When you invest in sonmething you get some or all your money bvack, the people who bought into the beta for a sense of "elitism" there money is gone, they will never get that back. That is all they bought, a sense a of being "elite"
Oh really? So how about say Enron? How about many people that invested in what their brokers recommended and lost their ass last summer in the markets? Tons of people invested into real estate and can't even give their property away today. Such a good "investment"
You are smart enough to know that "invest" has several meanings and people use the term all the time to describe things they buy. Hell hardly anything returns a profit that people "invest" in.

Yet I never heard anyone saying "I invested in a game". Unless they mean they actually bought some stocks from a company developing said game.
The pre-purchase is not an investment, it is a pre-purchase and nothing else. We give money to the developers but we will never get any investment returns, ever. Contrary to stocks where you might get some return on your investment.
From Wikipedia:
"Investment or investing[1] is a term with several closely-related meanings in business management, finance and economics, related to saving or deferring consumption. Investing is the active redirection of resources: from being consumed today, to creating benefits in the future; the use of assets to earn income or profit."
Or if you are one of those that don't trust Wikipedia. Random online dictionary:
"Definition 1
In finance, the purchase of a financial product or other item of value with an expectation of favorable future returns. In general terms, investment means the use money in the hope of making more money.
Definition 2
In business, the purchase by a producer of a physical good, such as durable equipment or inventory, in the hope of improving future business."
"Patrons of the arts." Dear God, just when I think I've seen and heard it all, someone has to prove me wrong. Noone cares how you spend your money. But trying to relate paying in advance for a video game that may or may not ever release to the advancement of culture and sophistication through art is ridiculously entertaining.
Yes i have to agree. First time ive heard "Patron of the Arts" used to justify spending money on a preorder. Sounds like someone is trying to convince themselves it was a wise investment.
Its simple you buy the game or you dont buy the game. No point on trying to change people opinion when they are already 100 % sure they are right. For intellectuals discussions are for getting wiser, but when I look at these forums it looks like they become more stupid. I honestly start to wonder why I even post on these forums anymore. Seem more like people come here to argue or release steam because they got so much anger issues or lack of money.
Nothing anyone is saying on these forums is going to change anyone with a brains mind. Trying the game for yourself will. Which is why I am buying it tomorrow.
And half of the people posting about a game seen like 2 screenshots from it and 1 video and thing they know everything, and 70 % of what they are saying is pure speculations.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

By all means buy the game if that is what you want to do. But do not come to the boards and try to tell people you bought it due to some noble cause and expect people to fawn over you and tell you what a humane individual you are for doing so.
I for one pre-ordered this game and I am proud of it. The reason I payed the money up front is because this "idea" of a game is such a big deal to me, that the chance they pull it off will be worth it in the end. Also, the $75 wasn't a lot to ME personally. And MY personal feelings towards "investment" is that I'm putting money up front for a passionate company to deliver skill-based, full loot MMORPG with housing and other content that is based on Ultima Online.
The developers commonly state that their path is based off of using elements of UO that worked. Will it work out? Will it be like UO? Will it be better? It doesn't matter. I've already paid for the chance, and I can live with that either way.
That's my story at least.

Right,
People pay for things that they believe in, as a sign of faith to say "hey i believe in this game so much, that ill pay for it for whatever reason". those on the opposite end speak of such faith as blind sheep decisions.
why justify such choices to people that already made up their mind to think they are fools in believing in something?
this statement comes in:
faith does not exist in the mmo world, screenshot or it didnt happen.
MO is not art it's a product. Their sole purpose is to make money like any other business. They've already made money with a product that's still unseen. People tossing them money now are either bored and wanting something new and willing to pay for it or they're extremely gullible and don't realize the chances of this game being a truckload of fail is greater than it being a hit just because of trends in this genre.

There we go again speculating til you fall asleep. Not good trollman
Not trolling just telling the truth. Mainstream games with big money thrown at it also have a higher chance a failure than suceeding. Now you're getting into unkown developer land useing a indie budget to create a game people truely know very little about at this point. It could be a hit but common sense should tell you after looking at all the games in this genre that the chances of it bombing are much higher that it would being a suprise hit.
I just bought the game, and it says I can start the beta testing 31 aug. I am really hyped, even tho its a beta test with a preorder I dont really care. If the game is only 50 % of what I think its going to be I will be happy I got in Beta Block D.
I already had a Block A box reserved which I hadnt paid for until yesterday, after some discussion with my guild mates that have bought it, I decided I would just go for it and bought the Block A box and... .
Edit: edited some bits cause im not sure what really MMORPG moderators will see as NDA violation.

Hm, that implies that the 10.000 copies they were going to sell has not been sold yet as Block E is the last 2000 spots. So only 8000 pre-purchases sold. Not too bad I guess, considering the high price for a pre-purchase. And I think Darkfall made more people sceptic about indie companies releasing MMOS.

Im sure he must have reserved it before, because a friend of mine that didnt have it "reserved" went to buy from scratch and he is in Block E.

I am also stuck with a box version for block B because I couldn't take it out of the basket after I was just medling around with the market. I have already bought a Digital download version but now the wait for Block C is getting unbearable. I`m seriously thinking of finalizing my order for the Boxed Version and use it to login to Block B...

I was on the fence for a while but then, like you say, I realized that once in a while you should stand up for things you really care for.
Hear hear. And come on people, are 75$ such a sinkhole for your budget? I bet you spend more on a night out! I know I just did last night/morning. For 75$ you can enjoy getting familiarized with the game, explore the world, meeting up people, guild recruiting, having the chance to come up with good ideas to enhance game experience, report bugs, so on the long run we all can be surprised by a smooth game being launched. Sure there will be bugs, even now after what... 6 years? Blizzard still fixes WoW bugs. As a QA Engineer, I know you can NEVER eliminate ALL the bugs, its a fact, no matter how much you invest in manpower and resources.
I see my investment as a vote of confidence. I put in balance what do I have to lose versus what could I gain. Flamers and mockers never quite got to this, I guess...
OP: +1.
$75 is more than most basement dwellers make in a week, and since most trolls are basement dwellers...

If one chooses to buy 3 single player games or two mmo's for $75 instead of risking it on what is at best a crap shoot doesnt mean he or she lives in a basement or makes them a troll. And spending $75 on any video game doesnt make you a partron of the arts.

I buy a game.
