Hi
This is a cry for help really, I like MMorps but I can not find what I'm looking for.
I should say that im a middle aged woman who has always been into computers and I love CGI.
Up until now ive tended to play that same games that my hubby does but in all honesty they are not really ever the games that I would choose.
The thing is that I know what I like and what I'd like to see in an MMorpg but as yet I'm not sure that what I want exists as such.
The things that I really like are:
Detailed Crafting - but crafting which requires real skill, and where you have a chance of failing if you do it wrong.
Good Guild application - I like guilds and have even run a few over the years. I like that feature in games.
Houses and Furniture - I like houses, I like filling them with stuff and things like that. The more the better.
Peaceful play option - now this will seam odd to most folk, but I dont always want to bash things. I'd like the uption to just create a crafter and progress my character without having to ever bash anything. I suppose that this just make me strange, but i'm willing to accept that about myself; anyway i'm an awsome healer no matter what system I play in lol.
Monster free areas - I dont just mean the main city etc. I mean that as in the real world monsters really do tend to stick to the areas away from civilization so i'd really not like to encounter 100s of them as I travel from town a to town via the main road. Id also like to option to gather and craft without having to be a fighting fury. If farmers all have to be fighters then every npc crafter or gatherer would have to be rediculous levels.
Guardian free resources - it always strikes me as being strange that resources usually seem to have guardian creatures in mmorps. In many of the games ive played these creatures seam to litterally prowl resources. This again means that to gather resources you have to be a fighter to some degree. i'm not saying that this is wrong, its just a thing on my wish list, and it does spoil any chance of playing a purely artisan character.
Idylic settings: All games that Ive played have had at least one, maybe two of these. but on the whole ive seen more dark and gloomy settings than idylic ones.
True item creation: This is a difficult one really, im talking here about being able to make a table in a CG program then importing it into a game. Its not something that I can't live without though.
There have been elements in certain games that I have liked such as:
The Detailed crafting in: Star wars galaxies, Vanguard
The Housing in: Star wars Galaxies.
Idylic settings in: Hobbiton in Lord of the Rings, some fields in Guild Wars.
True item Creation in: Second Life.
In Conclusion
I don't need all of the above in fact I'd be happy with just Detailed Crafting, Idylic settings, Houses and furniture and peacefull play. I'm also not saying that I want a game with just these things but I'd like to option to be there for people like me who might want that sort of thing. I'm hoping i'm not the only one.
By the way, If you know a game that might meet the above please let me know.
Thanks for listening.

I'd say give EQ2 a shot. It seems like it will mostly fit this bill; however of the games you mentioned I feel SWG does it best.
The housing and crafting in EQ2 aren't near as good as SWG but they might be a close 3rd/4th out of all mainstream games; however not near as poorly implemented as LoTRO. Unfortunately unlike SWG you can't level exclusively as a crafter; you'll have to counter balance with adventuring levels.
For a truly hardcore crafting game you could always dig up the old beast called Horizons. Crafting itself is very simplistic but you can multi-class becoming every crafting profession in the game, and practically* never fight. You also build your own house and have the ability to deco your plot of land. You can buy plots of land that are different sizes and located in varying places across the world. You can build silo's to store goods, trainer workshops, crafting stations, houses, fountains, statues, walls, gates etc. However the actual houses there serves virtually no purpose and items cannot be placed inside or stored inside. Though there are clear functional purposes of many of the crafted buildings/structures. The graphics are extremely dated; however it's a decent crafting experience.
I imagine the population is hanging on with only the most staunch hardcore fans remaining. I haven't played the game in quite a while, but I used to have a capped crafting biped and a capped dragon.
The last game I'd recommend from a pure crafting perspective would be Ryzom. Almost no housing experience to be had in the game, but the pure crafting and multi-classing has the potentially to keep you digging in the dirt for ages.
Both horizons and ryzom items are solely crafting supported; meaning with no crafters there are no items for the adventurers no armor, no crafting tools/equipment. However both games exist on the fringe of the MMO world and their limited populations make immersion difficult to say the least; which makes being a fresh recruit to these games more difficult to break into and start playing.
Have you tried EQII? I would say out of the games I have played, that it fits most of your wants. It's not a flashy new game but the housing and crafting are excellent. I actually renew every once in a while just to level my army of crafters and decorate my house.
While crafting is a profession instead of a class, you can still ignore the class part of your crafters if you wish. That's what I do. Most of my crafters are quite high level crafters, but low level combat class (like below 10) It makes gathering a bit more challenging, but I enjoy that.
However you can gather fairly safely as long as you're paying attention. There are some nodes that have monsters nearby, but there is almost always another node of the same type not too far away that is safe.
Good luck and I hope you find what you're looking for.
Puzzle pirates - The crafting requires skill because items are made through puzzles. It has crews that are like guilds. It has housing. All islands are peaceful areas because you fight at sea. www.puzzlepirates.com
If you want to make your own items try whirled. Everything is player-made www.whirled.com
I felt like you pretty much outlined Vanguard in your post. I assume you've tried that, why did you quit?
I tried vanguard very early on because of the detailed crafting that It spoke of before it was released (omongst other things), but then as many know hardly anything worked in the game.
I also found that the monsters were pretty harsh from a very early stage, far harder than any other game that I had played, which made gathering very difficult indeed. This was part of the Early vanguard ethos that everything would be "hardcore", which was not something that I had wanted but I was willing to give it a try. I think that this policy might have changed when the game nearly went bust and was taken over by another company.
I tried it again later and found that there were still many faults.
I liked two things from vanguard, crafting and boats, but generally I don't think that the quality of the game was what I personally was looking for.
I think that the quality of graphics might not be what I'm looking for in these two games
have you played these two games for long?
Sounds interresting, I only tried the free island in this game. Is there any skill required in crafting in EQII ? When I say skill I mean skill required of the player.

You should consider trying it again. Unless you are a skinner you have a place to harvest for any skill which is nearly or completely free of monsters. I leveled both Lumberjack and Reaping to 450 in a couple of days not getting killed once (at level 20-ish). Get the trial again and see for yourself on the isle, the game has come a long way. If you want me to I could give you directions as to where to go to train each harvesting skill. I'm on Xeth server and my guild is the Xeth Trading Company.

If you only tried the old 'trial of the isle' trial, you probably did not get a very good impression. I think the trial island is a bit outdated nowadays. Luckily the trial has been greatly improved and updated. I would suggest you try making a character that can start the trial in Kelethin, Neriak or Timorous Deep. Those areas are much more dynamic both visually and in general. I am particularily fond of Kelethin, but then again I am a sucker for the fae (good aligned fairy race) as well, and it is their zone.
As for crafting skill, I'd say there is. It isn't maddeningly difficult, but you certainly cannot craft afk. It's a button pressing minigame. You get a set of six skills to be used while you craft , you keep these renewed and occasionally get an "event" you counter by pressing the proper button. The different crafting skills do different things, like improving durability but making you craft a bit slower, or crafting faster at the sacrifice of durability (ie: larger chance to fail and not get an item, or only get your fuel back).
The trick is figuring out a good rhythm for you, countering events (which sometimes give buffs for crafting). These crafting skills also will upgrade as you progress as a crafter, making it a bit easier for you to make easy items, though the harder recipes will remain challenging for you to complete.
I am not so good at explaining it, but here is a good site that does. EQ2 Trader's corner: http://eq2.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g5&menustr=040000000000
I have just resubbed my EQII account as well, so if you want some help there I am happy to lend a hand. Though I should warn you I am a pretty casual player. I spend more time crafting and decorating my house than I do levelling. PM me for server/character names if you are interested. Best of luck!
In all, I read this post, and to me it just screamed out loud "EQ2!" I'm currently playing, and nearing the end of my first month. Love the game, and am taking my time and being thorough playing it. That said, the only feature I've missed thus far is PVP as I chose a PVE server. Time will tell whether I stick to it or not, but with the features you want, I can't imagine a better game that's currently very active and well-populated, and even polished to the degree of EQ2. Vanguard trial drove me away in its first hour with a handful of immediate bugs, awful performance (on a high-end machine), glitchy animations, and a sweeping feeling of "Wow this feels old and crappy for a 2yr-old game." so I never got to experience its features at all, though some say its crafting and housing features are awesome.

Ahhhhhhh'
Thank you so much stormina. I had no idea that this was in EQII. The crafting sounds really cool!
In the main game, what is the world like? Is it instanced or is it continuous like Warcraft and LoTRO?
Stormina and Shiymmas
Im beginning to suspect that maybe vanguard got its crafting ideas from EQII because the descriptions of crafting seam almost exactly what I loved about Vanguard crafting
Do any of you two belong to a guild that I could maybe join in order to learn more about the game which im beginning to suspect I might have overlooked all to quickly
I must admit that you have both given me some hope here....
I'm not in a guild at this time because I've only just returned. If I were I'd certainly try to get you in. There are lots of helpful people and guilds on the server I am on however. I play on Antonia Bayle, one of the largest servers. It's also a roleplay server, but roleplay is pretty much optional. You can however find it if you're looking.
About Vanguard having a similar crafting experience. That is not surprising, EQII and Vanguard are both SOE games. It is likely they had some of the same people working on them too (though I cannot confirm this, just speculation).
I am happy to hear you sound excited about a game. I know how annoying it is to be unsure what to play next. I was in the same situation but figured, hey EQII was a lot of fun, I'll try that again. And so far I have not regretted it. I truly hope this game is for you too. Or if not, that you find one that is (and tell me about it!).
With regards regions etc in EQII, what is the world like? Is it instanced or is it continuous like Warcraft and LoTRO?
The world has a lot of instances, which is something people get angry about. The only part I hate about it is Qeynos and Freeport where you have to zone a lot. Besides that, SOE made an effort and on RoK and TSO they seemed to reduce instancing drastically. The EQ2 crafting system is pretty fun and somewhat of a challenge, although I do think Vanguard's is more challenging. EQ2 also has a lot of depth, which I think you might enjoy.
Im pretty shure i have extctly what your looking for >>>>

With over 1,500,000 registered players, Fallen Sword is a highly addictive, continuously evolving massively multiplayer roleplay game where you join players across the globe in a world of fantasy and adventure. Traverse vast areas ranging from the Misty Mountains to the mighty City of Xinderoth and beyond. You will battle countless creatures such as Dragons, Zombie Kings, Undead Warriors, Giant Scorpions and defeat them to gain powerful items to arm yourself with as you walk the realms in search of adventure and glory.
You will also be able to engage in combat with other players, become a bounty hunter, craft and create your own items, and engage in countless quests. You are also able to join one of many thousands of player-created guilds where you can meet like minded players and team up to defeat champion and elite creatures. Guilds can store or borrow items and construct guild structures giving its members considerable advantage, strengthening the player to face the horrors found in the world of Fallen Sword.
Unfortunately I can find out absolutely nothing about this game. It also wants me to join before it lets me see more than the picture on the front page. It is also not listed in mmorp.com
I'm afraid that I won't sign up for something I know nothing about. But thanks for your suggestion LnKenn
I also vote EQ2.
The crafting in EQ2 is very complex. It's a little too complex for me honestly.
Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard
Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.
Did my first bit of crafting in everquest yesterday evening (it took quite a while to download the client lol). Though I have only done a small amount of crafting, I must say that this is definitely more like what I'm looking for on the crafting front.
now if only I could find out where you go to take your crafting beyond level 10 lol.
To be able to go past level 10, speak to the crafting trainer, they will ask for your name, and help you specify a crafting branch, you then do this again at 19 to finalize your tradeskill. Glad you're having fun so far.
Now crafting level 21 :P
I'm now in a friendly but casual guild im really impressed by the guild options there are so many really good ideas. such as being able to craft in a guild and even pay for that crafting from guild funds. this way I can make things for the guild as need. excellent ideas.
