The title says it all. Most Players simply don't take advantage of the Chatbox. Developers put in game mechanics to entertain, but, the true enterainment value of a MMO lies literally in the hands of the players. I bet most of you whiners are guilty of using the Chatbox for nothing other than l33tSpeak. I would also wager that you are currently wondering what I mean by `using the Chatbox for other than L33tSpeak...`
Ok, its only fair that I give you a hint:

I think you're going to have to be a little more specific about who exactly is the target of your rant. "Whiners" doesn't really cut these days as people who want companies to put a little more effort into non-combat aspects of world creation are deemed "whiners". People that lodge legitimate critiques on games are labeled "whiners". In fact, for a large portion of the MMO community, it's become popular to label anyone who doesn't agree with your every opinion a "whiner".
So, for clarity's sake, please s-plain who exactly you are pointing at.

I think "leetspeak" has finally joined the likes of other utterly annoying and thankfully short lived fads such as "ebonics".
I don't see a lot of Leetspeak these days, but then I have a lot of filters that shield me from the half-wits that try to use it. Just by filtering out the letters (I won't stoop to calling it a word) "plz" I have filtered out around 280 messages in the chat box, lately. Add the other filters in, and that's a world of crap I don't have to read.
What grates on me is "TextSpeak", whereby people use the chatbox as if it was a moblie phone. If someone can't be bothered to type properly to me, they don't get a reply. I've added most TextSpeak terminology to the filters I use, too, so that's even more dimwits I don't have to reply to.
A good rule of thumb in mmorpgs is if they use Leetspeak or TextSpeak, they're too stupid to merit a reply, and WAY too stupid to group with.
I could enjoy mmorpg's ive people used the chatbox at all..
In most games i've played lately their is little to no social interaction, even in groups, its usually just /invite, kill a mob, and then disband without a word
Individuals that go around using l33tspeak in the games I play are quickly /reported and /ignored by most of the community.
I don't see many of them around, and they don't tend to stay for very long.

Is there a name for whatever the hell is wrong with you?
Seriously, what the hell are you talking about?
no U!
The only whiner I see is you. As long as we do not violate either the CoC, ToS , or the EULA, we can use the chat box for what ever we want to. If you dont like seein 1337 speak move to a RP server.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
I can't say anything on the matter except that whenever I am playing a game, I never see anyone typing anything in general chat anymore. Even the last time I played WoW, the famous Barrens chat is no more, at least on the five servers I was on.
Oh how I wish that this "problem" was truly the biggest issue with MMO's these days.....
Personally, I defend the comic potential of l33tspeek. It's just way funnier than RPing.
That you take it so seriously is probably an indication that you need to get out of the house more.

I agree.
I didn't see a terrible amount of 1337 speak in WoW when I played. When I talked with my guild, the majority of us typed in plain English. We used lol, brb and many wow-specific abbreviations and acronyms but no one ever spoke completely in short-hand. I personally make an attempt to not only type in plain English but also spell correctly and use correct grammar (I'm not saying that I don't ever misspell things, believe me I do, but I at least TRY to get it right). The lack of 1337 speak doesn't automatically mean a more meaningful game experience though, it's much more complicated than that.
Agreed.
I think graphics have a lot to blaim. Good graphics mean there's no need for players to even try making it immersive - as they believe the game already does that for them.
Think about text based MUDs/MUSHs - they were always full of great RP, why? Because they had no graphics, and the only way to truly immerse yourself is to play your character properly. Looking back, UO used to have some fantastic RP going on - yes, there were loads of 133+ers, but large guilds like the Guardsman Militia were absolutely awesome when it came to dedicated RP and enjoyed every aspect of the game the way the creators intended them to be enjoyed. Again, UO had pretty dire graphics - but I think that helped.
I also think the heavy focus on combat has an effect - perhaps an MMO focussing more heavily on player interaction with less combat would be a haven for RP? But then, I know 'SEED' tried something similar and died horribly - it wasn't a bad idea, players just weren't ready for a game with no fighting.
Ebonics is not a fad. Ebonics is a term used to describe the language used by north american people of African ancestry.
The term "Ebonics" has been floating around for over 30 years and is still alive today. Just give a listen to 50 cent, Kanye West, Allen Iverson and the Artist P-Diddy (formerly known as Puff Daddy).
