Their is an old saying trick me once shame on you, trick me twice shame on me.
This holds true with MMOs, if this was being developed by a different game company or a different team of Square Enix I would say go for it, but its not. This is the same game company that made the failure of that was FFXI, if you liked FFXI you will like FFXIV that much will be sure.
They will tweak the game a bit, better graphics, maybe increase some solo ability but its gonna be the same, game companies don't change over night, (well not without a massive merger or restructuring of the company from the ground up.)
Which is why I don't understand all the hype for this game, they might as well have stated they were going to make FFXI-part 2 and it would of said the same thing, only now they get to make up a completely different story for a world that doesn't make sense. On top of this the races look the same, which is argueably one of Sq-Enix biggest flaws with FFXI, No playable Moogles, No wolf men from FFV, No ancients/Centra, (or what ever their name was from FFXIII.)
Let players play their favorite races from past FFs, thats the reason so many people hated SW:G, no one could be a Jedi, then every one was a Jedi and it was just lame because all the other classes sucked. Imagine a FF MMO where you could be a Red XIII race or a Black mage race (similar to Vivi from FFIX.)
Final Fantasy games had always had so many races in each game that its silly to have such a limited race selection that are from non of the previous games.
Comments
It was the Cetra, of which Aeris ( or Aerith in the Japanese version ) was one. That was Final Fantasy VII. FFXIII isn't even out yet.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-
-And on the 8th day, man created God.-
I don't think you're quite understanding storyline and character styling. Most of the entire FF series is a disjointed series of events that, for the most part, have absolutely nothing to do with each other. The only common race throughout the series was moogles, that's it.
Vivi's race were a bunch of cloned bio weapons. Red was a bio-weapon and the last one of his kind (from what I recall).
FF11 didn't fail because of race selection, in fact I -RARELY- have seen that brought up as a "flaw' in any game, ever. FF11 'failed' (note: was not as successful as it should have been) because of very fundamental design flaws.
Wow. Square Enix hater much? One interview with the dev team on this game has already proven your whole issue with it being the same old same old completely wrong.
They stated this game would do away with grinding xp for levels and is leaning toward a weapon based progression of some sort. That sure sounds COMPLETELY different than FFXI to me.
Also, Square has a proven track record of changing their FF titles to never be the same game twice. It is the biggest reason it even has 14! and counting titles in one IP.
Whatever, I'm going to enjoy the hype and the anticipation for FFXIV instead of getting all negative and annoyed about something I have no control over anyway. /sigh
And from FF7 to FF8 there is zero story continuity. Same as basically the ENTIRE FREAKING SERIES. 8 had nothing to do with 9, 9 had nothing to do with 10 and 10 had nothing to do with 11 or 12.
11 will have nothing to do with 14 beyond races, which has been done before in the series.
You sound like you have been playing it.
The problem with that is FFXI was an extremely well done MMO for it's time. If you've played it more recently and didn't like it there's good reason for that.
The rest of your post is silly at best. ^_^ You're not very knowledgeable on what Square Enix does as a company and with their staple series.

"The failure that is ffxi"... Really?
FFXI was the shit crackhead.
I like how one of the top 5 MMO's is a failure.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.

Lolz to this thread. If FF14 was merely FF11 with better graphics, new quests, tweaked soloability and a few other "minor" changes I would still play it. FF11 was and is awesome.

How is FF11 a failure?
and i stopped reading when you said that moogle should have been a playable race, knew it was a pointless wall of text from there.

That sounds like the perfect game.. lawl. ^_^

This ^^
Your opinion, however this game will sell *millions* of copies, have no doubt.
I like how you think top 5 is a good statistic to have under your belt, thats like saying out of the 5 MMOs that managed to not die 2 months after creation we did 5th! And lets not forget that #1 is wow with a staggering population basis of over 50% of the MMO market at least. With WAR coming in 2nd with roughly 20% population, and then after that the other 3 games it managed to get 5th.
Yes I did know all these races are all not from the same game, thats the point, its so that no matter which FF you liked you can play a portion of that game in a MMO, I mean those games were the reason you wanted to play this one right?
Also its funny how some people are quick to judge me as of knowing nothing about the FF series and yet I know multiple different races from multiple games.
How I "know" this game will be the same, 1. same races (so same blan races.) 2. Square Enix is still under control. (yea I mentioned these before but seriously get a clue guys, you think Square Enix has an endless bag of tricks up their sleaves. They didn't update the combat system till FF12.)
So yea some are gonna say "But FFXI was great!" then why did they need to create a new MMO? they could of just updated their old MMO to be what they wanted, obviously they are gonna "try" a new direction with this the point being that they will fail.
I loved Square Soft, some of my favorite games of all time are from them, but when they became Sq-Enix they lost pretty much every thing that made them Square, (other than Nobuo Uematsu.)
FF11 has more subs that WAR,AOC.COH,D&DO,DAOC,DF,EVE,EQ,EQ2,LOTRO,POTBS,SWG,UO,VG and the game is mush older than most of those games, i got the game because im an FF fan, does not mean i want the old races.
its like saying you want Cloud in Final Fantasy XIII, FF is a great francise name with great developers and thats why people wanted FF11 not to play as FF races >.>
1)WoW (11 Million)
2)Lineage 2 (2 Million)
2)Lineage (1 Million)
4)Maplestory (Not sure :P)
5)Final Fantasy 11 (500K+)
They are the top played MMORPG, WAR is not there.

It's rather clear you've made up your mind about this game. Therefore you could do us a huge favor and move on to something else. What exactly do you have to prove? You have no leg to stand on that FFXI failed at anything, it was and is a successful mmo that many enjoy, gets regular updates and COOL ones at that, has a decent population still to this day. This is nowhere near a failure.
It failed for you, make the distinction.
How is this game not in the spirit of Final Fantasy exactly do you even know? FF is an epic Japanese RPG with group play and strategy, check, and check. SE doesn't reinvent the wheel every time they are the masters of polish and refining what works. FFXI was created in the spirit of popular MMOs at the time, FF14 will be the same with it's own Square attention to detail and story.
How is that not cool?
Again it's clear you don't like the company, so move on because nothing you say will really ring true to people who follow SE and play their games from the 1990's until now.
You seem to have a chip on your shoulder about group play judging from your previous posts, that's too bad but no one is making you anticipate this game. Do you secretly want to like it but are afraid you'll be forced to group?
Cya
PS acting like a victim won't help you either when you use facts that are not true.

Good job at trying to troll. If you keep it up, I'm sure you will eventually get somewhere.

Its clear the OP has a vendetta against Sqaure Enix, or perhaps even all games of eastern influence.
FF11 was ahead of most MMos in its time, and many still, and we can hope FF14 does the same.
this site seems to have a lot of games hater.wow hater, aion hater, darkfall hater to name a few kinds=p
if u dont like the mmo just dont play it.why bash the game and attempt to get others to flame you for it?^^,i personally dont like darkfall or wow or some other mmo etc but i will not post it to tell the world hehe.
if u must give a bad review u should wait after u tested it in the beta when its is out.
for me i dont really care what others will think of FFXIV online.i am gonna play it no matter how much negative news or reviews it gets from people who dislike it without waiting to test it
I didn't think FFXI was a failure. I thought it was a fantastic game.
I just liked World of Warcraft better when it came out.
I'm certain Square-Enix has learned from the industry, and their previous title.
I have to comment on the responses. Most of them were well thought out and funny and true. The OP has nothing on the cool people who have responded. I like the FFXIV fans. ^^
I also agree that it was FFXI with updated graphics and updated controls, then that would be great. But it sounds like it'll be even better from the little we already know. More races, the ability to solo a little more... sounds great.
I agree that if you try it now it's very possible that you wont like it but when it came out it was pretty exciting and has been popular enough to warrant another go in FFXIV. Hardly sounds like a failure to me.
Clearly I have a hatred for Eastern games, yet ive played a good deal of FFs and Square soft games. Not to mention a few SE games.
Maybe I just dont understand the hype and never will after a game company tries and fails.
500,000 is just enough players to keep it going and make a small profit on it, so if your definition of a game not succeding is managing to hold on then the Matrix MMO was a success in your mind, after all the held out for 4 years even though the game was utter crap.
Now for those of you still playing FF11 I would probably be more worried than excited, trust me if blizz made a WoW 2 for next year I would be disapointed in that it would mean Blizz thinks they could redo the entire game and be better if they had a fresh start with what they know now.
On top of this for those that arnt currently playing FF11 and are excited I would question why again? because you saw a 3min blip of a scene with most of it being CGI and the rest unditermined amount of game play cut up so that you cant tell the difference? If this had been a 6 min CGI trailer I could see the anticipation because then we would of known a bit more about the game, if it had been a 6min pure demo of the game I could see it also being equally as interesting.
If this had a whole new game with new races (not nessicarily what I said for races, just different.), new classes, and new take on the FF francise for an MMO I could see being excited, but with as little info on it and the blurb of a trailer your all exicted about something that looks exactly the same with a better graphics boost?
Your old saying sucks. U dont know jack about ff11 or squaresoft (heh). Your definitly a crackhead and your moms is fine with her secrets on. lolz
I guess our whole point is that you have to credibility. FFXI did not fail just because you did not enjoy it. That's a little arrogant to make such an assumption.
In fact the reason most people, on this forum, are excited about this game - even with just a little information - is because they see it as a success. And when someone enjoys a game put out by any company, then chance are they are going to have a little more faith in any games that would be released in the future.
In short. People are excited about FFXIV because they liked FFXI. It shouldn't be a difficult concept to understand.
