if anything stands a chance at being a wowkiller its a decent starwars game . its a huge granchise already and has a massive potential user base . whether this is a decent starwars mmo remains to be seen . by the time this comes out though warcraft will already have had one massive body blow from aion . we might be talking about what the aion killer is going to be .
A scifi mmorpg isn't going to kill a fantasy based mmo.... not enough fans of scifi out there. the game is also already hyped to much, a WoW killer probably won't be a hyped up game like this.
Even tho' both of these games are mmorpg's, they are different genre. Sci-fi is not the "most wanted" thing on this type of gaming, most of the games are mmorpg, and will be.
There is, offcourse, some successful sci-fi mmorpg's, but I will say that ALL the fantasy based mmorpg's will stay dominant.
Anyway, im a Star Wars fan and hope that this game will get at least SOME players.
YES WoW with lightsabers will kill WoW. Get a clue, it's lucas way of merchandising off force users. The whole universe and the world within it mater no more, since what would be better then a bawing little pussy like Anakin going emo and killing children. It's called a loss of innocence. How you reacted to something the first time around wont be the same as it will react to you now. All the fancy graphicz and DX9000 with high level polygon counts and OMG AWESOME UBER PHYSICs still wont change the fact your playing rehashed garbage from things already done.
I don't think this game will kill wow. I wish folks would stop tring to make games to kill wow. I don't want to play wow, or play games that are a wow ripoff.
Now what this game might do is kill LOTRO, and I hope it does. Turbine has made a mess of things since moria. I am so looking forward to going back to something that I can deal with. I miss playing SWG, but soe ruined that game for me.
I agree with what the last 2 posts have stated , not a WOW killer just the same rehash of WOW and nothing more or innovative. Enough of the fanboi circle jerks please for this overhyped potential diaster.
ToR isnt really a game that would appeal to the average WOW player anyway, a few will try it for a few weeks just to see what the hype is all about (as long as theres nothing new happening in WOW that is!!) and then return to WOW again, if they ever left that is, just like all the other times when a new game came out (AOC ?), there is a place for scifi games, but for the moment, the consensus is that fantasy games are more fun, the other thing is, with the hype surrounding this game at the moment, living up to it is going to be something of a nightmare for bioware
Reason 1: This game is very much similar to Knights of the Old Republic, one of the best Star Wars games EVAH!!!! It's also made by Bioware, the makers of K.O.T.O.R., are making this game. Reason 2: This game will revolutionize MMOs because you will not feel like you are grinding, and the quests(called missions in The Old Republic)will not be like, "Go and kill 10 acklays" or "Collect one krayt dragon hide." The missions will be like, "Go slice into the computer to take over the ship." Reason 3: Several gaming sites have already written reviews on this game, and they are all good. One site even states,"As the force-choked trooper slides across the ground, clutching is neck, it becomes obvious; this game is a WoW killer."
Umm going by the last decade of SOE monumental shit pile games (EQ2, Vanguard, and the oh so original SWG) logic will deduce that this game will be another titanic waste of money and stomps all over reason number 2.
Why people hang on to these consistent disappointments is being studied by multi-billion dollar think tanks. You guys are like little kids that keep getting punched by by the bully that swears he wont do it...THIS TIME
Here is my prediction based on factual history of SOE games. It will be rushed to production, large amounts of content will be missing and 50% of the classes will be broken and unusable. It will have great graphics. Once the game patches come down and some assemblance of a game is revealed, the Developers will not listen to community suggestions for improvments and just start nerfiing classes until the game is broken again and then the rest of the poeple that have spent a long time leveling a character that they finally are starting to enjoy will see its entire mechanic system change as sony implements something to stop the droves of people sick of the bullshit rules from leaving.
Dont deny it, the last time Sony made a game in which the purpose of it was to actually have FUN was asherons call.

That's pretty much how it will be, i'm not going to get my hopes up t be only shafted yet again by SOE. No mmo will kill WoW but itself, blizzard is going the casual route with gimmicks to get people to play.

Dude what the hell are you talking about, this game has nothing to do with SOE. Absolutely nothing.
woops, you are right, I read a while back that it was going to be a joint venture with Bioware but I now see that Lucas Arts has stopped contracting with Sony.

What had sony to do with Asheron's Call 1 ?
i think it was turbine, actually at the time asherons call was a pretty good game, then II came out and it was rubbish... but comparing ToR to WOW is silly, its nearer to Guildwars, the central hub method where players meet etc, thats how they do it in DDO too, one of the reasons why its hard to classify this game as an MMO. certainly not in the same category as games like everquest even, im not sure that moving away from the persistent world thing is such a good idea either.
No point making claims this game will beat anything yet, they said that about every MMO thats come out since WoW and every one of them has failed in comparison, although some were okish in their own right. SWTOR if it doesn't live up to expectations will end up just another average MMO, that's why they need to come up with something new and not just rehash crap from the last 10 MMOS that have come out.

It will be fun for a play through or two, but there is no fesable replay value it seems... the story is too linear and too theme parky, you are like riding a roller coaster you can't get off the tracks even in the slightest.
Sounds like it'd have done better as a console online game, or even a small online game like Diablo.
This game won't kill WoW for one simple reason: Expectations. Like AoC and WAR peoples expectations are too high, so they think this game is the second coming of christ and quit wow/whatever game the are playing and plays this for a month or two, and after that they will go back to whatever it was they where doing before.
That is my guess and it looks like I'm not alone. It will be fun for a play through or two, but there is no fesable replay value it seems... the story is too linear and too theme parky, you are like riding a roller coaster you can't get off the tracks even in the slightest. Though I think "WoW-Killer" threads are now akin to discussions of Sasquatch and the Loch Ness monster, I would point out that you are "not alone" only on this forum full of MMO-haters in general. 99% of their target audience is totally pumped to play the game. Too much hype, too high of expectations....? Maybe, that could be a major problem.
But after watching the latest voice over video, you have to be really, really weird to not at least want to check the game out.
Star Wars: The Old Republic won't kill WoW, it probably might be a successful game, but it won't even kill Aion. Now, in the United States or North America it might pass WoW, but not worldwide.
2 problems with this
1. World wide? WoW just lost china and some parts of asia 4-6 million accounts world wide meaning that 50% of its Subs where over seas and are now gone.
2. Other then china the rest of the world make up about 15% of Subs, Wow is not very popular in Euorpe vs some of thier other MMo's including talks about Harry potter MMO in the works after Deadly Hollows movie.
Wow is loosing subs and has been on a decline for a few months so in my opnion wow killed it self like most good MMO's have.
i really really really really hope it does kill WoW. 2 reasons. Im sick of WoW and i love star wars ill be very disappointed if another star wars game takes a dive.
I am getting a little tired of people saying "OMG, this game is a WoW killer!" Why can't games exist simultaneously? I'm sure there will be some people who move over to SWTOR from WoW, but there is also going to be a lot of people who have never played WoW who join up with SWOTOR. An mmo does not need a billions subs to be successful.
And for those who actually want WoW to die, that is just a not-well-thought-out request. As gamers, we should want all games to be very successful. Because without a successful game to compete against, developers will not feel compelled to create a "better game," and then all we (the gamers) end up with is a bunch of steaming crap to deal with.
Let WoW continue being successful and let's also have other great games come out like SWTOR.

I actually might give this game a try then.
How would these games even compare?
The other one scifi with lightsabers in space and the other is fantasy with orcs and elves in wonderland.
and no it won't kill anything
