DX10: AoC and LotRo graphics

DeeweDeewe Member UncommonPosts: 1,980

LotRo was the first MMO to add DX10 support in a MMO, since then AoC added it and most players says it raised the bar.

Having played both of them I'd like to highlight a few points.

One of the major difference is AoC uses much more polygons than LotRo so you ends with more detailed characters and environments.

Also AoC uses more DX10 filters than LotRo, like the underwater lighting.

Still, overall LotRo nont only looks better but is much more polished.

Less character body customization in LotRo but more clothing customization with dyes and social clothing tabs.

Clothes textures are much better in LotRo. In AoC some textures look like you are watching the clothes textures with magnifying lenses so you can see the fibers.

Weapons hooks, guess everyone noticed how in AoC weapons and shields fly one feet behind your character back in the air.

Lacks of pants might be due to the lore but many players are still looking for pants in AoC.

Colors uniformity, in AoC the bright cartoonish blue priest robes does not fit the rest of the color settings, even worse are the green, blue bright hats that kills the immersion. These are only a few examples...

In AoC the horizon appears or disappear when you are standing and just turning around.

The physics on the grass in AoC is way too much. I guess if our characters were able to fart, the grass would bend over our mighty blow.

Bloom: activated it'll make your eyes bleed; deactivated there are still many NPC that makes you blind when you speak to them. Don't even try to read what they are saying.

For the comparison just wanter under trees near some water in LotRo and you'll be amazed at how everything blends perfectly.

In short AoC could have better graphics than LotRo but it really lacks polishing.

Funny I have found the differences between DX9 and DX10 graphics to be very minimal.  Even though I have a DX10 card, I deinstalled Vista and run strictly XP these days, my system runs much better and the games do too.  I don't miss the DX10 graphics much at all.

I have to agree OP.  I was disaapointed with the lack of polish to the AoC graphics as a whole while using DX 10 compaired to LotRO, reflections in the floor tiles, water surfaces, moving shadows - stunning.  I still think that LotRO avatars are lacking and this is where AoC shines, but the colors and details of avatar clothing in LotRO distracts you for the most part; the hands and feet models are terrible.

Same here. I have not seen DX10 such a difference in most games, so I went back to XP, too. Not worth the hassle of Vista. The max DX9 settings are very good already.

I don't understand the hassle with Vista.

    I have a 3.2ghz, 260something EVGA, and 4 gigs of RAM.

    I have no issues.

You guys are aware that Conan's DX10 client is a complete beta test right?. They didn't have enough testers on the PTR client so they pushed it to Live. With that said it's nowhere near complete. And even then it's still considerably better than LOTROs DX10 client. You're all of course more than welcome to disagree. Being wrong is a right.

Those that are saying that can not tell the difference between dx9 and dx10 are either lying or their blind.

or just google dx9 vs dx10

My understanding AoC DX10 is fully DX10 where as the LOTRO DX10 has only certain parts of DX10 blended in with DX9. Totally two different clients in AoC for DX9 and DX10.

This is correct. AoC has an entirely different client for dx10 (ageofconandx10.exe). The client was built from the ground up to support DX10. Unfortunately the early and somewhat stimmied launch has put a damper in the progression and completion of the client.

We probably won't see a fully code/feature complete DX10 client until Funcom launches their next MMO The Secret World.

I'm glad you understand, tends to lessen the sting.

AoC DX10 client has effectively more DX10 features than LotRo but it leads to much higher GPU load.

Also, be it DX10 or not textures and colors are way more coherent in LotRo, all fits the pattern, whereas AoC...

no question in my mind, LOTR has better graphics than AoC. The environment just blends together so perfectly in LOTR. In Aoc a bush and grass stand out like its been painted into the scene. AoC has better avatar graphics though but overall LOTR has best graphics of any MMO to date

I can agree with this. The color pallatte in LOTRO seems more real life than AoC, but the characters in LOTRO are so bad they feel out of place in the environment. Don't get me wrong I love and play LOTRO when not playing AoC.

I can notice the difference, and I have had no problems with vista?  I dunno, I think the biggest "problem" I had was turning off the "allow this program to run", which was quick and easy.

    Maybe I am lucky?

Of course AoC DX10 puts more stress on the GPU than Lotro DX10. Just like Doom3 puts more stress on a GPU then Doom1. You pay to play.

  • I like the DX10 mode in AoC just my machine is a little under spec so only use it for looking at now and again and the odd screenshot, maybe once I upgrade I can play with it. I do watch a friend play in that mode though on his new rig and really the God rays and enviornmental effects though really make the world come to life for me...it just looks much more immersive in DX10 mode with that cool lighting.

The shadows could use a little more work though, and I'm not ennough of a graphics junkie to appreciate the more technical options.
