New York City Shipping Homeless out of the City

outfctrloutfctrl Member UncommonPosts: 3,619

This is classic.

New York City is buying one-way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city.

It's part of a Bloomberg administration program to keep the homeless out of the expensive shelter system, which costs $36,000 a year per family. More than 550 families have left the city since 2007.

Cant really blame them.

It's impossible to form valid opionions or similar on an article that's a summary of a summary of a summary.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

California is doing the same thing.  A few months ago there was a lot of reporting on homeless being rounded up and moved to holding centers in remote locations.  We're one step away from homelessness being illegal.

Cities have been doing this for YEARS. This is news to you?

Hospitals do the same with patients who can't pay. They simply call a cab, load them in and give them a fake address the cabbie drives to. They then let the recently surgeried person out of the cab and onto the street. Hospitals did this because the homeless got immediate care, but because they couldn't pay the room rates (or no insurance) they kicked them out. Another reason for healthcare in America for everyone is a good idea.

Cities do it because it "an eyesore" to the "regular citizens" who pay taxes and complain. But I'm glad you finally found out about this serious situation after all these years, outfctrl.

At least you now see what's been happening for years in America and for that, you deserve a /clap for making progress.

Also strange that a "vet" like you would start a thread like this and then say it's about time to get rid of the homeless when veterans make up 1 in 4 homeless.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11% of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.

The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 1,500 homeless veterans from the current wars and says 400 of them have participated in its programs specifically targeting homelessness.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness, a public education non-profit, based the findings of its report on numbers from Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau. 2005 data estimated that 194,254 homeless people out of 744,313 on any given night were veterans.

In comparison, the VA says that 20 years ago, the estimated number of veterans who were homeless on any given night was 250,000.
