Hey guys,
Still having a few months to wait before any new interesting MMO comes out (I think Aion then SW:TOR could both appeal to me), I am thinking of trying SWG, which I never tried before.
I read a bit about it, and I still have a few newbie questions:
1. Which galaxy should I choose when creating my character?
2. I read somewhere that you are allowed one character per galaxy only, is that true?
3. Is crafting only accessible to the trader profession?
4. If 2 and 3 are true, it means you can't have both a jedi and a trader to craft for your jedi on the same galaxy, is that correct?
Thanks for any advice you can provide,
Erli.

SWG is actually still a decent game in my opinion. I play off and on and find that if you are pretty casual, there is quite a bit of content to be had.
The level process is somewhat lackluster at best. They tried to improve it by putting in something called the Legacy quest. It is good to do because it gets your feet wet in the game, as well as gets you a few nice things to start you off. (I.E. starships, speeders, money, weapons/armor) However it is pretty tedious as your progress into it, so my suggestion would be to get an xp grind group once you feel comfortable with the game. You can level to max in 2-3 days almost completely AFK. Don't worry about missing content, most of the game is geared toward end game anyway. (Space, heroic instances, pvp, rare drops and collections, etc)
Now for your bullets;
1. Servers have merged recently, so look for one that has a healthy population. I personally am on Flurry. Has a good population, very rebel heavy (unfortunately), but overall mostly helpful and friendly people. Plus our guild on it is massive.
Other servers to consider are Bria, big on PVP and the oldest server in the game. Chilrastra (sp?) is good as well as Bloodfin. I don't know much about those servers other than the pop is good. Obraik should be chiming in soon about chili heh. The last I can think of is Starsider. It is the unofficial RP and Space server.
2. You USED to be allowed 1 char per galaxy. Now everyone gets 2.
3. Crafting is only accessible through a trader profession yes. You can respec any of your toons at any time to be different combat/trader professions. Mind you that traders level up through making stuff, not combat. So a level 90 jedi respeced to a trader would be a level 5 trader, and vise versa.
4. Since 2 is false, you can have both. If you are going the Jedi route, the best trader you can have at least to start with is a tailor in my opinion. You can make all the clothes you want for appearances. Not only that, down the road when you can reverse engineer components, you can make your "Jedi Suit" which is almost essential for any Jedi.
Hope that helps, respond or PM me if you have any more questions.
Thanks a lot for your answers EyeSpEye, and glad to see that there are still some people enjoying the game.
Another question though, when you respec, do you loose experience accumulated? Let's say that i level jedi to 90, then want to be a tailor. I respec to trader, but will I be able to spec back to jedi-90 when I want to fight ? And do those repecs cost much ?
Erli.
Sorry I forgot to elaborate that.
You can respec back and forth and keep your current levels. You lose any xp you gained into your next level however when you respec. But of course at level 90 it doesn't matter anymore. You get a few free respecs, but then you start getting charged and it does increase pretty rapidly. I think the money cap is 25 mil or so. Every month though your respec "ticks" down by 1.
In all fairness though, it is better to just have a crafter and a combat toon if that is the route you are going. The only reason you would want or need to respec is because A, you are bored of your profession and want out or B, using a certain toon to level up. Take the trader, if you want a chef, you could level up a chef from the start. However, it isn't very cost effective at times. Most people use the architect to level a trader because they don't require a lot of resources and can level fast. (dayish)
Oh and if you do combat to combat, or trader to trader, you stay the level you were (minus any xp towards the next level as stated before)
Thanks again Eye, will try starting a trader tonight to see how things play as a crafter...
Just a quick update about my SWG experience.
Rolled a trader yesterday (domestic) just to get a feel for the crafting, and indeed crafting looks great. Rolled on the same server as my jedi, which is Chilastra. Did the tutorial, decided to skip most of the optional station quests to land on tatooine. There I started asking questions, but saw on map that only 4-5 people were on Mos Esley at the time.
Decided to roll on another server, the heavily populated one, Starsider. Mos Esley population seems much more vibrant, as I saw blue arrows everywhere on the map. The only thing is that I started asking noob questions in the "chat" channel, but nobody was answering - for example, I wanted to know which creatures are dropping meat, as i need meat and hides for a crafting quest I have. Is there another channel for "global chat" or even for noobs ?
Anyway will try rerolling my jedi tonight on Starsider too, even if the server was lagging a bit yesterday.
Glad to hear things are going well, Erlijus.
When you speak out loud in a busy area your chatter can get lost in the hubbub. You could try contacting a player helper if you have any questions.
Type /who helper and then send one of them a tell by using the name that returns in the search results:
/tell helperJo Hi jo, I'm fairly new to SWG, could you help me by answering a few questions, please?
Almost all creatures drop meat, once you have killed them, use the tilde key on the corpse to bring up the raidal menu and select the "Harvest Resources" option, three additional options will appear, one wil be "Harvest Meat".
You can continue to kill and harvest creatures this way, or look to purchase a droid to do it for you. Speak to an Engineering Trader or check the bazaar.
Simply use a Bazaar terminal, select then "Vendor Location" tab, check "Entire Galaxy" button, select the "All" catgory and type the word "Harvest" into the item name filter. You can also further narrow your search to ceratin price ranges, and order the results by price if you like.
The highest rating they can have is 120 Harvesting Bonus which will be very useful indeed.
I hope that helps.
Hehe thanks alot, it explains why i did not get any meat yesterday, even when killing creatures that should (in my mind) have dropped some... I was not harvesting them, was just picking up the stuff they were dropping... Will start harvesting properly tonight.
Bit of a tip for you, it can be a very lengthy process to level up domestics trader but, if you respec to Structures Trader you can grind super fast to 90, then respec to level 90 Domestics Trader.
You will need millions of resources however, more info here: Pawlins Guide to grinding Structures Trader
That is, if you want to powerlevel, if you want to take your time and learn the profession as you go, that's also a good idea.
I am currently evaluating the game, but I am usually more into a casual, enjoy the ride type of leveling rather than into powerleveling your way to end game in 2 days But If I see that game is not very interesting before reaching max level, I may reconsider.
I'm not sure what the other servers are like, but last night on Starsider i was walking into the cantina and a big group of imperial stormtrooper players had this big roleplay investigation going, lining up outside the cantina, and going in to fight rebels.
You can have 8 characters in total, two maximum on a galaxy. If you want more, then you must pay another sub on another account (i know :P)
My first I rolled a Smuggler and a Crafter toon. If you switch professions, you will have the same level as you did, unless you are changing from a combat toon to a non-combat toon (or vice-versa).
It's a wonerful game to check out, I did the trial three years ago and loving every minute today still
Negative Rumours and opinions about this game are typically false and come out of people who are "veterans" and haven't played in years. You'll have fun; very different from almost any MMO
Also, i always loved SWG because there was MORE to do than combat. Well it feels like it at least. Space of course, and Housing...not to mention whole Planets to just immerse in! The community is loving and wonderful, and will go along with much!
Housing was a big drawer for me
^^ looking outside my house while i'm having fun making it and unpacking into it
Due to plenty of veteran trial periods, it would be much more accurate to say that the veterans haven't paid in years. We are generally still quite familiar with the game as it currently operates. We simply don't think it holds a candle to the versions that existed before LA/SOE had a brain-f@rt that they could replace us with some vast new WOW-kiddie player base.
