well put...I like how you incorperate the lore into your reason for mercilisly slaughtering the asmodians
What is this "lore" you mention? I speak only the truth! (heh... clearly, I'm dying of Aion withdrawals... going to cplay C-Aion to hold me over... until, yes... the beta this weekend).
We had an informal legion meeting RE: crafting tonight. It's all over now. So much worse than crack. ^_^
Aion is RvR. It is a war. If you play anything but KOS you are only hurting your own faction. I know I'd be pretty pissed if I was getting killed by the opposing faction and I see one of my own come near, stop, and then just run off.
"Oh sorry, the guy you were fighting is too low," is not an excuse.
Luckily its a game.
Honestly though I'll probably take a more hard-line approach to helping faction members in US Aion simply because you actually suffer loss when you die in PvP in Aion. As it stands now I just don't care in C-Aion.
But most games, where there is no loss.... well yeah I got no problem watching someone from the same faction die as long as it was a fair fight. Hell, I'll even stop and watch and then congratulate the victor on a fight well fought before I head off on my way.
Why? Because nothing is more irritating to me, as a PvPer, than being denied a hard fought victory in a fair fight than some high level swooping in and taking a good, fun, challenging fight and turning it into a joke. Some people get pissy... but others get pissy when you interfere regardless, so whatever.
Strange thing, but I usually follow a different PVP etiquette with each character I roll.
Usually, if I'm playing a stealth class, I will not ever attack a lower level (even 1 level lower) unless attacked. Hey, my ganker-toons are honourable! :P
Whereas most of my healers turn out to be pretty blood-crazed, in contrast. Well, I guess I just don't like the idea of a benevolent healer So if roll a cleric here, I'll probably attack anyone regardless of level and numbers. Expect many lowbie kills as well as suicide attacks from this one.
And on most toons, it's gonna be a spur-of-the-moment thing.
But to me, the real etiquette is not indulging in *griefing*. I won't camp an area to kill the same toon over and over or to sabotage the same player's quest over and over and over.... I won't put a ganking squad together to go after single players.... And no, I don't care if these make sense in the gameworld or not.

Heh, I find myself doing the same sort of stuff. For instance my warrior type toons almost never engage when another player is fighting mobs. They'll wait til the fights over and the bad guy has healed himself up before engaging... alot of time's they even /emote to show the person they intend to engage.
My assassin's on the other hand will use whatever advantage they can possibly get... because, they're ya know... assassins.
I honestly have no idea why I do this though. Some leftover part of me when role-playing in game's was actually expected.
BAH! my opinion in all this should i not or should i is, if game says those are your enemy then you need to kill your enemy,
its stupid to made a game focused on massively pvp and then for somereason when some group is doing some quest you need to stand and honor them, ifits a pure war situation in real life , your enemy is in your land doing something they not supposed to do you just wave your hand and say i honor you carry on.
for all this group killing quest nonesense you should have closed maps to do that where enemy players cannot enter if not
hey, everyhting is depend what you feel to do then. developers didnt wanna stop you from killing the group people doing group quest.
and for one thing i wanna say to aion, it should have had closed maps for each side to train in peace and abyss as a warzone only wich opens like at friday to sunday or something.
developers srew up just a little things in game have to say like in lord of the rings online, if they had allow players to play orcs or humans at start and the pvp would be the same as warhammer online just take the rvr zones away and focus the only map there is to monsterplay it would have been great game.
so if developers dont wanna stop you doing those things in game why you should follow some stupid etiquette then?
in not a ganker i most definetly dont like when killed while doing quest but i do understand if players do this while its possible.

"Oh sorry, the guy you were fighting is too low," is not an excuse.
The chances that someone actually care about the level of the guy you were fighting is probably zero.
The excuse is usually "Sorry, I didn't know if those guys was higher than me or not, but they "looked" strong"
Plus if someone is actually righteous player type, they would help you either way, at least the ones that actually care. If someone does not care, then they probably are not even the righteous type to begin with.
Well your point is duely noted, but the example was a bit strange.

Your choice to make the clerics more blood-thirsty makes perfect sense. I can imagine some zealous religious maniac, believing the other faction = demons opposed to Aion that must be vanquished. Plus, I can see those clerics acting quite ruthlessly toward the other faction. Some of the most violent and atrocious wars in human history were fought (partially, if not wholly) over religious differences.
I like your thinking with Assassins too. That's more like a hunter's code where the snare is as important as the actual kill.... there's a nobility to it with hand to hand fighting as well, where the religious fanatic just smites and maybe whacks you with a mace at the end, thinking "kill 'em all and let Aion sort 'em out afterwards!"
ooh yea...I forgot about the...Abyss point (?) loss for dying in PvP...yup...every Asmodian will fall before my blade...or I'll die trying.

It's because that's the part of us that still remembers how FUN it is to use your imagination and invent backstory and motivations for why you are doing what you are doing in a virtual setting.
I've read a fair amount of Aion's lore, and it is rich enough that you can really throw yourself into the role you are playing if you just let go and let your brain run wild. I hope you find a niche where you can do that too, because the gamers who don't keep that splash of RP spirit alive are missing some awesome fun.
there is actually depth and story giving you motivation other than "kill everything that moves" in pvp...at least in the abyss. you will be fighting IN the dungeons over loot with the OTHER faction, not just your party, as well as for dominance over "castles" that your legion can set up...or at least that's what I got out of all the reviews and stuff.

hmm I think it depends on what your mood is like or what you are after at that moment.
Killing players in Aion only gives AP so you might not auto hunt red names if you are after exping. Sometimes you log onto the game and want to finish 3 quests which will give you a lvl up and allow you to get a nice piece of gear for completion. It would be frustrating if your quest/mission area is camped by enemy fraction waiting to "kill all red names".
Other times you need someting like 200 more AP for an item/gear. You might head out of town and kill any red names you see to quickly gain the AP you need. Most of the time it depends on individual prefrences, some numb-nutt would drop everything and go chase an enemy player just because they are red name. Some would carry on with their grinding/hunting unless they have a reason to chase the red names.
I (rank 9 Gladiator) was happily grinding away lvl30 Balaur mobs in Abyss for the green crafting meterials they drop. I can just about handle 3 at once max (have to use all healing stuff) and make it through. At one time I was fighting 2 mobs, managed to kill them both with about 25% HP left (planning to sit down and regen). Some Rank 6 sorc decided to land where I was and started nuking me, I was almost a gonner. Used NPC potion, HP buff, Abyss potion and I was back up arround 3/4 HP. Went upto Sorc hit 2 times, 1 hit was a knock down so I did my cripiling cut (his shield was down by then), Immobolized in air, knocked down, used DP skill (I had DP since i was grinding and i only use it when im in trouble). He was toast in no time.
After the fight I was quite disappointed, I didn't see the point in him trying to jump me when I was low and ended up loosing 165 AP. A r6 tring to gank a r9, I think he was one of those people who just kill anything with a red name without any reason, maybe that's how they get their ranks, who knows. Anyways, at that point of time he wasted my time, my resources and his time.
My point is, I personally don't always target enemy fraction unless I have a reason to. At times I just wana get on with quest/mission and I will just do those for my rewards. At times I need fast abyss points and butt into any fights i see to steal some AP.
One thing Aion doesn't get much credit for is the power of intimidation, you never know your oponent's level, add it to a death penalty and you get a regulated PvP. In this game, there are systems helping the intimidation, such as the gear swapping feature, some people buy abyss armors, placing their skins on lower level equipment in order to sell them overpriced, people buy it, because it provides a safer leveling proccess in the abyss, and also makes oponent run beforehand. Nobody is willing to risk their abyss points mindlessly after reaching certain ranks, so there's a proccess of thinking before jumping over someone.
People will know your level. They will alt tab, look up your name on Aion Armory and know exactly what gear and level you are and deduce from that whether to gank you. Of course I'm not sure we will get such a website in the western market but Korea has it.
alt tabbing in the abyss/rift might not be a good idea 90% of the time :P
All I can really do is laugh at you, boy are you in for a real surprise.
I fail to see how I am in for a real suprise. Maybe I didn't make it clear but I do not expect anyone to show any sorta pvp etiquette nor do I want to force one on anyone... I was just wondering if anyone actually has one.
**(These are purely hypothetical suitations assuming no one else is around)**
Like I said if im with a group of 6 and I see a 1v1... we'll let them finish. We may kill him after, but we'll let him enjoy his 1v1. (Oh and I do relate to someone's mention earlier of people complaining they wanted help or they wanted to just 1v1, but you'll learn who runs solo etc).
If im with a group of 6 and i see 2 groups fighting, we will let them finish. We won't assjam them. Will we kill them afterwards? Most likely.
Keep in mind this isn't just etiquette to the opposite faction, but to your faction as well. In both suitations if i were Elyos, i'd be letting other Elyos finish their fight. But if in the future those same people latch onto any even fights I have, i'll do the same to theirs.
***
In this type of server pvp you will know your enemy player names. I don't really have much to lose as you'll learn about each person. Once again, just a personal thought. I know it is not practical nor do I want to enforce it on anyone. Was simply wondering what you all think, and you were kind enough to share your thoughts, regardless what it is.
I honestly would be shocked if any Asmo or Elyos showed my group any sort of etiquette.
from my days in DAOC if we saw 2 folks having a 1 on 1 we left them alone, same thing if we saw 2 groups fighting. We enjoyed having nice fair fights, and tried to let others have theirs. It was rather amusing when we'd be fighting another group, have another group of our realm assjam, we'd pull off, the group we were fighting would kill the group that hit, they'd rest up and rez real fast, then we'd go back tof ighting. But it all depends on your play style and your goals. Some folks are just there to kill regardless of odds, numbers, etc. Some of us like a fight where the opponent actually has a chance.
This, I will never interrupt a 1 on 1. If me ally lose I will even wait for my foe to get back at 100%. Fair fight are fun.
I only kill players that I benefit from killing. Whether because I gain points from them or because they are farming an area that I happen to need something from. I won't go out of my way to kill a lowbie, nor will I kill one I happen to be passing by out of spite. As an aside, I will assist a player of my faction who is being ganked, regardless of level. I will not however, assist a player of my faction who ganked someone and is now on the losing side of things.
And you decide all this within a few seconds using an abacus or calculator? Do you message the enemy and ask them if the person they are attacking just ganked one of their lowbies?
I think more to the point, if you are going through a rift and you can see, "way over there" some low lvl player collecting iron or you see an area in the abyss that is known for a low lvl quest, do you go out of your way to obliterate them or do you head to an area with more challenging game play.
This is not to say I haven't ganked in games. I have. But I hated it. However, when someone declares war on you you have to step up the pressure. and if the situation demanded it it would just happen.
If one seeks to gank lowbies, well, that is just not to my taste. i can't derive enoyment from that.

I've only ever played 2 games past lets say 2 weeks and those were SWG (03-05) and WOW (05-09 on and off).
In SWG it was see red hes dead, I didn't care if the guy was a dancin' chef, there was a since of pride in it that you were fighting the good fight for your side.
In WOW I intially came with the same mindset, leveling on Warsong in the early days of the game it was a pretty hetic scene, but it wore off quick, there was no pride in fighting the good fight for your side, it eventually became ugh I just wanna level this guy to 60 already.
I really have never been much into PvP other than going to lowbie zones in WoW to help kill griefers that just kill the quest givers over and over ad nausum. I love the look and play of this game though and am going into it with the intention of becoming a convert. To answer the OP inquiry though I would most likely attempt to kill anyone that I run against but would never go out of my way to kill a lower level or grief people as I wouldn't find that challenging in the least.
My philosophy if your red and your an enemy in the abyss... I dont care what you are your dead. I dont care what level you are or what gear you have or what rank you are if your red your dead.
I dont even care if your michael jackson, if your red your dead.

I have to mostly agree with this guy. I played on Modred in DAoC, open PvP. I generally left all 1v1 fights alone in this type of environment. If someone was really low level I wouldn't touch them. Granted, if I had a really bad day at work I may slaughter them just because I could. However, in Aion we can't tell levels for the most part so not as much of that happening unless you purposely use a Rift to navigate to the lower level PvE zones. I don't see any fun in that at all.
Back to the 1v1 for a second. I plan on playing an Asmo cleric and this isn't FFA PvP. So if I see a fellow Asmo in a fight I will let him try to handle it himself, but If he looks like he is about to die I will heal him. No sense in giving free points to the Elyos when I can help. I do the same thing in other games that have Realm/Faction based PvP. I normally playing a healing class and I'll let my realm mate attempt to win on his own, but if the situation looks dim I will help out. At that point both parties already know who would have won without my help, and I don't like seeing fellow realm mates die.

I'm not sure how my example was strange considering it was taken from exactly how some people on this thread said they are planning on acting in-game.

This, I will never interrupt a 1 on 1. If me ally lose I will even wait for my foe to get back at 100%. Fair fight are fun.

Allowing your Ally to die is just wrong.
agreed...thankfully my guild the Archangels will be there on the Elyos side, it's part of our CoC (code of conduct) to aid all Elyos if they are in trouble.
leader of "The Archangels." A friendly guild looking to dominate the abyss, strike fear into the Asmodians, and lend a helping hand to all those native to Elysia.
