limits. I hope to god they have a better idea to limit lag in the retail version than simply limiting the populations of servers and having lots of different servers. I expect more than 500 000 people to be playing retail before the end of the release week.

Perhaps they learned from the Ob and have fixed a lot of the issues but perhaps its just not fixable and theyll go with their current lag workaround (server population limits) if they do that ill be extremely dissapointed.

As it is i probably wont be playing retail due to a lack of time and the fact that i spent so much time on my ob char only to have it wiped. I dont have the time to do all that work over again when there really hasnt been many changes.

I consider their reasoning for a wipe (optimizing server code and hardware) a poor excuse as to why they are doing it.

Perhaps if that is the truth though maybe the wipe will make the difference and reduce lag?

Who knows. All i know is im too busy in school to put up with a laggy release and to spend 70 hours getting to the point i was just at in the exact same game with the same content.

I love this people post before they have read all the facts. Blizzard have stated there will be a limited number of boxes at launch.

So even if they sell only 500 000 at launch which is still a lot of sales and potential accounts they know how many servers they need to cope with this from the beta. Once the initial launch is over they will obviously release more boxes and open more servers as required.

This is probably another reason for UK people like me not being able to log onto USA servers apart from Vivendi being nasty over here.

I just tried to pre-order a copy at Gamestop, and they told me they hit their limit quite awhile ago. The only way I'd be able to get a copy through them is if by some luck they have another shipment come in, and I show up at the right time..
More to point though, I don't think there is any need to worry about server stability. The open beta was supposedly for stressing out the servers, to determine how well their code works, and what the player limit per server should be.. I'd be more concerned about trying to complete "kill x mob" quests at the start when there is 50 other people trying to kill the same things.
As for the character wipe, personally I think its a good thing. Seeing as the highest level character I played was only lvl 21, on a pvp server I don't like the idea of starting that far behind. Another good thing about the wipe is that I will have a chance to meet the players who know how to powerlevel, seeing as theyve been closed beta testing the whole time.

Did you honestly think that they'd allow you to keep you characters when retail hit stores? Theres a very blurry line between that kind of optimism and stupidity.

There may be some problems, but I don't foresee anything showstopping. Probably the worst thing would be login server issues, as these tend to bog down a bit. Still, OB was relatively smooth, all things considered. Bottom line is, if you enjoyed the game as much as most people did, you'd wait anyways. You have the box sitting at home and the game installed on your system. I doubt if you'd give up at that point after having waited for so long just to buy the game.

I'm going to head over to the Fry's event to see what's up. There may be a long line, but at least they should have a copy of the game. Or maybe they won't because that store will sell out due to the event? image

I don't know.  It was really bad if you happened to be on one of the earlier servers activated.  I was on Test Server 5 and it was horrid lag and constant server crashing.  I only started there because several friends were there.  Then I switched to server 40 and I never had a "Crash" again.  I have pre-ordered the game, but intend to give it  a week to wait for the hordes of start-up people to get out of the newbie zones and then will pick a low to average population server to try.  Cheers 8)

You aren't actually comparing the release of Diablo to World of Warcraft, are you?

It wouldn't surprise me if there were problems with the servers at release, but it wouldn't surprise if their wasn't. I didn't have a big problem with lag, but maybe I didn't log on the right times. I have heard that Blizzard was running a debug program that was taking up 50% of the processing power. That may explain a lot. I don't have that much of a concern. I'm actually expecting the release of WoW to go off smoothly. Afterall, Blizzard has been working on this game for a long time and has been running betas for the last 1/2 year. Of course we will know more on Tuesday.

I've subscribed to several MMORPG's in the past few years and most of them have had problems at launch. It's possible that something can go wrong but the last few days of beta were very smooth. Of course, that really doesn't matter when it comes to the day of launch.

I think we should all be patient. If there are problems, they'll iron them out quickly. As beta's go, WoW has been a nice surprise. I thought City of Heroes did a great job in beta too. Maybe these companies are learning not to send out beta for retail as we saw with Star Wars Galaxies and a few other games.

  • GumbyXGumbyX Member Posts: 42

How can anyone say that open beta was perfect?  There were crashes every day on a lot of servers, sometimes multiple crashes per day.  The forums crashed every time this happened as well.  Test 5 even crashed itself 2 mins into coming back up from a crash!  Whatever you are on, pass that sctuff right over!

It is true that there will be more server hardware to handle the load at launch, but I highly doubt it's going to be a flawless launch.

  • GalahedeGalahede Member Posts: 24

I wouldn't say it was a perfect beta, but it went pretty smoothly. I didn't experience any major bugs. The lag was completely gone the last couple of days. The gameplay was smooth and uneventful as beta's go. I did experience a server crash twice the last day. But it is beta.

In comparison, the beta for SWG was horrendous. Bugs were everywhere. Lag was terrible. Game would crash and freeze often. The game just wasn't ready for retail.

Compare that with WoW. WoW was pretty smooth for the last days of beta. But that was my experience. Yours may have been different.

That's because they were on used servers, they all tried to get them all on a few servers whereas Blizzard has said that they are totally wiped and ready. I doubt there is anything to worry about.. And to Orcc -- It's kinda sad that they cancelled Earth & Beyond but left that crap-shit Sims Online on..

Blizzard was stressing the servers out through items DB. There was no lag on chat so you could see taht it wasn't the whole server.

tackleburry :) your way too intelligent :) waiting 1 week...

will you be able to wait? ;)

beside this, the lag was related to the objects database (looting, crafting etc)

the game itself (if you did not loot) had no lag at all

ping when nobody is on server: 89 ms (in canada, at 8 in morning)

ping in peek hours: 219 ms (after 7 pm)

ping when looting an object: 1 to 120 seconds :(

so this "lootlag" may be only a problem with database server

i also must admit there was some lag beside this, when attacking monsters, but it was not frequent

Considering the preformance of the Techs on the WoW team its likely theyll have intial lag on the release. That said its also likely theyll get past it in a week or two. Come the last week of the OB I was no longer server lagging, nor was I loot lagging. All in all not much to worry about. Oh a note on my feelings about the game. I did notice a large amount of the younger player base that enjoyed WoW Rts series. There antics could get rather annoying. This said I also noticed alot of hardore rpers like myself enjoyed the more stylized Norse Creation Mythology. The simplistic emotinal overtures allowed for some dramatic exchanges of thought I truly enjoyed. That is after I joined a Rper guild. I wouldnt recommend Rping even on a Rp server in the open. In anycase Ill be playing WoW. Im still evaluating Eq2 and a few other Mmo's at the moment. We'll see how they pan out.
