I look foward to seeing what they ripoff come up with.

the jealousy hate runs deep in this one.. MMMmmm

Jealousy of what? WoW is a fine game, and they have does great things. But lets not claim the IP was holy original shall we.

I keep forgetting that i need to put an entire disclaimer on my life, and views. Or the posting physics will call me out!

I am waiting for you or some one else to chime in with the classic yet 100% unfounded "Warcraft was ment to be Warhammer but GW decided to cancel" or the even funnier "starcraft was ment to be Warhammer 40k"

Bottom line, Warcraft and starcraft play on the classic races and settings that all sci-fi and fantasy games, books and stories have always played on... Warhammer/40k created nothing original or can claim to be original in anyway... just as WoW/SC cannot.. its the story and characters that make a game great and Blizzard are masters at that.

You had me right up until the story part. I played WOW for quite awhile...did i miss the lore?

See that yellow part up there?  Funny how some of you folks leave that out of the argument.  Did WoW steal ideas? Of course they did!  Why aren't they sued left and right for stealing ideas?  Probably because the people that made up orcs, demons, elves, etc etc are LONG DEAD.  These ideas have been around forever in games and books and such.  To whine about Blizz using ideas from other games then not acknowleding that those games themselves did the same thing is pretty weak at best.

i think you dont get it.

you can go to the opera to hear Verdi's La Traviata. at the end, people can be commenting about how nice performance they pulled, and agree this orchestra did better than all other previous ones the heard

only the idiots will praise the orchestra director for "composing" such masterpiece

also, there's a difference between e.x the "vampire" concept and the "white wolf vampire" concept. If you directly clone everything from ruleset to weaknesses/strengths to social aspects to subdivisions to clans, you are getting into the dangerous land of RIPOFF.population:Blizzard

thats exactly what (...)crafts did to war(...). its not your typical sci-fi/fantasy generic setting. the similarities in all aspects are plenty and obvious, no matter how much you rephrase the background history in the cutscenes

Again, of course they are similar!  I still have to say, if it was a blatant theft of ideas, IP, whatever, there would have been major court action over it, this is in America after all.

Zarhym told the forums that: "We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far. We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this."
So, as it stands right now, it appears as though Blizzard is going to stray away from their tested and true franchises and broaden their scope with something new.

Old news is old.  This was confirmed long before this.  I seen a video about 6+ months ago stating this. SStraight from a dev's lips.

Played the game for two years and didnt notice much of a story at all until WOTLK. As for the novels i could be wrong but would bet the majority if not all came after the game.

Blizzard did changes to the concepts, its safe to assume that such changes were enough for the law but not for those fond of both IPs

neither you nor me know the law that governs such things.you could design an assasin character by a model remarkably similar to Vin Diesel but with shrot hair instead of bald, made him use dual daggers instead of only one ,name him Taddick instead of Riddick, and have handshine instead of eyeshine

For all we know,IP laws might not apply there.

would that character be your "generic "assasin?

As a former WoW player (2.5 years ) I would just like to say that :

I hope they try and move from their current situation. (Ezmode and watered down for noob catering) I hope they realise this and develop a game that resembles the things that most of us in these forums actually want. Although this is likley to happen it would be pretty awesome. :)

I suggest you play the RTS games, yes the books didin't arrive until after the first WC game in 1994, but theres a rich history if you care to look, playing WoW for  2 years realy doesn't cut it.  Just as I know jack about the WH lore, from what I have picked up its a very shallow and basic lore but thats my opinion from my limited experience... I cannot name a single key character in WH but loads and their history in WC.

Dont count on it. Blizzard's philosophy is to bring online gaming to the masses, and the only way to do that is to make it accessible to the average gamer. You can be sure there wont be anything restricted to people who play more than others, and that all of their content will be developped with the intent of having all of the subscribers experience it.

That being said, its not necessarly a bad thing. The more MMOs move away from requiring hours and hours in front of a computer to achieve anything, the better. Whats left to be determined is if the game will present a challenge and novelty of any kind, which is what seems to be lacking in WoW: running the same instance a thousand time for x item is not content(not arguing about hard modes because I support them), especially if the next expansion makes it completly obsolete.

The rules of Debate are really simple; once you have to stoop to insults instead of facts, logic, or reason to try and win your argument, you've lost.

    Why the hell would they?

Why make a high profile MMO for a handful of forum zombies?

Its currently only in the planning stages so Blizzard has several years to watch how the market will evolve. It will likely be an extension of whats relevant to the MMO genre in 2012.

I hate when people say "warcraft is a ripoff of warhammer" or "lotro is a ripoff of wow" or "XYZ is a ripoff of everquest".

    Seriously...

Everything is a "ripoff" of something.  Maybe every fantasy book/game should pay dungeons and dragons a royalty then.

And maybe people should sue DnD as they took 90% of thier monsters etc from mythology.

Really, theres nothing new under the sun, just different ways of viewing things.

I can some up with a creature out of my head like a "peanut with tentacle legs and one eye" and people would say Im ripping off a cyclops, mr.peanut, and an octopus.

Really unless Blizzard broke into the top secret warhammer mmo studio and stole blueprints and code it isnt a "ripoff" and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot as everything is influenced by something; music, movies, games, laws, language EVERYTHING!

  • XzenXzen Member UncommonPosts: 2,607

Blizzard's games are heavily influenced by GameWorkshop's Warhammer games. Get over it. Stop sticking your head in the sand if you don't want to believe it. It's true but there is nothing wrong with it.

I agree wtih you man, i think people trying to claim that warcraft online stole from warhammer universe is pretty stupid, it's like claiming that a game stole it's mechanics from a movie....or something considering warhammer came out after wow....

And no offense but I have studied the warhammer universe and I don't see any similarities between the two in question, and say lord of the rings, or c.s. lewis's books...so i mean if you really want to get nit picky, warhammer stole from conan.

You studied the warhammer universe and see no similarities?  really?

    WoW = Alliance vs horde

    Warhammer = Order vs destruction

WoW = Alliance has 3 races  vs horde has 3 races

Warhammer = order has 3 races vs destruction has 3 races.

    Come on man

Of course there is nothing wrong with it, i know all about how their IP's started, but is it really necessary to bring it up everytime a post with blizzards name in it is made?

If they actually stole something like people claim, they would have been sue'd already, if where their IP really mattered to the majority, they wouldn't have the fanbase they have.

If a company rips off most of their ideas from other games, and does it better than the said games, more power to them. I could care less where they get their ideas as long as its fun to me. Blizzard is known for taking ideas from other companies and doing it better than them, its not a big deal. Most of the games Blizzard takes from, took from games and IPs before them, its all recycled. Whatever the game is, at least you know it won't be rushed and will be polished unlike all the incomplete trash released the past two years, regardless if it suits your interest or not. I get sick of companies releasing half complete games with the intent to just patch it later, Blizzard will have enough money to actually finish their game.

To all the folks arguing WoW was a rip-off .: as far as I know the only truly original game ever made was PONG .And even that one ripped off the idea from tennis or table tennis .

If you look back when Warcraft first came out, and hell even after the second one, the lore almost went hand and hand with some of stories told in the Warhammer Army books (Codexs for 40k players).  Magic portals bringing for warriors for chaos (dark portal anyone?) fight against the Empire blah blah blah.  It wasn't till the 3rd Warcraft game that Blizzard began to really work on its own lore.  As you notice they began going down a different path.  Then they released WoW and began releasing the novels and comics.

My point is back in the beginning Warcraft look, and felt like a long campaign of Warhammer, which personally I was fine with since  Gameswork shop had yet to release a good pc game.  Everything about the first two games screamed, "Hey the creators love Warhammer, and we enjoyed its lore!" so they played with it to their own ends.  Which is FINE!

As for your comment  Warhammer has shallow lore, I can really tell you have no experience with gamesworkshop then.  Inside of each army book there are stories about your chosens races past, hereos, battles, and so forth.  Every year there are campaigns players all across the world that actually change the Warhammer (and 40k) worlds.   Also if you take 5 seconds and look up warhammer on amazon you'll find plenty of lore
