I think a lot of people were waiting on a NA server, but since it doesn't look like it will be released anytime soon, and character transfers are even farther away, most people are looking at new games like Mortal and others since the curiosity is gone. People have seen the game for what it is and some love it, some hate it.
Regardless, the 'new shiny product' factor is gone and people looking for a new game have other more seemingly stable and established choices on the table.
A lot of people wanted a new PVP game, which is why there was so much interest in DF. Unfortunately AV was simply unable to deliver on things that larger and richer developers are able to handle.
Thus we have the game we have today where a fairly small number of people really enjoy the style while the majority are moving on to the next 'big' thing.
The next big thing, for PvP?
I keep wondering about this: WoW managed to construct a viable business and product model of PvE. Since DAoC, no one ever deliver a comparable model for PvP. Is that something to do with the whole idea or implementation of PvP, or is it the fault of the developers?
Full fledge PvP in SB ended in a mess and ppl blame the developer. DF tried that again and falled equally decisively, and people again blame the developer. If this trend repeats itself, maybe we have to reconsider, is the current idea of full fledged PvP viable? Fury, GWs, those tried a different approach but never seems to ignite fever of the PvP community.
DAoC's mode is restricted PvP, namely RvR. It worked for DAoC, it does not work so well for WAR. Maybe RvR is easily to implement than full fledged PvP?
L2 was once quite a success till bots and grinds wears out the community. Aion comes and well looks like it has quite a success in Asia. Will that be the kind of PvP that can be implemented?
I don't know. Since DAoC, I have never seen a good PvP game that makes sense (I have yet to try Aion). Seems to me, the quality of the community is always the first problem encountered. That triggers the "bad player drives out good player" phenomena and very soon, gameplay went downhill from there. Maybe that is what separates RvR from full fledged PvP. Is that true?
I think many MMO gamers want to play with someone else instead of a stupid AI. If I want to play exclusively against an AI, I have thousands of good solo game to kill the rest of my life. However, when we actually look at the market for games in which we really play with or against a true human, very few stands out to have a wide appeal. What that means is not that I need to play a game with wide appeal, it means for each of us, the choice is short, and our choice elements are very different. Your favourite will most likely not be the same as mine, and it becomes very sensitive and prone to war of words, as you will say my game sucks and so on.
pls pls dont let it die. I need my laughs every day reading the forums and this community needs this mmo as a home so as not to ruin other games. The sad part is every day there are less and less threads for darkfail.
if it dies at least there are better games to play right now like Diner Dash which is a rockin game!
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I mostly agree with what the "is dead" camp say, but theres a minor detail that negate this: If adventurine want more subs, all that need to do is to make easier for people to join his game, having the link to the "create account page" in the frontpage of the website. Now the join page is "semi-secret" and the only way to locate it is googling for it. I guest Adventurine is ok with the number of current subs, since is near the limite of the current hardware, and want to "reopen" the game as soon theres a NA server. There will be much more players on the NA server than in the EU server, since the population of NA is soo big. I expect this "regrown" of Darkfall.. And of course, this is not final, the game needs more "games" inside to make people that don't want to pvp or harvest/craft interesting. Not everyone want to guild-pvp, If nothing is added, the game will die in a few years.
lol, yes the game is dead! Sarcasm aside, the game is far from being an ultima online for the moment, but it has a lot to offer to quite a lot of people. People has to accept now that they are paying for an incomplete feature set, and the game is not released. It is a paid beta phase. Aventurine should have been honest and announced it.
At the moment, there is not any sort of communication between the company and the playerbase, after everypatch, you get patch notes. That's all. Nothing at all, no future plan, no announcement on missing features etc. I am over 35, and this game is by far the most horrible managed game I've ever seen in my life in terms of community management.
There are quite a lot of people playing the game, I am running into people even at the remotest locations on the big map, and hiding in a corner while resource gathering, and there are again queues to join the server (who knows, aventurine may be the ones creating them ).
Zerg alliances are splitting, and politicaly there appears to form up more balanced alliances not relying on mindless numbers.

Thus all the game is dead posts. I dont believe its dead, but i dont see how it can make any kind of money, even leaving aside the fact that AV gets much more then what a normal developer/publisher would get from box sales. The majority of the players who purchased the game no longer subscribe, for various reasons, some valid some not. The developers are falling into the same traps inexperienced ones have done before, as you stated, which only drives players away. Currently the game is completely out of balance and in a pretty bad state, once you look past the surface of it.
On the business end, AV is completely incapable of running DF. The infrastructure, community relations, account management, annoucements like NA-1 are all contributing to a picture that is a complete mess. its clear the business model they are using has either failed or is on the verge of failure in reguard to numerous aspects. The overhead in relation to the gross revenue has to be in the red on a monthly basis, let alone the initial overhead of the design.
No one can state for sure if the game will fail or not. The current situation looks pretty bleak though to anyone with a brain and who has even a minimal interest in business & economics. Personally, i dont see the game surviving as more then very extreme niche game, with very few players, without some kind of relief , either via extensions of loans, new investors, or goverment interference.

I agree to all. I could be the one writing your post really. The only think I am trying to figure out is that, either aventurine is the most unexperienced company I have encountered upto now, or they are keeping their lips tight to have some sort of flashy appearance on the scene with NA server's and a path addressing a couple of lacking features and problems fixes. Otherwise it will be a dead meat in short time and may be remembered in the future as it had a good potential and wasted by bad management. I stil find it very hard to believe that aventurine is so inexperienced and do not know what they are doing.
But as you've said, every sign shows the reverse... Well we'll see in very short time
Ugh ok some people here think that a game is dead if they do not play themselves anymore. Thousands play DF and are having fun, which is the most important bit in playing that is.
And another important thing is that at this moment in time DF is the best game of its type on the market (that is new-ish that is). When other games join this market, if they are better for me, then sure I will jump ship, but for now its either old games like UO or Aion, lol......or I can have fun in Darkfall....I mean its the only MMORPG where I can actually use stealth rather *you are now invisible* spell nonsense. Anyway...see you in game
Thousands played TR, AA, E&B too, but thousands is just not enough for an MMORPG. You need tens and hundreds of thousands for a MMORPG not to die.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

You are both correct. Except you have underestimated Tasos's ability to lie. The ONLY reason he mentioned the NA servers, was to stir up community debate, to sell that community activity to his investors, for a NA server or additional staying time. Before he is booted.
There will be no North American server, we all know this. Though, some dumbtards might have re-subed thinking they are coming -or- are holding on, posting, etc.
The increased forum activity brings in added demographics and Tasos likes to sell ideas, not actual products.
"No they are not charity. That is where the whales come in. (I play for free. Whales pays.) Devs get a business. That is how it works."

I think the hardware limitation thing is a ruse.
I think they're playing a delicate balancing act - they need cash to keep going, so have to sell the game, but are aware of its many problems and the bad reputation the game has. They open the floodgates and let everyone in, and the game will get so trashed that they'll be beyond any hope of recovery.
Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, etc. etc. We all know the fate of mmos that release before they're finished.
