If you live in the USA Newegg.com is probably your best bet for getting the most for your money.I would probably go heavy on the MB and the CPU if you plan to keep it awhile (3 years or more, dont skimp on this part). You can always get a cost effective GPU as they always being developed at higher performance at lesser cost. ie ... a video card today that sells for $200 will probably outperform a video card from 2 years ago that retailed for $ 500 to 600.
this forum is much better suited for your question. Hopefully a mod will move this thread over so you can get quick and quality answers.

Another good online store is run by NCIX, they are a Canadian company and also have an online store for US customers as well, the good thing about NCIX is that theyt price match the competition; here is their US store -- of course I am assuming you're in the US:

premade or making your own? premade go too ibuypower.com. built it yourself go to tigerdirect.com or newegg.com reason is say both is one will have specials the other doesnt so shopping both will save money. for $600 you can build a high end kick butt comp thats way better than premade.
You should see all the specials NCIX does, uually on a weekly basis...sometimes even same day specials; they do tend to have a lot of bundle specials all the time though!

800-1000?
like someone else posted, get the best motherboard you can as well as CPU. If you can swing it, get a motherboard thats i7 compatable and put in a CPU that doesnt blow your budget. You can upgrade that later very easily. Id also suggest a 600w power supply with no less than a 32a 12v rail. Dont skimp on your motherboard or your power supply. Theyre probably the two most vital components, get a reputable brand and not some junk.
here. Just spent like 10 minutes putting this together. hell I may buy it myself
