A few specific questions about combat

gthreenogthreeno Member Posts: 36

I see this game has crazy over the top combat attack animations, which is cool, but does it keep your character in place? For example, some of the combat throws your characters up in the air, slams the target down, etc.

So if i were going to do that combat attack, would it hold my character in place until the animation finishes, while the enemy can run around me? Or does it hold us both in place? Or am I free to move during the whole combat animation?

I hope that makes sense. Might be a stupid question, but I think it would be a big deal for a pvp game if you got stuck in place until your combat attack animation finishes.

Also, how much does level make a difference in PVP? For example, is someone that is only 1or 2 levels above me going to run my face into the ground, or will I stand a chance?

Thanks.

Certain attacks root you in place, while others don't. Instant attacks don't seem to root you, but casted ones and instant AOEs do.

I was playing a mage, with a lot of attacks that root you in place while you cast, and I didn't feel it was affecting my combat too much. It definately has negative mobility impact and will *slightly* affect survavability of casters, but all the CC that you have will more than compensate for this slight disadvantage,

Certain attacks freeze your character in place for the duration of the animation.

Something that is especially annoying when trying to chase after a runner. Since your character stops to attack and the other NPC/Player continues to move there is a huge chance that you will not be able to hit them.

Thanks for the replies. I should have noted that I was talking about melee only. I figured casting would obviously keep you in place.

But this seems like a disadvantage, especially in pvp. What if one of your powerful attacks root you in place for the sake of the combat animation to finish? Then people would recognize what you're about to do, and run away to avoid the blow of the attack?

Or is this not the case?

I tried watching for it in videos but didn't really see anyway.

At low levels all of my melee attacks were instant and I could run around in circles while hitting my target. Even as a ranger I could auto-shoot while moving. I had 1 instant aoe attack on a Templar and that attack would root me in place for a second while I was doing my animation. The worst part about this root thing is that you cannot be moving before you execute your instrant attack if that attack roots you.

it goes a little beyond regular "can't cast while moving". It adds a second or two of animation after your cast; and you can't move during that time. For example, you stand still and cast 3-second spell, at the end of 3 seconds your spell fires off and you try to move, but you can't.

I don't particularly mind having certain skills requiring my character to be standing still to execute. What I do dislike is losing control over my character during combat because the game freezes me in place during certain attack animations.

I should be able to move at any time and the movement should cancel the spell casting or whatever.

This makes me very sad. Is it as annoying as it sounds?

It can get a bit annoying at times. It's not a game breaking issue or anything but I can't help but be reminded why WoW is still such a popular game. Because Blizzard has managed to create a very smooth and intuitive combat system.

i'm hoping this beta weekend isn't gonna be all quests and pve @_@

You can duel anyone at anytime at any lvl. But this event is only going to have a cap of lvl20 and only one race can be played, Dueling will be the only way to get your pvp fix on.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

around level 20 and late teens you can get to Abyss (the pvp zone) through random rifts (teleport gates), as noted their location and time is random. In Abyss you can pvp, but since you cannot see levels of your opponent, you might get slaughtered while looking to do the same. Bottom line is that the game IS fun beyond first few hours and/or levels.

I agree (with the smooth WoW combat), so I'm not sure how this will sit with me. I'm glad to hear it's not a game breaking issue and I eagerly await Aion, but I wont judge until I experience it myself.

I'm a very active player when I pvp - constantly moving, or trying to. So this might sound silly, but I hope this doesn't ruin the experience for me.

    Thanks for your replies Heartless.

Aion (?) will be P2P, with the first month free, like most.

Yeah, ALL beta events from now until release are free, then you HAVE to pay to play the game when it's out for real.

As it is now, the quest line for Abyss access is 25 (CH, Kor). But rifts do open into the opposing homeland in the 20 + areas. As for the rooting, casting doesn't actually root your character. You can move at any time, and for certain spells it will interrupt the cast. For others, you can cast and move at the same time (insta-cast like root). For melee, for the most part the animation is only one or two seconds so you might not even notice the root effect, but most melee attacks you can move at the same time. So long as your target isn't out of range, it will still hit them.

Might be a stupid question, but Is it enough time for your target to run away (and get out of range) to avoid the hit?

If they are barely in range when you start, yes. Melee range is about 5m (ten steps) which they can not clear in a second. The melee attacks that last longer (like a Gladiator's Air Shackle) typically bind the opposing character as well so there is no easy "get away while you're powering up" PvP.

Ah, ok. It doesn't sound so bad then. =)
