Beta Opens Today

highbornhighborn Disciple StaffMember Posts: 64

Hi Everyone

I know everyone is anxious to get in the game and try it out.  The Beta will open today, in just a few hours.  For future referene we have people working on the game in Europe, Chicago, and San Francsico.  I am the one that makes the decision of when to open the beta, and I am in San Francisco (PST).

What we are doing now is installing some monitoring software, updating the game with final changes that include:

1. Updates to hair and skin colors.

2. Some messages to help guide you through the game.

3. fixing some small errors around spars and battles.

This has all been done.  its uploading now, which will take about an hour. Then we will test everything oursleves for 30-60 minutes, and then we will open it up to all beta testers.  Thanks for your patience, we are very close!

Yes, you should be able to make a total of 5.  All testers will have access to premium account benefits for the duration of testing.  After the beta (general release), free players will only have access to one character slot, premium members will have access to 5.

At the risk of sounding like a newbie, is this open or closed beta.  I gather from reading the posts it sounds like closed.

It must be true, I read it on the internet!

Give them a chance... there's always room for Unexpected events that brings delays. Would be nice to have a follow up though to know where they are at.

Unexpected events is no exuse, those always happen. The trick is to be prepared from them and that's what differentiates professionals from noobs.

This is actualy very much untreu. While you can anticipate a lot, still making a game/website is hard and a lot of unexpected events can arrise of with some might not even be your mistake (Server issues, ISP problems, hardware faults). Even WoW, WaR and all those hotshot companies have to extend there downtimes.

Was it not SoE (And yes they are professionals regardless of your personal standing toward them) that delete a whole database by accident for EQII. Having an extreamly long downtime duo to that and all charater where rolled back to an older time when the database last backed up?

So either there are not professionals or no-ones bar you knows about such a trick to anticipate everything. Hell even docters are not capible of anticipating everything. Even rockets drop down from the sky becouse some idiots did not comunicated well and coded something wrong (Yes Ladies and gentleman, that is what we TEST!!!). So really you have no idea what you are talking about.

Are you seriously comparing MMO's to brain surgery and launching a rocket to the moon? Hahahahaha.. You know I think those two might be a tad more difficult to pull off than some class-B browser MMO..

And this is not some mundane weekly update.. it's understandable that those fail. We are talking about beta LAUNCH here. If they cannot even launch on time, and totally go silent without giving us any update on situation.. what does that tell you about the future of this game?

For me it tells this game is going to FAIL.

Well... then I assume that if I were your Boss and you had a deadline to give me a completed task and that you go beyond that deadline, I could call you a noob and fire you pronto. You would of course be OK with that and think "Yeah...I'm a total noob and deserved to be fired, It was sooo unprofessional of me" Then move on and find yourself another job.

Well if I worked on the most important account of our firm and on the day of the big presentation, I would walk into the presentation room with NOTHING, saying my computer broke so I couldn't write anything.. then yeah, you should fire me and I would think "Yeah.. I'm a total noob" and I would start a new career in McDonald's.

Sure there are some situations that no person in the world can anticipate. Like hurricane or something. But in a situation like that it's importat for devs to COMMUNICATE with the community, not just go silent like these guys have.

Your setting up a Stawman arguement. Thats totally irrelivant. Hes got better things to do than appease the 5 people on these forums who are anxious and upset.

First of all it's stRaw man argument. Secondly I'm not doing that. Do you even know what it means or did you just hear someone use those words in another thread?

If he's too busy to write 1 paragraph post to loyal fans who are waiting for the game, no matter how many there are, what does that tell you about this company?

    Hello Everyone

First of all, I am sorry this is taking a little longer than expected.  We will NOT be pushing beta back to tomorrow or anything like that.

    Here is the issue:

All of our animation files are not stored on a normal server.  They are hosted by a global CDN with nodes all over the world.  It takes about an hour for these nodes to populate with our animations because of the caching mechanism they use.  Everything is ready, and we could let you in now, but depending on your location in the country, you may not see any animations!  That would suck!

Why didn't we think of this before?

We did.  The problem is that in our final testing we had a few small animation glitches, and we had to replace a bunch of our .swf files.  We did that, and now we are simply just waiting, like you are :)

We have waited on this process many times before, and it takes about an hour.  My best guess is in about 30 minutes we will be ready to rock!

Another note:  This is a closed beta.  You will see bugs.  Classes will have balance issues.  This is why we need you, and your help.  Please provide as much feedback as you can.

Thanks for your pateience, and I will see you inside shortly.  My name in the game is: GMTobias.

    Thanks!

I still think you are being too harsh for the them missing the deadline for a few hours.

But I do agree about Communication though, they just posted I very good summary of what is happening but it would have been appreciated if it had been posted a little before they reached the announced deadline.

But I believe that Later is better than Never :)  (not too often though)

One thing I do not understand, why use cached servers with a webgame... your maintenance will take longer due to this. :(

You make a comparison between expirienced proffesionals and new companies (You call them noobs), yet I can not use the rocked launching (with was a salitilite) as comparison. I mean if it was real rocket sience that failed I would agree with you, but they forgot to catch an exeption. That small rookie mistake costed millions. How would it then be so odd that a smaller company makes mistakes.
