Thanks to all who shared with their thoughts about the mobile mmorpg!

First of all i don't say that mmorpg future is mobile, i just think that another formats like smartphones are ready now for some good mmorpg. Most new smartphones have more higher resolutions than common mobiles. Smartphones also can run bigger applications like PC run in mid 90's ( and that's not simple mobile games like mobile java or brew games dominated now on mobiles, you can find for smartphones some ports of PC games like Doom, Quake, Ultima Underworld, Mist and more ). As for connection cost, I need to say that developers must do optimization for minimizing game traffic. Mobile mmorpg can use much less your mobile internet traffic as common you spend while surfing on your mobile.

As for game communication with other players in game, I agree that it's can be hard trying killing mobs and typing sms at the same time, but it's possible :)

Also you can chat before grinding or while your group resting.

And at last you can get email based smartphone with qwerty keyboard ;-)

BTW i see that people already play rpg on handhelds and why don't play good mobile mmorpg lying on the comfortable sofa instead siting at chair before PC.

    AT LAST!
With that kill i've reached the honor rank of “just and noble defender of the human race”!

  • I don't think you can play MMORPG on your mobile phone very well. Cos you may be killed by monsters easily due to your bad control. What do you guys think?

    Maybe.

I wouldn't play a mobile MMO on itself.  However, if it was possible to work on some aspect of a MMO I am currently playing while on the mobile, then yes, I would buy a mobile in order to play while in the bus or waiting somewhere, but there must be a main MMO...and the mobile must just be a significant way to progress without been close to been as efficient as playing the real MMO.

So, a back-up access to developp my main character in a way or another while I can't play on computer.

In order to be successfull, it would in fact needs to be 2 differents MMOs, where you can work slightly on the other from the other gaming setting.  A mobile MMO want folks playing it for itself, but also folks playing it for the main MMO.  Anyway, just my 0,02.  I don't think it would be a good idea alone, on it own.  But I might be wrong.  Also, would it cost per minute/hour to play?  That could become quite expensive...

  • Well said.

I don't know if you know a stuff called Wii, you can use a controller and use your body to play a game.

If this could be implimented in to the MMORPG, i think it would be more fun. You can use your mobile as a screen, you can use the controller to act in game. That would be awsome.

If you still need to press keys in your moble phone, not a good idea.

In my opinion, absolutely not. I can't stand the whole text message thing as it is.

  • Yep. or maybe later when all MMORPGs are using audios instead of text, then it would be possible.

I think that for now, a cellphone shouldn't be used for mmorpgs because I don't think it could support the complexity and size of the game.  I think that maybe in a few years this could be more feasible based on what kinds of upgrades are made to the phones.  For now I'll just play on my computer and wait to see what happens.

I chose no.  The reason is obvious I would think.  I don't even enjoy playing tetris on a phone.  I agree adding a mobile phone aspect to MMORPG isn't a bad idea though.  Like the ability to access your character screen in Eve.  Access it on your phone so you can select skills to begin training while you are away.  Even I would go for that.

    You left out Android phones....

Yes, I would play some casual MMO on the phone, specially during boring staff meetings :)

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...

There's a fortune to be made in RMT once people start porting the browser-based MMOs to be useful/playable in a mobile window.

I voted no but IMO it may appeal to a mostly or largely to a more female audience but not exclusivly. I doubt a huge portion of the MMO community would prefere it. Some of the women I know like playing games on their phones but I raely/almost  never exp. guys playing on their phones.

i wonder which % of the world wide population has a mobile phone which is suitable to play anything else than a basic game. the only reason why i can play some basic ones is because they don't make models without them anymore, yes i'm always actually looking for the most basic models.

playing mmorpgs on mobile phones is about as anti-social as it gets imho because mobile phones were made to use while being mobile, therefore often in a social environment. you could just talk with the persons in real life instead of pretending they're not there and at home there's mostly a platform which is better suited to play games.

I do not beleve this Poll is of anny real intrest to the question.

    the poll should be..

1:-Yes, more MMo is good! I buy a new phone for it!

2:-Yea shure, I have some intrest.

    3:-Um.. dont know..

4:-No, unless its a exstension of a real mmo for pc/console.

5:-Na, dont think I would realy play it.. Got a pc/console.

    6:-No!, phone games stink!

    Or someting like it.

There are way to manny mobile phones and several OS to realy make a stable mmo . its grafic systems would be well.. fairly bad (as it will be compared to modernday mmo's)

To me the aswer would be 4. if it belongs to a  "real" mmo  ..it would not be a mmo on its own but more someting to manage your char/stuff

    my cents

I haven't been around here in quite a while, but this caught my eye.  I would definitely be interested in a WinMo MMORPG.  Something to do while passing the time and you're away from your comp.

I'd like an MMO on my LG Voyager. Something fun to do in the car or whatever.

Frankly, I'd much rather see a series of pseudo-MMORPGs with online connectivity come to handheld gaming systems like the PSP.

For example, I love Monster Hunter (an old PSO fan here), but I don't use Xlink Kai, so I'm forced to only play with RL friends since I don't want to buy a PS3. (Yes, I know it's not THAT difficult to configure Xlink; however, without built-in connectivity, many users will never play online. Well, most of my friends wouldn't, anyway.)

As the mobile phone display become bigger and bigger, Mobile MMO will be something attracting more users. Actually, we already see lots of MMO games coming up.

Recently, I've tried one MMO developed by WiSTONE on my Symbian phone, named Anrufen Online, it is really impressive. You can try it if you've a S60V3 device, the registration is free...

I am sure Square Enix covers every single platform in gaming and from what i hear mobile phone gaming is huge over seas.I know of one particular case of a guy literally making around a million bucks from a mobile phone game, not even a rpg.It was so incredibly simple but more so that the game was any good ,i think it was the timing of all the new phone releases and people were starved for something to do on it.

Personally i would not play 1 second of a mobile phone game, the first mobile phone i ever got is collecting dust.I look around in stores and see people driving and they all act like robots, they act like that cannot live w/o their phones. So in other words i can't stand any kind of mobile phone. If people actually bought them for emergency issues, then ya I'm ok with that, but nope they are nothing more than people that need their gossip box 24/7.Now to add gaming to that  piece of metal is adding to the epidemic.

Tiny screen. Tiny keys. Dont see it working with current tech.

Sure it will advance and the GFX can look great and all .. but its still a tiny screen and fumbling with tiny keys. If the screens / keypads got bigger then it would no longer really be a moblie phone.

When tech advances to the point that my mobile phone can "send" the images to a headset or set of raybands .. with a little wireless handheld controller .. sure sign me up .. until then I'll play on my nice big flat screen where I can actually see what the hell is going on :)

And people say that certain "kiddy oriented MMOs are bad for the genre?".

What would a mobile do it?  The UI alone would force a severe dumbing down of the game.

One man, a small pile of money, and the screwball idea of a DIY Indie MMORPG? Yep, that's him. ~sigh~
