Who here is primarily a miner?

qwenidenqweniden Member Posts: 151

I think this is the path I want to take.  I got fed up with the tutorial and now just fly around mining ore.  Im not making much money but Im enjoying it.

Any advice for me from those who focus on minning?

Get EVEMON and make a plan to get into a hulk, buy modulated strip miners when you can, buy the skill books for only certain profitable high sec ore,  refinery skills are a must to skill up, drones are a must for dealing with rats in 0.7-.05 systems, skip mining drones as they are a waste. Start off with a Retriver, then work up to a Covetor, then go for the Hulk and follow the skills laid out in EVEMON. This should help you some with mining and definetly read The Complete Miners Guide.

I'm not sure if you could say that I'm primarily a miner, but I do mine a lot.  Not sure what advice to give, some of the best mining spots I get are from corpmates who do level 4 missions in highsec. Mined 6mil tritanium in about 3-4 hours.  It's not bad at all. I have my main in a hulk and my alt hauls for me.

On the contrary, mining drones are a must for any miner.

    I would advice you to:
    1) avoid quantity mining
    2) train up BS - they make the best ore miners until you get your hands on barges. Even then, BS are better miners in many situations.
    3) join a mining corp, preferably one living in low/null sec

But yeah, I am no miner.

This has all information you'll ever need for mining - from your first day to your mighty Hulk and further.

It just doesn't include mining in Worm Hole Systems yet, but that is not for who's just starting to play and looking for advice.

    Thanks everyone.

    A few questions:

    >>>1) avoid quantity mining

What is meant by "quantity mining" and why should I avoid it?

    >>>2) train up BS - they make the best ore miners until you get your hands on barges. Even then, BS are better miners in many situations.

    What does BS stand for?

    >>>3) join a mining corp, preferably one living in low/null sec

Any ideas how I can find one?

mining ore is nice and all but if you plan to join corps/alliances you will find they need massive amounts of Ice. That is why you train for real mining ships. BSes cant mine Ice. Only specialized mining ships

So train tthe mining ships to be a real miner that can help fuel POSes, research labs, and such. not to mention i belive ice is used for liquid ozone. Jump bridges need liquid ozone all my ships has some in the holds. In 0.0, i see ozone spike up to 600+ sometimes. But now I think its close to empire.

So anyway, ice is life. Train for a real mining ship if you want to help everyone in day-to-day business and travel.

I'm not a miner but I will show up to Ice mining ops and help rat and/or haul ice. Just whatever they need me to do

[edit[] I believe our Ice miners pilot Makinaw ships for Ice Harveter bonuses.

    1) Quantity mining
    - mining high amounts of low end ore
    - very repetitive, no fun, no interaction, boring, mostly inefficient
    + it is safe

    2) BS
    - battleship class ship
+ tier 1 battleships are easy to train and they has got plenty of low/high slots for your mining lasers, mining upgrades andor cargo expanders
+ large drone bay and better overall defense capabilities
+ they are very cheap compared to specialized mining ships
+ they offer very good performance for the price

    3) How to find a corporation
    - EVE forums or google
    - ingame chat recruitment channel or help/rookie channel
    - talk to people you meet ingame

    EDIT:
In no way I recommend you to mine in battleships only! It is just a handy ship to mine in before you get all the mining skills up for mining barges.
I am sorry I didn't make it clear from the begining.

First off i'll say  battle ship will beat a retriever for mining time and cargo hold but after that mining barges are what is needed for full time mining operations and the cycle time on the mining lasers on a coverter and ex-hummers will out do a battle ship in every way, especially if you set-up a mining barge with drones for defense against rats.

it you are new to the game, I would suggest an Osprey cruiser it has a 20% mining bonus and will allow you to make the jump to the Covetor as quick as anything. While BS's and BC's may out mine them on some levels you still have too train for them and spend isk on them. With the osprey you can go strait to the covetor then worry about training other things latter. Also look for an area to mine that is away from a major trade hub and has many belts to mine, and if someone takes your ore don't say anything just leave. It won't happen that often and it's not worth worrying about. Mining is the safest way to make isk but not the most profitable.

This is also a good guide.
