I know that Korea pulls idle threats often, mostly it's seen as sabre rattling. However they are now threatening nuclear action against us. Is this just an amped up version of what we have seen in the past? Or do we need to take this situation a bit more seriously?
If we choose to take this as a serious threat what actions are needed on our part?

If they start using their spent centrifuges to create 100 or more nukes then you can start worrying.
I'm more concerned with how this could trigger a World War 3.
No country will back NK if they decide to nuke a U.S city.
No country will back NK if they decide to nuke a U.S city.
Except Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and probably a few countries in the Middle East. And although I'm sure they'd condemn it publicly, I wouldn't be surprised if some leaders in China and Russia would be privately gleeful.
Why would China wanna nuke one of it's biggest customers. Don't ya know everything is made in China? :P
Everytime I hear about North Korea I laugh. They won't do anything.
They get way more attention than they deserve. Alot of those little countries have a serious case of short man syndrome.

Whats their problem? Why don't they just give in and open their borders to American companies to exploit cheap labor?
I mean really, Nukes are so 1980s.....
Dictators dont respond to time outs
Nukes can give small countries an ace in the hole. Look at how tiny North Korea has been able to rattle its sabre toward the US and get away with it. They give countries a lot more latitude in terms of diplomacy on the world stage.
All the world's a stage.
North Korea pulls stunts designed to antagonize and test new US presidents like clockwork. I think their threats are hot air, they only want to see what the current administration will do. Their administration may be maverick, but they're not stupid. An legitimate threat of nuclear war would turn almost all their most potent allies against them, most significantly China. As the emerging behemoth, China's interest is in stability in their sphere of influence. A nuclear attack would be a major thing, and I'm sure North Korea knows if they actually cross the line they will suffer from all circles.
World War 3 will never happen.
Our economies are s0o globalized that if the USA went down, China would collapse and vice versa.
If any large chunk of the third world was lost, we wouldn't have the raw resources to manage, and our economies would crumble either china or the USA would go first, then see the above.
If Canada was to get blown up, the more than half of the USA would be out of power, the infrastructure would fail from being overdawn and brownouts would probably kill all power in the USA.
The USA's economy would crumble with no power, then China would crumble because they are so invested in the USA.
if the USA and China goes down, nobody but the farmers will live... Untill things decend into anarchy and we try to recouver with local economies, in which case our top heavy economies in the first world would leave the vast majority of the world with no work, no land to create food.
Canada could probably manage, escpecially the coastal areas because of our smaller population density, but then again the rush of people from cities to try to find places to live off of might push into the Rural Areas causing countries like Japan into self-warring factions.
Damn... brb writing wicking sci-fi novel.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
For now I don't think theirs anything to really worry about, but then again I don't keep up with everything N. Korea is up to lately. :P
edit: Gif don't work
The best thing the US and the rest of the world can do is ignore NK and just watch from a distance. NK has been using these tactics since the end of the Korean War, nothing new here. They are out to get aid from the west and that is it. The more western media reports the more we'll see this stuff from NK. They are a moot country. They know it - end of story.
at this point in time we can't afford another conflict. we're already in Aghanistan and Iraq although very limited its still costing billions. with the way the economy is going how Obama is bankrupting the Government, another war will just throw us into a deeper recession. The only way i see how this can be dealt with is aligning other nations against North Korea, dropping more sanctions on them and getting the international community to condemn their activities. Personally i say we go in there and wipe that regime out and get rid of this N. Korea/S. Korea conflict once and for all, its been going on way too long but, the current circumstances in my opinion we just can't afford it. The real question is can we afford not to do anything? With a radical regime you can't rule out the possibility of a pre-emptive strike especially since now they have nuclear weapons at their disposal its not a laughing or a joking matter. At this point North Korea is pointing a gun at us threating to shoot. its a standoff.
We would have to worry more if they had massive reserves of oil underneath NK.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
I really don’t think much of anything will happen.
If North Korea launches a missile at Hawaii, and (assuming it actually clears the pad this time) it does track toward Hawaii, the US Navy & USAF will monitor the track.
If the missile looks like it’s actually going to hit Hawaii (mythical home of The One), we will shoot it down, but we’ll be the bad guys for defending US soil.
Remember, in the UN Liberal Utopia mindset, big wealthy Western countries are not allowed to defend themselves against poor little “helpless” countries.
Personally, I think it’s amazing that North Korea has the money for sophisticated missile systems and nuclear power plants, considering they can barely feed most of their brain-washed population.
We'd all like to see you shoot it down.
That's the best way to steal Korea's thunder in my opinion.
If you have the capability that is.
Here in Britain, nuclear weapons came before food security too. Korea has the right idea.
Building an arsenal is never the correct solution when it comes before feeding your people.
Ever.
Maybe that is why they do that. They know if you strech your army more you could be in deep trouble. My guess is they will push their luck to the end.
this bitch is on its way to Alaska,Nk has to get threw 3 layers of defense before it makes to the states.
Always giving the communist more power than they deserve.the shoot down rates are a 90% effective rate and they are climbing.
Kinda like saying if NK blows up the citizens will be flocking to the North (China) instead of running to the south where most of their family's are and freedom lies.
Trade in material assumptions for spiritual facts and make permanent progress.
Time to worry.

If the fragile truce between North and South Korea turns into a hot war, then it's anybody's guess what will happen. Aren't we bound by a treaty to defend South Korea in the event of an attack from the North? That would involve us in war on three different fronts. I think it would also mean the biggest outbreak of military action around the world since WWII.
What we need right now is calm competent leadership at the highest level of our government. Unfortunately...
