Opinions on piracy

I would like to know what people on this forum think about piracy?

I was talking in another forum in South America.. and people seem to be ok with piracy, and getting their games downloaded from the interwebs.. it made me angry, i understand in some countries people dont make as much money as in well developed countries.. but this is not a valid excuse. In the end it is like stealing...

I do download movies from p2p all the time :P so i am guilty of that, and music too haha but never a video game.. is against my gamer religion lol.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Pure and simple. Piracy is another word for thievery. It's illegal

You can't steal something if it didn't cost any money to reproduce, like digital media, and you weren't gonna buy a copy anyway.

    It's called sharing.

Is getting books and movies from the public library stealing?

    It's all copyright law bullshit.

Pirates get more chicks than Ninjas.

I dunno, some people think they are "screwing the man" and think it's a good thing. So I think a lot of people do it because of that reason.

So explain to me how developing a game, producing and album, or making a movie doesn't cost anything?

If this is true I need to make a career change.

    He said REproduce.

He's kind of right. I guess you can't really call it stealing neccesarily, but you're getting something for free that was meant to be paid for, so it's about the same thing.

    Sure thing.

Right after you explain how downloading a freely reproducible digital copy of something you would never, ever buy affects the folks who make that crap?

What?  In a perfect world no one gets to see anyone else's art/creation unless they pay first?  That's not a perfect world- that's a nazi world.

    Living in an Egocentric World

What causes young children to feel so possessive of their playthings? Still egocentric, a 3-year-old does not yet have a well-developed ability to put herself in another's place. A child may carefully guard her toys, as Brittany did, because she believes that allowing someone else to use something is actually giving it away. Most young threes feel vulnerable about losing their possessions. Because they think everything revolves around themselves, when they see all of the toys at school, they think they are "mine." As a result, if they wish to play with a toy being used by another child, they may try to take it. Likewise, if a 3-year-old is playing with a toy, they are likely to try to protect it.

People have been sharing media and art for centuries.  It isn't going to change and technology is only going to make it easier over time.

    Get over it.

    Get over it.

Which is largely why most of the music being produced these days is absolute shit.

What's the point in pouring your heart and soul into making a great album if your "fans" are going to tear your livelyhood out from under you?

So typical.. people never understand how their own selfishness and stupidity really does make the world a crappier place to live.

    Thanks for that.

Piracy is theft, plain and simple.  If bands can't get paid for their work, they will no longer be able to afford to make the music we enjoy. If game developers can't get paid for their work, they will not longer be able to bring us games to enjoy. The same applies to software, videos, or anything else that is easily copied and redistributed. Bottom line is if we want great music, games, prgrams and movies we need to pay for them, to ensure we continue to have these things a part of our lives.

Copyright laws and patents I have a disagreement with, MORE than one person can think of an idea at the same time, and more than one person should be able to make the same thing, regardless of who "filed for a patent" first. I do not believe there should be laws on ideas, only individual finished works.

  • EnkinduEnkindu Member Posts: 1,098

Never said pirates were smart or had good taste..

It is obviously just my opinion, but I feel like the overall quality of movies and music in the world has been in steady decline since the mid 90s.

Well, i am happy to see everyone here has different opinions. But one thing is for sure, everyone here thinks different than on the spanish forums i went to, were everyone just judged me as a rich american that can afford games lol.

Well there are two coins of this issues.. and i agree with the side that says sharing is caring. But when all you do is share your stuff, and not buying anything at all for x or y reason, you are just stealing from your friends who bought the product with their hard earned money. And in the long run you are stealing from the artists that made the product.

I dont think gamers should play ilegally downloaded games.. :( it doesnt help the industry in the long run. is selfish.

And i understand is hard for some people to see the big picture, most people only care about their own good..

Developers must do more things to fuck piracy.. without fucking the ones that actually pay for the games..

Why do you think there are so many wow and lineage "private" servers and no ffxi private servers? :)

A musicians main source of income is merchandise and tour dates. File sharing is a form of promotion for many of musicians, unknowns and superstars alike.

  • EnkinduEnkindu Member Posts: 1,098

Plese save it.  I was a full time touring musician for a couple years.  The ease of full quality digital reproduction and piracy has all but killed the record industry.

The way things are now most great musicians I know would just as soon take straight jobs and share their great talents with their friends and families.

When trash like "American Idol" is the new source of pop music, can you blame them?

Piracy is illegal, but it is not theft.

Regardless, piracy is not something we can really do anything about without massive changes to the way we live (for the worse).

New strategies are necessary to deal with how the world operates now.

Does noone here realize that the "Anti-Piracy" movement is a cloak for corporations trying to put-in place more ownership of the internet?

Big Media and various other corps don't get enough money or control from the current model of the internet. Their plan is to create a new internet that is akin to a glorified cable TV service, where you subscribe to a set number of "channels" and everything else is restricted. Think I'm joking?

Piracy is here to stay, it is simply never going away. It is far too popular at this point, and to call it criminal and subject people to criminal enforcement would require enforcing 50% of the population, or more. There are only a few ways to "combat" piracy right now, and all of which require some form of invasion of privacy and affront to citizen's rights. The only way to completely get rid of piracy is to use the "Glorified Subscription Service" model, thereby putting the final stake through the heart. I don't want to live in a fascist country being run by corporations. Do you?

The gaming industry continues to grow and continues to make money, as does the movie industry with their continuing hundreds of millions being pulled in at the box office. The music industry is another story. People in this thread have said the music industry is failing because of piracy... lol. Really? There is no innovation in music huh?  So I guess most of the trash in the 80's and early 90's were result of piracy? Poor musicians.

    I wasn't aware that I was a corporation.

Save the jokes. Who do you think runs the ads and informs the people of the "dangers of piracy"? Who do you think will be rewarded should drastic measures be put in place to control everyone's way of life, when it comes to the internet.

Certainly not you, or I, or anyone else.

I understand the anti-piracy movement is not a good thing, and loathe the thought of others gaining complete control over information.

I also understand they are gaining the fuel needed for this movement by the sheer numbers of people commiting piracy. If we can find other solutions to the problem, we can stop the anti- piracy movement in it''s tracks, otherwise because people refuse to pay artists for their works they will gain the fuel needed to gain control over how information is distributed. Not all musicians make the big money, not all films produced are high budget, not all games can survive if their works are stolen. Piracy actually hurts the little guys much worse than it hurts big business, but they will get the funding and support needed to push the antipiracy information control  forward if people do not figure out better solutions, and help solve this problem on their own.
