Pop? Soda? Coke? What do you call it?

SabiancymSabiancym Member UncommonPosts: 3,150

I was having an argument with a friend from down south about what to call carbonated beverages. I'm from Chicago and I have and always will call it pop.  It's what everyone around here calls it.  I've heard people from the west call it soda which sounds a bit too proper.

Then there's the south where it is often refered to as just coke.  All pop is coke in some areas down there.  In my mind, if you ask for a coke, you are either getting the brand name coca-cola or you are getting told that they only have pepsi.

Here's a map

So what do you call it?

Wisconsin:  Will use whatever I feel like at the time.

We also call  water fountains(that you drink from) bubblers.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I really like the word Pop but Soda is fine too. It's kind of annoying though when people call other soda beverages such as 7up , orange crush , sprite etc as Coke.

I don't think I've used either pop or soda in a long time.  Usually I just reffer to whatever it is that I want by it's name.  If I want a Coke I ask for a coke, or a Root Beer, or a Pepsi, or a 7up... you get the point.  Then again I tend not to drink much of it anymore so maybe that has something to do with it... and I'm up here in Canada by the way.

    California - soda

I don't know why i had to edit this...I accidentally wrote that I call it pop...weird.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

Being from the South I use "Cokes" to generalize soda.  If I'm going to get something, I call it by the name though.  Albeit, I don't drink them anymore so I rarely use either.

I am from Texas and I call it a "soda pop" or " junk food" . Generally call each type of soda pop by it's name. A Dr. Pepper is a Dr. Pepper and a Coke is a Coke.

I am from NC but I never call it coke.

I do use the terms, soda, soda pop and soft drink, though

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

north carolina, and it's not so much as referring to all soda as "coke" but merely by it's actual name "hey i want a mt. dew, pepsi, coke, sun drop (local drink that's better than any other soda in the world)".   since coke is the most popular soft drink, it gets asked for the most, and thus when the argument of "pop or soda" comes up, we say "just call it coke".

when i was in aircrew candidate school we asked one of our instructors to settle the argument once and for all, so according to SSGT Cantrell, USMC: "IT'S COKE G** DAMMIT!"

To be honest I, as a guy from Sweden, would, if I ever spoke about it in English, say soda simply because I've always heard it being referred to as that. Never ever heard, or read, anyone calling it pop or coke previously to this post and even so I'm a fairly frequent reader of English texts.
