Hello out there at MMORPG.com!
I've been having the worst luck finding an MMORPG that my girlfriend and I will both enjoy enough so that we can play together. She really likes the fantasy stuff and cute games, and nothing too complex... while I'll play just about anything.
Also... it has to be free to play and free to downlload. That's another big rule for us. haha.
So, can anyone give me some good suggestions?

Simple game... "Cute"... Free to download and play... Ragnarok Online, Secret of the Solstice, or any of the other Korean "anime" games come to mind.
Hey, You could try Mabinogi/perfectworld/Flyff/Ragnarok 2 P serv all free

Try 9dragons or atlantica online
Tenbwen
SotS looks a lot like RagO, and I've played RagO before... it's actually very good.
And when you say "Korean anime games", do you think you can give me some more examples? Also, anything in 3D that would be good?
Oddly enough, she seems to love Rappelz although we haven't had time to both get into it yet. I'm just making sure we have other options for when Rappelz gets a little too complicated (because of overbreeding).
We actually got into Perfect World and liked it for a while, but she didn't like how long it took to run anywhere you needed to get to that didn't have teleportation options. We also tried their new game, Ether Saga. We're still forming opinions on it, since it plays a little too easily... as if it was made for much younger audiences (like, you can practically hold down a skill button and it will just reuse itself after a 1 second cast over and over again).

Well... There is ROSE online... Although I don't know if they are free to play yet. It is made by Gravity though, which is the same company that makes Ragnarok Online. There is also, as someone meantioned, FlyFF in that same kind of catagory.
You get what you pay for.
Obviously any game has to have some form of income, devs have to pay the bills too. "Free" just means you pay in other ways or you play something inferior someone is learning to program on. It's like having golf as your hobby and using toy equipment....you may enjoy the first few days, but will outgrow your equipement quickly. So I'm going to go ahead and offer LotRO as a choice for you since it is the least expensive of the top-notch premium games out there, find a founder to send you a free trial and it's very affordable after that.

ROSE just became free to play recently, and I'm currently testing it, along with Luna Online's Closed beta testing. I'll give Maginobi a shot too, since it looks promising. I played Flyff once... and didn't really like it. I don't quite remember why either. =/
I just wish she wasn't so damned picky =_=
Free = uneven, as in, freeloaders have a harder time than people that actually invest money into the game. Also being "free" is often an excuse to slack a bit in quality. But then again, i played a few ot that kind of games myself, and understand the feeling of not wanting to invest too much money in a game. Personally, i play Guild Wars with my girlfriend, and today the complete collection is a true bargain. It is casual-friendly, not too complex, but then again, i can't exactly classify it as "cute", but nevertheless... i'd still recommend it as an option.
As far as free games go, if that is a very strict rule, if i wasn't playing Guild Wars i'd still probably be in Rappelz, as mentioned, or perhaps Sword of the New World.
I'm surprised no one suggested Runes of Magic yet.......Its f2P and is casual friendly....I thought it was alot better than PWI......Atlantica is a good choice also for a free game.
I agree with the you get what you pay for. If you want to stick around a game, play WoW or LOTRO. Your GF will pick it up easily and it will last you much much longer than crap like Rappelz. Fyi, me and my old gf started with Rappelz. Was fun for a few days, then it was just a huge huge grind.
Yeah he speaks truth.
If your girlffriend wants a pve oriented game that is very similar in style to wow with somewhat ok graphics, try runes of magic. It has a cash shop, but is free to play and free to download. It does have exp penalty for dying, but they might have softened it up since I played the CB.
If you'd like to try something else entirely, you can try Twelvesky2. It goes into Open beta next week, on thursday. The game is f2p and free to download. It gives you pve grind, with quests, is relatively simple to grasp and definately duo friendly. It gives you the option to join battlegrounds for pvp, but isnt a pk or ffa pvp game. You will never have to pvp if youre set on not to. And you can pvp if you chose by going to the zones that allow for pvp ( or battlegrounds in this case). Your gf can then safely pve with you, and if you want more of a challenge you can head into pvp on your own or together. The look of the game is decent and its got the cutesy asian pet stuff going for it.
Another note on f2p and the cash shop. In Twelvesky you can usually purchase the cashshop items with in game currency from other players as most of the items are not bind on aquire. Which means, that you wont necessarily be left behind item wise as is the case in many other games including Runes of magic.
Heh, just be glad you have a girlfriend/female/woman that will actually play games with you...its quite rare!
If it's not a disadvantage in items, it's in game currency, it boils down to the same. Of course it's still possible to be on par with people that invest money, but the tradeoff is investing much more time, which strips away the casual and simplicity aspects. It's fine if you are willing to/can invest that sort of time, but the OP mentioned "not too complex". Of course, i might be mistaking that with casual? Maybe some clarification would be in order.
Give Atlantica Online a shot. I tried it because I love turn bases games and now I'm totally hooked. I haven't enjoyed any mmo like this in a very long time. The pvp and pve are alot of fun and each fight is completely different. You can have up to eight mercenaries plus your main character and even fighting the same mobs is different each time. There's more strategy involved than you average button mashing mmo. I've even used their cash shop, something I said I would never ever do in a free mmo. Their shop doesn't really make the game unbalanced like most of them do, it just makes life easier.
There's alot of players and the game is very polished for a f2p - or even a p2p mmo for that matter. They're constantly adding new content and updating old content. There's more players in it than any other free mmo I've played. Five servers with new servers on the way is alot for a free mmo. Heck, there seems to be more players than alot of the "Normal subscription based" games I've played.
I tried this game out of boredom thinking it might be fun for a few weeks and now I play it full time. It's the perfect game for me. Give it a shot and see. Atlantica Online is going to change how companies go about making free to play mmo's in America.

when I say "not too complex" I mean a game that doesn't require serious strategy for some kind of crazy build for a character to fully enjoy the game's content. And there's no way that I'm going to expose her to the poison that is World of Warcraft. She's heard my personal experiences of that game, and it's enough to keep her miles away from it.
Sword of the New World looks absolutely gorgeous. I'm going to look into that one as well, since the "3 character control" system sounds really great.
I'll be trying a lot of these and hopefully we'll find one that suits us both equally. Thank you all for your time.
And you're right, a girl gamer is somewhat rare these days. But the odd thing about her is, she simply LOVES FPS games... even if she does suck at them a little (I'm guessing she'd be better with a mouse rather than a Xbox360 controller... that's a test in progress). She's a closet gamer, and I'm hoping to get her out of there and enjoy the good stuff. =D
If you want something sickeningly cute and uncomplicated for your girlfriend, you might try Ether Saga Online. I can't vouch for the quality of the gameplay long term, since I haven't played it (not into that cutesy stuff), but it should satisfy her cute fantasy requirements, and you can autowalk to complete quests.
wizard101..
its not free.. but its cheaper than dirt.
or fiesta.

Twelvesky has a pretty straightforward character building process. And there is no raiding to speak off outside pvp. You can basically with a little effort and time and devotion become very powerfull in your own right, without depending on a ton of other people. Your faction matters as far as pvp goes, but when it becomes important, you will allready have felt that you controll your characters power level much more than you would in pve/raid oriented games. World random epics, world random (lvl bracketed rares ) and player enchanted augmented equipment. It has no crafting at all. But it has a certain something else which makes it slightly better than other f2ps Ive played. The community is also very good, I enjoy it, Im female... Im pretty demanding when it comes to f2p, mostly having catered to p2p, but twelvesky and initially Requiem right when it came out, really made me consider that there is good fun to be had in some of the titles
I didnt really point out the cash shop thing for any other reason than to explain how its different from other cash shops. Im completely aware of drawbacks with regards to f2p, but I dont have a money tree and therefor I dont expect the f2p developers to have them either, recognising that their income must come from somewhere. In twelvesky currency is easy to come by. Coveted and rare items not so much. Trading these for items like them that you need is where its at. Therefor, its a mixture of random luck, time invested and real money spent that gets you what you want. In equal meassure. I believe that f2p games have a place in the mmo world of today, and gives people with different budgets access to many different games rather than being restricted to playing 1 or 2 p2p. I dont see it hurting the p2p communities and I take the good and the bad that comes with the f2p structure without whining about it. It is what it is. If you dont like it, steer clear, but crusade about it, thats just baffling. The OP specifically stated he was looking for f2p.
I would say from a girls perspective I have enjoyed twelvesky2 the most out of any f2p title, and it probably ranks in my overall top 5 in the last decade from all mainstream titles and smaller ones too. ( and no I dont know entirely why it is so addictive and fun. I think in large part it is because I dont have to group if I dont want to _without_ trading character strength with that choice, and that pvp is fun in this format)
Yup, I was about to suggest this. Its a great game and very cute. The first few zones are free so its worth checking out.

Wizard101 or Fiesta? I've tried Fiesta before, seems very basic and cute.
I'd say wait a month (if that) and do FreeRealms when its released.
From what I've seen of the beta, it looks like it would fit the bill quite nicely (fantasy, cute, easy, free)
It's very polished already, and quite addictive in that 'just one more level/quest/kill' sort of way.
Well cute would either be trickster online or ragnorak, now they have a unique style of graphics even though there not that great but the sprites rock in ragnorak and you have more freedom the char building can be complex you get to choose your stats and skills and etc, you will need to read up on it, you change jobs and so on. The free server is valkyrie but it is full of bots give it a try if you like it get the premium you get exp rate increase among other things and no bots. If you get the premium I suggest loki it is the medium populated one but much more friendly im told then the others. Oh and this game has tons of classes just fyi.
Trickster is free and allot of people like it, it was a bit to cutsy for me, and I just did not like the world, there is also lord of the rings online the game is fun the quests are well done for the most part the classes are fun and unique but it can be time consuming more so then wow, but it really isnt complex it is quite simple, and you need a good computer to run that game.
Everquest 2 you will need a really good computer to run it right, it has a large variety of races and classes and I mean allot, but this game is way more time consuming anyone can play it casually though and the crafting is probably the most complex out of all these and time consuming, but it has lots of cutsy stuff like being able to use the fae and etc, very rich in fantasy and it is a fun game but if you dont mind the time consumption and can play casually then give it a whirl. I am just suggestion this because I have seen allot of casuals being able to play this game with no problems.
Other then that I suggest hitting the gamelist and sort it by ranking and you should find more cutsy games for you and your women.
I just read something about her liking fps games there are a few online fps games right now, but if your looking for a mmorpg then I highly recommend city of heroes and villians, the villians side was better before I quit, but it might have changed now the only issue is the mission areas can look to similar to each other, but there is a decent variety of story archs and areas to fight in.
The customization can be complex only if you focus to much on it, same goes for inventions anyways this game has the best character creater I have ever seen so much freedom, you even get an area to write your own hero or villian story, anyways the combat is fast paced espically in teams and teams are very quick and easy to pick up in fact more then any game I have played. She can be a blaster and pick assault rifle and devices as secondary as primary I forgot what the villans side is called it is a bit different. Coh/Cov is probably the most casual friendly mmorpg out as well anyways they usually have free trials give it a shot, oh and the community is excellent not perfect but excellent.
Guild wars is also something to look into but the community really sucks so may not interest you.
