BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT® MEDIA ALERT
IRVINE, Calif. - November 24, 2004 - Blizzard Entertainment® today announced that World of Warcraft® has become an instant success, achieving epic sales figures in less than 24 hours. Launched Tuesday, November 23rd, the company's subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) sold-through to consumers an estimated 250,000* copies of the game. At retailers across the country, players lined up for blocks at midnight to purchase the game, which sold out in many stores nationwide after only one day on store shelves.
In just the first day alone, over 200,000 players created World of Warcraft accounts, and over 100,000 were already playing the game concurrently as of 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday. The account-creation and concurrent-user populations are both record numbers for a MMORPG on its first day of launch, making World of Warcraft the fastest-growing online game in history. World of Warcraft is expected to continue to shatter records and achieve a record-setting week-one population in the days ahead. With dozens of World of Warcraft servers already filled to capacity, Blizzard is deploying additional servers rapidly to match the growing player base.
"We had a lot of confidence in World of Warcraft, but the success on day one far exceeded our expectations," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We are extremely happy that players are enjoying our game, and we are doing everything we can to meet the demand and maintain a fun and smooth game experience for everyone playing."
Retailers across North America, including Wal-Mart, EB, GameStop, and others are reporting that hundreds of their stores have sold out of World of Warcraft due to the demand. If consumers have not yet purchased their copy of World of Warcraft, they are advised to call ahead to make sure their store has copies still in stock.
"World of Warcraft has once again shown that Blizzard consistently delivers the best games in the industry," said Robert McKenzie, vice president of merchandising at GameStop. "It sold better than any other PC game this year - in fact, World of Warcraft enjoyed the best day-one sell-through GameStop has ever seen on a PC title!"
Blizzard Entertainment and its retail partners are expecting all remaining supplies of World of Warcraft to sell out soon. Meanwhile, the company is working diligently to increase server capacity to accommodate the growing number of players connecting to the game. As the additional servers are brought online and proven stable, additional copies of World of Warcraft will be made available at retail. Blizzard will announce the availability of those additional games as soon as they are on retail shelves.

great for blizzard, good luck.
Please don't start with the wars between EQ2 and WoW. Its seriously pointless now, let bygones be bygones.

actually i could care less about which one is better. There are some important facts here.
Sony did over 100k copies in a day. CoH has 300k subscribers, SWG still has 200k+ subscribers.
WoW has sold 250k + in one day with 200k subscribers.
Frankly this is fantastic news for all of us who enjoy these games. We are talking Millions of dollars here, subscriptions per month grossing 200k * $14 = $2.8 MILLION per month per company in addition to the initial sales.
Those numbers are going to have poeple taking a BIG look at this industry and working ever harder for our dollars. This means, better games, more innovations and better online experiences.
I'm rejoicing for both WoW and EQ2, I can only speculate what lies in the future but 5 years from now I bet you're going to see games that just blow your minds.
Yes it is spectacular but how many people will stick with WoW in the next few years. We will soon see how much staying power it has.

Was a few years ago.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

Gratz blizzard but what effect has this on a non blizzard employee aka the the gamer?
None.If a game has 40k subscribers and 4 packed servers it is still the same as a game with 500k subs and 50 packed server as far as i am concerned since i am yet to buy stocks in any mmorpg makig company.
Lineage and lineage 2 probably hold the record worldwide if we are talking about number of subs.
Well those number are very good for them, it does show that there was alot of hype and a large number of people that followed WoW and where just waiting to get into the game.
But then thats also because it was a single player game and a board game so it had alot to build on as far as a fan base goes.
I can see this game doing well, I personally dont play it but from what I have seen and heard I can see this game being one that people will stick with as they did and still do with EQ1.
I dont play either WoW or EQ2 at the moment, as my video card cant run EQ2 and I just dont have the time this year to devote to any real MMO at least not till after XMas. I can say though I know alot of people playing WoW and they have all had good things to say so far so Blizzard must have done something right, might you the same can be said for EQ2 so all in all both games are great.
Who really cares what game is the best or biggest, I will probably end up trying both eventually when time permits but until then who knows what I will think is better for me. Yes ME, each game draws in people for different reasons and thats what makes the game good, we all play different games because thats what we like not because its the best so called game out there.
I do think though that WoW will be good maybe even better as Blizzard has always tried to put out quality games first, and I have enjoyed thier games that I have played with little to no problems. So lets hope they put that same effort into WoW and it will be great.
Ive played both and there are obvious flaws to both. Although the competition this little battle is causing will only make the games better and hopefully cheaper.
MoooOOOoooo!
So... WoW has 250k+ subscribers and there were 500 000 in OB, so wheres the other 250k? I would guess no more than 50k would be in Europe, does that mean 200k people played OB and aren't going for retail? Or do you tihnk theyre just waiting for the servers to be sorted out?
thats great im happy for blizzard, judging by the forums at WoW thats 250k people i dont have to worry about going over too eq2 and ruining a good game.. thank you blizzard..

Gratz to Blizzard on there first mmorpg and a great one!
I played OB and didn't buy the game. I was leaning more toward EQ2, and wanted to wait and try that one first. I am considering leaving EQ2, but this hasn't translated yet in me buying WOW. I am not burning another $50 of my money on a game until I think deep and hard on it. I also know people who wanted to buy WOW and it was sold out or are just waiting on servers to become stable. I figure in the next 3 months, the numbers will go down and up as old players leave after trial and new people come in. It will stabilize, but it is popular game and will be around for a while. I know some people who bought the Collector's edition and want to play the game mostly because of the 'panda'....yes...'panda' Panda WoW > EQ2 Dragon
There are people that dont have money to get the game..or maby most people that played the OB are waiting to see what others say about retail before they go out and get it (like me)
I for one, played open beta. but my life is hecktic right now with christmas so close, I figure Ill get wow sometime in January, I love the game, but I have no time for it.
and yes, those are crazy amazing numbers
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Congratulations, Blizzard!
All of the games they have released thus far have been superb.... however.. something troubles me about titles like AO, EvE etc. that are hardly inferior, but have << subscriber numbers: AO has never had >= 50k subscribers.. although it's content (as an aggregate) is equivalent to that WoW.. (and relative to it's time, it was actually of superior quality).
I impute this mainly to AO's crappy publisher, which just goes to show you that it isn't necessarily the game that makes the profit....
Seems like AO is on it's way out (given that it has already started to implement player towns etc.)...
Please don't misinterpret this as a flame: I am actually an avid WoW player (well for the past 2 days I have been having the most fun I have ever had in a mmorpg)
It's just that other quality products aren't given a chance, because they never get the opportunity to become known.

mmm maybe 500k registered n 250k active...
mmm bah.. who cares..
FFXI does NOT have over 1 million players/users/subscribers. It has over 1 million characters. Players pay for each character they create. Is FFXI successful? Yes. But it has more like roughly 200k accounts/players/subscribers.
Need a more blatant example? In games like EQ, DAoC, and just about all other MMORPGs, each player gets/makes/can have 2,4,8,12+ characters per account. Those games do NOT count how many characters each player has. Unlike FFXI.
In EQ I have 5 characters. But SONY counts it as one account. If I were playing FFXI, and I had 5 characters, they would count it as 5 accounts.
