I only tried 2 classes, mage (lv.6 or 7) and scout (lv.4). Again, note that this is purely my opinion and thoughts.
Note - I define engaging to be something that keeps my focus/attention (which implies that it's at least somewhat entertaining).
Mage
I usually play mages exclusively, but MMOs lately have made the mage classes rather stale. The mage class in Aion appears to be mainly about just keeping distance from the opponent. They have root, slow-downs, and nukes. I found this to be really boring, especially since every game retains this aspect (i.e. keeping distance) of mages.
At least in Ragnarok Online, there was the aspect of positional and locational casting (e.g. - firewall, ice wall, thunderstorm, safety wall, etc.). And the fact that you have to aim with every spell added to the engaging factor. Of course, all of these worked for an isometric game and may not translate well or needs to be reworked for a 3rd person game. And I am hoping for more engaging/complex combat mechanics in future games than in previous games/MMOs.
Scout
I found it surprising that I enjoyed the combat for this class as much as I did, given that the mechanics are rather simple. The attacks which gain huge advantages for attack from behind, and the movement of the player's character affecting damage bonus (or dodge bonus or defense bonus) really added to the engaging factor of the combat. It's a very simple system, but I found it engaging enough to be enjoyable, albeit I would hope for (much) more complexity in future games.
Concluding Remarks
Well, those are my thoughts. I didn't find the other aspects of the game very interesting (but the graphics are quite nice). Anyways, I wonder how you guys feel about the engaging factor of the different classes in Aion.

I hate to say it, but you need to play more before you can decide. I played in Chinese beta when the patch was released to make it English and I did what you did. Got a few chars to 8ish and quit.
Been playing in the beta weekend events and I have to say that your class doesn't start until 10. At level 10 when you pick your main profession you get your first specialty skills. By 20 it's a whole new game. I'm not saying it will def. be for you, but stick it out a bit to see how it turns out. It only takes a few hours to hit 10.
care to elaborate on how the mechanics change? Furthermore, I've read through the skills list for just about every class...
However, the point that the game is worth playing or not is NOT my intent for this thread. This thread is meant for discussing the engagin factor of the classes and the way they play with specified mechanics to back up opinions...
what you tried aren't the actual classes, those are just the arch-types. at 10 you choose, the classes are completely different from what you start out as. and honestly idk why they had us only play from 1-10 complete waste of a "preview" in a game where you don't even get to pick your real class till 10. or one of the things people want to try ,flying, taht also doesn't start till 10. and the only down side to Aion i seen from playing the korean retail and chinese retail is the starter areas are pretty boring till you hit 9 and do the class/flying quest, wich gets you out of the boring area..lol
deffinitly not bashing the game i have the CE on preorder and love the game. and we're not in the starter area very long, like a day tops, so i can over look it easily.
Scout class is pretty fun, I enjoy it. I've almost always played melee classes in these games and Aion does pretty well with melee. The mage class is pretty standard fare, I can't really tell you if it's better or worse than other spellcasting classes in other games as they all play pretty similar. To get a true gauge on how engaging the classes are we'll have to wait for them to raise the beta level cap, 10 levels is not nearly enough.
^This is what I was trying to say.
well i can't elaborate on a Sorccorer i never made one i went Spirit Master wich is way different from the Mage you play at the start. i mean its a pet class wich i'm sure says alot. but its mechanics are best pet class i've played, and deffinitly coolest looking pets i've seen in any game. and the fact that the pets appearance changes as you lvl kinda pushed me to lvl up more to get the next cool one. they have alot of CC, stuns, root, snares, fear, all of wich have AoE versions. life taps, debuffs, dots,dd nukes.
you mentioned you liked the Scout, well Assassins and rangers are alot of fun, tho i wouldn't play a ranger unless you have a friend to group up with to lvl faster. ranger needs some love at low lvls, they only have like 2 bow attacks till 16....zzzzzz. they reall pick up after that if you can stick it out.but their lvl 10 dp ability is very cool, they turn into a Mau that gives them like a super buff like +dps,+attack speed,+movement speed all like 30% forget atm and aionsource doesn't have it listed for some reason.
now assassins was alot of fun, kicks and melee moves and a type of nuke wich was cool forget the range on it, you carve signets into the mob through some of your attacks and then you detonate them with the "nuke". kicks aren't like WoW rogues weak ass kick, they are a part of their skill rotation and do really nice dmg.honestly if they didn't use daggers and was barefist i would compare them more to a Monk type fighter class with all the flips and kciks they do, totally sick
